Title: Car for the wife
Post by: The Sheriff on 29 June 2015, 13:28:22
Wifey has had her megane for four years now and done over 40000 miles in it. During her long summer holidays it will need a service, brakes all round and four new tyres. It has never let her down but........I am wondering whether, rather than spending the best part of a grand on it, I would be better chopping it in for a newer car.
I have no problems with her keeping it. Despite the derogatory comments about French cars, it has been very reliable (20000 service intervals too). But it may be getting to the stage where it will want money spending on it. The car buying service have quoted £4200 for it online, I doubt I would get that, but even £3700 would be good. If I leave it another year I might get SFA.
Another (small to me, big to her) problem is that it has all the toys. Tom Tom sat nav, auto lights and washers, keyless entry etc., and she would want the same, making the choice a bit limited.

Also, her commute involves lots of high speed stretches and roundabouts, complete with 'nutters in a hurry'. So it would have to get away from the roundabouts quickly, unlike my weakling of an astra.

4 years old and 40k and you're baulking at throwing a few consumables at it?

I'd be getting a bit more value out of it before chopping it in, myself. :y

Agreed. It's in the prime of it's life.......unlike yourself. ;)

I would say that the parts you listed come in at closer to £500 than £1000.

May I suggest that you shorten the service intervals from 20k to at most 10k, especially oil changes? The 20k figure is not realistic and only there to impress fleet managers, who expect to replace them after 2 years so it doesn't matter to them - but YOU want a longer lifetime from yours.....

Ron.

.. then again, if he's going to chop it in after only 4 years... ::)

I hear what you are all saying, and it makes perfect sense. :y

But....there is, of course, another side to it. Other people at work may give it a sideways glance and say it was about time the headteacher had a new car. Human nature, but we all have to adhere to it.

Also, her commute involves lots of high speed stretches and roundabouts, complete with 'nutters in a hurry'. So it would have to get away from the roundabouts quickly, unlike my weakling of an astra.

Do you really need two cars, Steve?

Surely you could take the bus. The money saved could be used to finance a more expensive car. A car suitable for a high-flying teacher. :)

I think it's either gonna be an astra or a focus, if I do decide to change it. A new(different) Renault seems to be impractical because they have fallen victim to the Eurocrats and have weedy engines in them now.

Drove a brand spankers Renault in 2013, I'd avoid another one at all costs. What a horrible place to be, plastics cheap and nasty. Felt like a disposable car, only good for a few years. Not built to last.

Trouble is it will need a good run every now and again to keep the DPF working, and not clogging up!
10k a year at 40mph will do you no good!

As a side issue, does anyone else recon that within the next couple of years those in charge are going to start hammering 'soot chuckers', for their alleged carcinogenic output?

It's already happening. Residents in Islington who have allocated car parking spaces  are being charged an extra £100 P/A by the council to park their derv drinker.

Allways found the best deal is to try and sell your own car for cash and then play 2 dealers against each other for a new car cash discount,  dealers make thier money on the part ex or finance, if they cant get you on either of those then you have the upper hand as they want to max thier sales numbers.

They allways under value on your part ex, so selling privately you could gain £1-2k extra.  Then by wanting a cash purchase you could save 5-7.5% on your new car.

Of those two buy the £11,995 one... it's cheaper and has done half the mileage...

That said, apart from mileage and number plate they are identical, both under powered and both wwd :-\ The Energy bit might simply be stop/start :-\

Looking at that engine bay, a 15 year old Omega would be cheaper to service... quicker and more comfortable too ::)

Going to stockpot tomorrow to look at the one you suggested. I think you are right about stop/start :y
Servicing is 20000 miles or two years and how hard can it be to change a couple of filters and the oil.

So you haven't bought her a nice v6 Omega yet because... ::)

I hear that Vamps chappie is looking to sell his one as Swmbo wants an estate... that said, once Miss Vamps hears that Mrs Stemo has a convertible, she might insist on a straight swap... :D

I bought swmbo a Megane convertible in 2012, she didn't like it, fortunately I was lucky enough to sell it privately for what I paid for it, we then went out and bought our current Omega for her. That's juts reminded me, had all the belts done, so not actually due till next year, still weaps oil and water................ :-\ :-\

Bah....what a waste of time. Had a conversation with wifey last night and it turns out she was only having a small diesel burner under duress. What she says she really wants is a petrol engined car with a little bit of poke and all the toys. You know, a bit like she already has.
Turns out I was trying to please her by getting her a newer car, and she was trying to please me by having something she didn't really want. Marriage, eh?
So, to those of you who said we should just get her car serviced and stop bloody messing about....well.....yes. :-[
We are certainly not going to buy a newer version of what she already has, because the megane is fine and we would be spending thousands just to change the middle two numbers on her registration plate.

Dear old Steve is quite elderly so it takes some considerable time for the blindingly obvious to sink in.

A dreary old budget derv drinker is not befitting of Lady STMO's elevated status as a senior headmistress. :y

French cars are like dogs, they age much faster  :y

Just use this chart: http://pets.webmd.com/dogs/how-to-calculate-your-dogs-age (http://pets.webmd.com/dogs/how-to-calculate-your-dogs-age)

Yes even over and above owning a French car in the first place ::) stick with the one you've got.

Megan and Scenic are shocking piles of shite at the best of times. Having driven both when the gear change linkage broke on a hired Megan, which was replaced with a Scenic. Utter rubbish, and that's before having to work on one.

Plus the unavoidable fact is, you paid almost 5 times as much for your shit box. Therefor, pished a large lump up the wall, then lost more on depreciation, and still more on servicing to upkeep a warranty. Then did the same again 3(?) times over on other cars. And not even good cars at that.

Yeah. Good work ::)

Has it wet itself on the drive, no......check
Has the power sounder burnt it to a cinder, no....check
Any rusty bits fallen off, no.....check

Here you go. Citroen Kacktus.

Thank you. Being stupid, I had no idea such a car existed. I thought people were driving round with a quilted anorak tied to their car.  ::)

The Airbump® is a successful combination of style and usability! The soft skin, which is a worldwide exclusive, protects your car against everyday bumps and dents.

So what's the secret? A multitude of air capsules under a soft TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) skin that does not require any special care.

So basically it's wrapped in bubblewrap? Which cretin came up with that masterstroke then?

Been standing 24 hours so battery not flat......check

Come on, how much spent on shite cars...?

A lot.

Steve is fortunate that he has  enough money not to worry about it. :y

I'd say he loses a lot by buying from dealers rather than privately.

But, as already said, he is not short of a bob or two. ;)

Clearly :y but then, why buy such crap? Makes no sense at all. But then, maybe it's a scouse thing. :-\

No......the scouse thing is called long term borrowing.....or stealing. :D ;D

....And I thought it was called a Greek rounding error, without the weather, ouzo or tourists obviously. ;D ;D

I think you are being very unfair to STMO as I've heard he has ordered a Citroen Cactus for the good lady wife.

Below is a picture of him taking it for a test drive:
