Crank Seal Knackered !
« on: 02 May 2015, 16:14:38 »

Ah yes , since doing my best to get this car serviced and changed the oil twice its sprung a leak from the front crank seal  >:( I thought it was the oil pressure switch which i did replace but after i cleaned all around i notice its dribbling from the front crank seal  ::)
Rocker gaskets an wells bone dry . Was planning the cam belt change so lucky this is spotted now  :( Im guessing the crank seal is not a big job if the cam belts being done anyway ??  :-\

Make sure that the engine doesn't turn backwards (anticlockwise) while you are undoing the bolt or you run the risk of the cambelt tensioner getting compressed and the belt skipping some teeth.

Best idea is to make something to lock the crank in its position :y

 :y

Is this a common fault ? I seem to be recalling a few on here seeing oil accumulation below the pulley assuming its cam cover leakage . Cant see a guide for it either  :-\

I don't think that will be man enough Al, will it?

Especially given the bolt needs undoing, and the crank lock is designed to hold a clockwise rotation. Turn it anti clockwise and its pulling against the little adjuster clamp thingy on the side that's done up with a thumb wheel.
Could fit the crank lock to the right of the water pump, but I'm buggered if I'd be putting a couple of hundred nm through my crank lock. Tbh.

I've seen contraptions made with a bolt patten the same as the pulley bolts, then a long Handel bolted to that to keep the crank still with a breaker bar on the nut. Looked like at least a two foot Handel. With stories of busted key ways. Iirc?

I tried to replace crank seal after replacing cam seals although none of seals was leaking. Needless to say I couldn't remove bolts even with an air gun so I left it

I am guessing that you are joking? (because nobody would be silly enough to assume you were serious :-\ )

Having read about how people have destroyed the pulley by holding it while trying (unsuccessfully) to undo the bolt I think the easiest way is to grind the head off the old bolt and fit a new one after.

The way I have held the crank still in the past is to make something to engage with the teeth on the starter ring gear - easy with the engine out but tricky with it bolted to the gearbox
