Title: flood
Post by: Andy B on 26 December 2015, 17:50:24
My parents phoned me this morning. We're flooded she said, but we're OK .... no need to come round. We went anyway and within an hour, we were up to our knees in the living room.  :( :( :(

It could be worse I suppose ... this is a couple of miles away from me and a few miles up stream of my Mum & Dad's

The power of the water was unbelievable. It was flowing down my parent's street like a river ..... and you had to be carefull it didn't take your feet from beneath you as you crossed it ....especially with my Mum that doesn't walk that well anyway.

Sorry to see that Andy, it's frustrating when you have no control over it.   :'(  Do you have a couple of extra guests now then?
Hope it doesn't upset them too much.

The water level just carried on rising and as you say, all you could do was watch it.

Yes, we now have two dodery old guests in the spare room ..... so far they're quite stoical ie if they didn't laugh they'd cry.

Best bit is that they declined the flood risk part of their home insurance!  :'(

We got flooded out around here back in 2008 and i've been working at the Sainsbury's in Carlisle and Lancaster over the last couple of weeks.
Carlisle was 7 foot deep in the warehouse, and 4 1/2 foot deep at the back of the shop  :o :(
Lancaster got away with just a couple of foot  :(

Looking at the weather, it looks like i'll be back across there in the new year  :(

Sorry to hear that...  At least they're somewhere safe now.

Lack of insurance is a kick in the nads though :-\

They are indeed  :y I dare say it'll be longer term rather than short!  :o

Lack of insurance is a kick in the nads though :-\
and it was stubbornness that they don't ...... ''why should I pay £XXX when we've not been flooded in the 48yrs we've lived here?'' Hind sight etc etc .......

not sure about the kick in the nads ...... but my Dad shrieked when the water outside reached his nads as we took him to my car this afternoon!  :o ;D ;D

Such sad news Andy. Hope you manage to get them sorted.

They're both safe here for as long as they need ...... they were reluctant to leave to start with, but conceded to 'being rescued' as it went to knee deep.

Wakefield city centre roads closed now and the centre of Leeds isn't looking good.

Just to put a little perspective on it....150,000 people have been driven from their homes in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay......by floods :o

It looks like this is becoming almost normal.

Oh no, what a shock :o.

I'm delighted they are able to call on their son for refuge.

As no insurance, and mileage it getting stuff lifted out of the water to allow it to drain before the water stains too much? Or is it already too late? I know when bro's shop floods, we lift stuff up onto the counters, so only the bottom of the wooden counters, carpets and walls get damaged - the counters clean up OK, so just new carpets and a lick of paint...  ...though we normally catch it fairly quickly after it happens.

We moved what we could up stairs eg telly and some other electric stuff. But things like the fridge & freezer, furniture had to stay where they were   :'(

We going back down soon to see what we can do ..... the water had all drained away by 10 o'clock last night leaving a lovely sludge of unmentionable everywhere  ???

Glad your folks are safe. Loss of possessions can be heartbreaking, but at the end of the day, they can be replaced, but people cant.  :y
The bullsh*t hysteria from the media and politicians regarding the causes of the flooding make my blood boil.  >:(

People seem to think that, because we live in a modern, tech-savvy country, we can prevent things like this happening. You just can't tame Mother Nature, get used to it.

Still very bad for those affected, poor souls. I was amazed to hear today that people were actually visiting York to 'have a look' at the devastation. That's all they need.

 ......

Thanks. They've both landed on their feet  ;) ;)

As you say, it's heartbreaking seeing the thousand of pounds worth outside people's houses or in skips
