hi all
I had a thread running on this rear oil seal failure a while back but am now considering attempting to replace it myself .
The car ( '03 3.2 MV6 Auto ) is sorned & not in use so time factor for doing it does not matter.
What I would like to know is what exactly has to be removed & what can stay in situ to do this job?
The car is already on stands & well clear of the ground , enough for me to get under quite comfortably to work.
So my programme would be something like this :
1. cat back exhaust off
2. cats & sensor wiring off
3. exhaust heat sheilds off
4. drop prop shaft
5. remove starter,( is this neccesary ? ) but if so , battery is already disconnected
6. remove bell housing bolts
7. remove auto box mounting bolts
8. support engine & tilt so transmission tips downwards at rear
9. disconnect selector rod , wiring connectors to box & transmission fluid pipes from box
9a. support auto box on suitable trolly jack/s
10. remove TC flange plate bolts
11. wiggle box with TC & engine apart
12. roll gearbox/ TC clear of car
13. now ready to investigate & replace rear crankshaft oil seal
Have I missed anything or is there anything listed that does not need to be removed to replace this oil seal please ?
Is the order of what I have suggested correct ?
I have tried searching the forum but cannot find a "how to" for this job , so presume there is not one :'( :'(
Any advice or help greatly appriciated TIA Al :y

Use new flywheel bolts, and get them before you start, just done mine on tmf but took engine out as that was the easier option for me.

thats hardcore option :y

don't need to do anything with starter motor leave where is :y
other then that you should be ok :)
-
Removing exhaust is a bit excessive... And as said starter can stay :y

Daft question, how do you know it's the crank seal that's gone, what's the telltale signs? Not saying you're wrong, just intrigued what the symptoms are for a duff C/S seal, vs elsewhere, as engines tend to be smothered in old oil. (well, ok, mine is :D)

Well DBG . . . had a thread running a couple of months or so back regarding this when it happened (sorry but can't link you to it :-[ :-[ :-[ )
But bottom line is that there is now engine oil inside the bell housing. Oil drips from the 2 torx bolts at the bottom of the bell housing . Around 6-7 drips overnight after car has been running . Removing both rubber bungs & putting a finger in there , finger comes out with engine oil on it . General thought on OOf is that engine oil can only get into the bell housing if the rear crank oil seal has failed ::)
May just sell the car cheap as it is . . . . looks a bit to much of a job for me to do & as car is sorned it is a problem to get it to Serek to do it :'( :'(

Thansk for the reply.
Well, I always say it, but worth doing the job. You'll have done a good days work :y If it makes you feel any better I'm doing a full engine and gearbox oil / filter change this weekend, up a shared 8ft access driveway thingamy. :)

Ok then Al . . . so will prop disconnect just from the gearbox end if exhaust & heatsheilds stay in place ?
Or put another way can the propshaft be disconnected from the gearbox with the cat back exhaust heatshields in place?
Last question . . how awkward is it drill out the manifold to cat studs in situ if they shear off ?

No word back yet on my mate's motor. It was parked up off the main road in the neighbouring town, but I drove past yesterday and it wasn't there, so may have been sold. Will try and get hold of him soon as I can :)
-
Oh, and Essex Big Al, you'll be pleased to hear that I too have two drips of oil from the two torq bolts at the bottom of the bell housing, too. :y
So if you do attempt this, will be very gratefully watching his thread, and you know there's someone else out there who feels your pain :)

Seems another has a similar issue and on the bay... 121777863678

A bit extreme to break a car for the sake of a £30 seal ........ it cost me £200 to have mine fitted for me.

£200 well spent, far easier than lugging a great lump of auto box about :y

Same prob with mine . . . but too long in the tooth to be rolling around under cars now. As I have the silver 3.2 elite I am looking at parting with it as it is.
Was hoping to get a guide to what I'd get for it from that one . . but seems it's a "breaking" ad :-\ :-\
Won't be breaking mine though

If the seller were to list it correctly "fast black omega" it would sell for a premium.

;D ;D ;D Indeed, black Omegas are faster than the more common silver cars :y

Amen! :y

I'd have liked to list it on here to break but haven't got 200 posts!
I agree as the bodywork is great and the interior almost pristine. If it was only the crankshaft seal I'd go for it but P0420 codes both sides, crankshaft leak, cambelt replacement due, short in the drivers seat burnt through the leather, aircon not working despite regular top ups, won't read the single cd so no sat nav. It was great car and I loved the handling and performance but with all the faults not saleable and at 22 mpg not sensible as a commuter for 10 miles each way!
Sad but time to move on.
-
Sorry to hear that and a real shame, but understand your reasoning and there is only a certain amount of cash that can be placed into a bottomless pit.
Sad to see another 1 get broken up :(
-
It is indeed very sad. I took the wheels off yesterday and it was quite upsetting to see it gathering dust in the hangar. At least it's dry so not rotting away. There was no interest to sell as a whole car so it's a Johnny Cash "One Piece at a Time" in reverse. The car was a lovely drive but just not economical, especially when it developed a front end knock which turned out to be the top strut mounts - that was the final nail in the coffin. Bodywork is great so hoping in time its bits will find good homes and make someone happy. Realised I need 250 posts to sell here not 200 so I'd best get typing ::)
-
A few more days at nattering and you may yet be able to get her flogged complete. Admittedly it may then get broken up for parts by the new owner. Either way, hope you find a good price for the sale of it, either complete or as bits Merlindriver :)
-
I might just keep the battery topped up so I can periodically escape the office, lock myself away and bask in the pleasures of the Bose sound system. ;D
