21-25 mpg apparently , thats not too bad considering the size of the car . Just waiting for some feedback from the seller about detailed service history .

His diesel was only doing around the 15mpg in town and 24 to 27 on a steady run

My old boss had one...nothing but problems why not a discovery ???

Bmw x5 :y

well tbh EMD if you are looking at either an old ML or an X5 you might as well buy a P38 all as unreliable but P38 parts are a little cheaper and can be fixed by most garages

Ive seen some nightmare tin worm on those mate , not for the faint hearted unless all the rot has been cut out and new welded in :) What P38 engine would you recommend , petrol/diesel ?

What P38 engine would you recommend , petrol/diesel ?
Petrol!!! The ol' 2.5 beemer engine is very agricultural in one of those, especially the auto, put ya foot down and...something happens ??? ::)

Did they only do a V8 petrol :-\
I see they are quite reasonably priced . Many have had the rear air bladders ripped out :)
What about this ?
P38 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1995-LAND-ROVER-RANGEROVER-4-0-SE-AUTO-GREEN-P38-/301802404414?hash=item4644d33a3e:g:DeUAAOSwZVhWTHur)

Be better off with a Shogun ;)

Be better off with a Shogun ;)
Only guessing but would the parts be more expensive on a Shogun :-\

Fixed that for you. Mitsubishi translates as HOW oppsing much???!!!!!!!
Shoguns tend to have fewer mechanical niggles than a Range Rover; but the catastrophic failures make up for that. They rust almost as badly, drive like a truck and have nasty interiors.

A good P38 is a nice vehicle,a bad one is truly terrible :-X

Yup, either 4.0 or the 4.6 v8
They have air bags on ALL corners and to be honest if you get a good un, i.e. the suspension works correctly and maintained they are 100 times better than the ones converted to springs. Changing the bags on them is a doddle to do if they ever start to sag anyway, so is replacing the pump and valve seals on the valve block. I know, I replaced bags / pump etc. on both P38's I owned.

I will keep a look out for a half decent one then . There's always a bargain to be had ... now where's that video of wheeler dealers P38 :)

it got to be the V8 and if it is gassed even better as for rot that's landrover for you but there are rot free/rot removed p38 to be had

no mine was a discovery and if I am being honest I wish I had kept him now as it was a good car :y

I would prefer a full 12 months mot as standard on that 4.0 , that would clinch the deal for me or more piece of mind that its got nothing serious hiding .
-
that's if the MOT man is looking and not just signing the bit of paper always check for rot yourself the thing is with a P38 some people swear by them and some swear at them, as henry said if you get a good one they are a great car and they drive pretty well..get a bad one and trust me it will be bad :o
you really do need a good code reader

MOT check finds the normal wear and tare items but i'd imagine a car of this vintage would of had all the major stuff sorted :-\

you would hope so but then bushes do fail and rust is the major downfall of any landrover

Engines pretty bulletproof though ? Not that i@d be working on it , serek's the master mechanic nowadays :)
-
well liners do slip and if it shows any sign of over heating walk away but check all the buttons work like air raise etc
-
Major things to look for with one of them are
1) make sure all electrics work, from windows, central locking, roof, alarm, all lights etc. if possible 2 working keys (expensive to replace) and the EKA. When the Air-con / heating is on make sure the little book symbol is NOT lit as this shows there are faults if it is.
2) Engine wise they are pretty bullet proof IF looked after properly, some - not all did suffer from porus blocks. Oil changes really should be every 5k. Look for any cylinder head leaks (mine went on the passenger bank at the back of the engine and I'm told its a favourite place for them to go, due to the coolant routing and poor coolant maintenance).
3) As said earlier Air-suspension - Best left on air-bags, the ride is 100% better. If it starts leaning to one side or sagging at the rear, the bags will be perished where they fold over on themselves. (NOT the end of the world, but a great bargaining tool for £££ off if you can DIY. The Arnott ones are the preferred replacement expensive, but have a lifetime warranty.

Thanks for that jason ;) Indeed quite a hefty bargaining tool £££'s off :y

I'll give you that... the P38 will be a much plusher place to spend the inevitable wait for recovery :y

If they're maintained well, they're just as reliable as the next car :y :y :y

better option than a shogun is the delica..with the right tyres it will follow any landy :y

Yep,slipped liner did for my v8 Disco, couldn't justify another motor on that age car seeing as all the second hand lumps are of a similar vintage and recon/new is big bucks
