Is it safe to pay a deposit for a car through bank transfer ? I mean putting a deposit down now but not picking up till 2 weeks time , dont know the seller from adam so a bit unsure :-\
-
What do you mean by safe? If the money is transferred to his account, it's his money. Just like handing him a wad of notes.

So i know i'd have online receipt but in reality im taking his word for it that he will keep the car and not deny payment when i come to pick it up :-\

You can prove you transferred the money, of course. Why are you worried? If you don't trust him, don't send it.

Not that i dont trust him but never been asked to do a bank transfer deposit , only reason he asks is that he had a few saying they will turn up and they never so covering his coste of re advertising .

A lot , been looking a while :) Thing is its not local its over 100 mile away but it looks worth it . If it wasnt described as it was do i have any option for my deposit back :-\

How much is the deposit?
If it's say around £50 and you want the car and you believe he's genuine enough then that sounds reasonable enough to me.. There's always some element of risk with a despoit depends if you think the car is worth the risk :-\
Have you seen the car/owner in person?

Cant see the car until i go to pick it up but ive asked all the relevant questions ect . £100 deposit .
-
Agree to the transfer as long as the seller sends you an e-mail stating said amount requested to be paid into bank account ********
as deposit for car reg. no. *******. Once in receipt of said e-mail, transfer the amount
-
what kind of dealer is it? Main dealer or Arfur Daily type? If a reputable car sales place I reckon you'd be OK
I put £500 deposit down on my Merc over the phone, but it was at a Mercedes dealership.

Good point there rob , cheers i'll go with that then . If he wants the sale he should agree to that surely , if genuine .

Use pay-pal. Then if not as described open a case :)
-
As above use paypal but dont send as a gift, use ebay purchase.
-
Ive asked for Paypal also :) I can check his address to see if it matches up with the displayed pictures from google maps ;D You cant be too sure eh ::)

A friend of mine recently put £200 down on a car without seeing it, had the RAC do an inspection and when it came back with lots of problems she cancelled the deal. Last I heard She was struggling to get her money back. ::)
That might not happen to you though, but I'd offer 99p just in case. :y

Guess you'd want a deposit if you were selling - always a level of risk paying any deposit, but if you want the goods its a no brainer. Can't see why you need to ask this question on a forum ???

^This^
Even if you add the fees onto the final bill.
That way, your covered under the PayPal protection umbrella.
If the seller has a problem, he is hiding something so tell him to opps off ;)
-
Can you not get someone whos local to him to check him out? Just to be safe
-
Paypal seems the best option , hope he has a paypal account . Yes i can see why he would want a deposit to secure the sale and avoid people that keep breaking promises and not turning up . Seems a genuine enough bloke to me and has replied to all my questions with knowledge ;)

For 99p certainly not. For anything north of thirty quid I would need to think about it. ::) ::) ::)

About a quarter of a century ago we hired a 1.8 litre fuel injected Belmont to drive to Scotland. I liked it despite the fact it handled like a puppy on waxed lino.
Quick and torquey it well well enough. Badged SXI and not SRI, if memory serves.

It may prove unreliable but at least Mr Emd won't need to worry about rust. :) ::) ::) :D
