The old girl has failed her MOT big time. Both cills need welding. .. The rot can be seen even though the covers are still on. So, covers to be taken off and a phone call later to tell me the financial damage. :(
-
Wow, not usually seen one fail on cills :o
Any photos?

Sorry .. never thought to take piccies while I was under her ... but a finger went through the metal with some ease .. right at the back of the cill where the side skirt clips on.

what's a bus? ::) ::)
Its a free method of transport home .... easier than walking 6 miles .. :) man turns up at a stipulated time with this big blue & red thing, you get on and flash a little thing - bit like a credit card - at this weird box at the front, and the man says thank you and asks you to take a seat. For some reason, if its full, nice young people stand and offer you their seats...... When you reach your destination he stops, opens the doors for you, and allows you to disembark ... all very civilised and costs nothing ... :)

Can you hitch your caravan to these things? :-\ ;D

Cill covers hide a lot of rot unfortunately . Shouldn't be too costly to repair :)
-
Pity your not closer, could have fabricated a repair section and welded that in for you.

Depending if you wanted to go 'cut out and replace with new' or 'stick a patch over it' method, I was looking into sills myself not long ago, they seem reasonably easy to source.
EDIT: here! :)

Looking at that they only seem to offer pre- 99 panels ...mind you .. I have no idea if there is any difference between pre/post 99 cills !!

Significant differences to a northern bus then...

You seem to have missed out someone getting stabbed, and then waiting 4.5hours broken down in the middle of the road somewhere.

And sitting in a three-day-old macdonalds. And the 'loon'...there's always a loon.

Same :y
Found a couple of small holes on mine when I was sorting the car over the summer... Been patched and fingers crossed that should see it right for a couple of years.
Be worth changing the sills as they rust under the kick plates, along the bottom edge and behind the top edge of the cover... So rather than mess about, migut as well get it done once as the car is clearly a keeper ;)

How's this for a photo?
Mine failed due to rotten sills. The sill covers do a great job of hiding the rot.

Everything that's silver was a flaky, rusty mess... All the way along, both sides... Got a dust pan full of crusty crud from the two of them. Only two holes all in all, so not a moment too soon :-\
Silver paint was Dinitrol, over coated with satin black followed by a coat of stone chip protection.

My 2.2 is rusting badly underneath, I do wonder about the cills now. :-[

Just heard from the garage ... both "outer" cills have gone in various places along the whole length, all points coincide with the attachment points for the sideskirts .. (I wonder if its dissimilar metal corrosion at the screw points) .. they have not been able to source outer cills - I have given them the number on DBG's link - many thanks for that. If they can't obtain replacement cills they will fabricate something suitable ... total cost about £400 inc VAT to complete the job. Sounds reasonable to me so permission to go ahead granted. I "might" get the car back by the weekend !
-
Hmm. Sorry to hear this. Sounds like it might be worth all of us having the skirts off and rustproofing the mounting points... :(

It's probably a bit late for that if a well-cared for car like Nigel's is that bad.

Depends. IIRC, Nigel's has the Irmscher kit. Wondering if they were disturbed when that got fitted?
-
Irmscher kit was factory fitted, and to my knowledge has never been removed, so its had 15 years to corrode to its hearts content ... I certainly never thought to check behind the skirts

The sills on my Senator were 'a bit frilly' behind the plastic covers when I sold it ...... :-[

My white one didn't and was never plod damaged, no side damage to it ever fwiw, and it's pretty grotty in places...
Where the rubbers attach, where crud collects behind the arch liners and where the kick plates clip on are all as likely to have corrosion starting :'(

Was it fitted by Vx with self tappers through the outer cills? :(

Shouldn't have been, uses all the fittings of the original ones...
-
Irmscher kit was factory fitted
/Panto mode
Oh no it wasn't
/Panto off
The I-Line stuff was never a factory option, hence has to be fully declared for insurance purposes.

It is a brochure option, so if fitted from new, ie prior to delivery to the original customer, then to all intents and purposes, it's a factory fit item, regardless of which Gm employee fitted it :-\

I'll bow to your expertise .. but I'm sure the paperwork that came with the car said it was a "Special Order" or something similar .. perhaps it was dealer fitted ?? but it was certainly fitted "from new" ..
It is always declared as a "factory fitted option" for Insurance.. and they always accept it as such

It's dealer fit (so not fitted by GM employees, Mr Al).
As such, its not on the options list when selecting a new car, so an insurance company can invalidate insurance (if they looked hard enough - TBH, everything is instant write off now)
-
It's dealer fit
And thus aftermarket.

OK .. take the point .. just looked up the EPC and there is this statement at the top of the i-line page ,,,
"THE FOLLOWING LIST CONTAINS OPEL I LINE / VAUXHALL I LINE PRODUCTS. THE LIST IS INTENDED FOR AFTERSALES FITTING AND ALSO FOR SERVICE REPLACEMENT. ALL NUMBERS ARE PRECEEDED BY AN "I". FOR THE ORDERING PROCEDURE PLEASE NOTE THAT ORDER NUMBERS WITH SEVEN DIGITS THE "I" IS REPLACED WITH A 7. FOR ORDER NUMBERS WITH 3 OR 4 DIGITS THE "I" HAS TO BE DROPPED. THE ORDERING PROCEDURE IS CARRIED OUT BETWEEN THE OPEL / VAUXHALL RETAILER AND IRMSCHER INTERNATIONAL IN GERMANY. IT CAN ALSO BE CARRIED OUT BY THE RESPECTIVE IRMSCHER AGENT IN THE COUNTRIES."
It's also a tad interesting that my version of the EPC does not list any i-line stuff for the 3.2 at all ! all seems to stop at 3.0
-
So that's sorted that then :)
I declare mine for piece of mind. In reality, adds next to nothing to premium, as already had mods (such as LPG) that definitely needs to be declared. Hopefully, I'll never need the insurance, but nice to know its "right" IMHO :)
-
Well .. got the car back all done ... they couldn't obtain outer cills from any source, not even the one I gave them from the link, so they fabricated some themselves. All looks good from the outside, but I obviously cannot see under the skirts and have to take their word for it !! Always been trustworthy in the past so no real doubts from me.
Total cost of the welding work .. £400 inc the dreaded VAT, pretty happy with that TBH.
Two advisories ... 1) front discs pitted on outer edge ... yup .. 2 years old so need changing again .. what is the recommended heat proof paint to use to try and prevent this recurring problem ??
2) Exhaust corroded .. :) Slightly odd as its a Stainless system .. but he took me under and showed me ... the flanges and bolts where the SS sections join are obviously NOT SS !! They are on pretty poor condition, and I'm not sure how to fix them TBH ... I doubt they'll come off easily .. I might just wire brush them up and paint with de-ruster and see what I end up with .....
But I have a year to sort that .... :)

Does it actually cause a problem? If not, you need a software solution and not a hardware one: read the advisory and ignore it.

Looking at the Carz2 website they have sill sections for the Omega, only question is that they are shown as 94' on,I presume that there wouldn't be a variation from PFL into FL on that sort of item :-\ Prices are not to bad at around £25 a pop, and I have had wheel arch panels from them over the last couple of years and have had no complaints as to quality or service.....stick em your favorites box, sounds like there might be one or two of us that might have need of them. ::)
