Title: I'm in for a sweaty week
Post by: STEMO on 16 January 2016, 20:22:44
Wifey's new car came with the dreaded bottle of glue and no spare. Ordered one off eBay but won't be here for a week. The spare on her old car was still brand new after five years....but, if you haven't got a spare, then Sod will surely intervene.  :-\

What can possibly go wrong?  :D

A few years ago BMW sold a model without a spare because they said the average interval for a puncture was 93k miles.

Years since I had a puncture.

AA?

RAC......but if the goo doesn't work, it's off to the shop for a new tyre. A couple of hours at least, which will piss her off to say the least.
Plus...will RAC man leave her new car at the side of the road, or hoist it on to a truck? Neither will be stress free.

Oh......and if the goo does work....it's off to the shop for a new tyre.

It won't with a blowout.

I say bring back the spare wheel.......and the tax disc.

It won't with any sidewall damage but, then again, no one will repair a tyre now unless the hole is in the centre two thirds of the tread.

And....while I'm blowing off steam, the car has tyre pressure sensors and, if you put air in the tyres, it has to 'learn' the new pressures. Sheesh...

That just bears out what I think about new cars which will one day be someone's secondhand car.

I hired a Passat blue motion 2.0 . Lovely car but in ten years time? No thanks.

You just tell my car to remember the set tyre pressure ......  though mine is the cheaper tyre deflation warning system ie it uses the ABS to monitor comparative wheel speeds. The direct system uses temp/pressure sensors in each wheel that are £100+ each!  ???

Probably it doesn't actually have any pressure sensors at all .. but "calculates" the pressures from the number of rotations of the wheel to cover a specified distance. If that then changes (ie more rotations for the distance) then it "assumes" the tyre is deflated.

IMHO should not be described as TPMS in any way as a true TPMS measures temperature and pressure .. interesting enough .. all 4 wheels gave low pressure errors this morning ... all 2 psi below set threshold .. it was -2.5 C !!! Once the tyres warmed up a tad (+2 C) the pressures were above threshold and the warnings ceased. It was interesting (to me ) that the rear right wheel took the longest to warm up, yet again .. always that one, and I've swapped the sensors a couple of times so I don't think its the sensor... I just wonder why back right is the "slowest" to warm up .. it does eventually reach the same as the others.

puzzled of R Wooty B  :)

I'm not sure enough to comment, Nigel, but the book says it has sensors in the tyre valve. Unnecessary....in my opinion.

I expect you can replace the sensors with normal valves and get the system disabled if it bothers you.  ;)

Had another read this morning. Nigel was right and I was talking shite....again. It does it by measuring the speed of the wheel.

Just picked the spare up from argos, brand spanker, £112, happy.

Perhaps not so much an issue when you've got a new/ish car, but I've ended up by the roadside several times in the last 6 months changing wheels over, due to leaking rims. Obviously more of an issue caused by 20-ish yr old alloys, but nevertheless glad I had a full-size spare with me.  :)

My Omega came with a spare so no need to spend £112.

My Signum also has a spare......although some say it will only fit the rear. ???

It's annoying that a full size spare is considered to be an 'optional extra' these days. >:( :(

Excessively. I agree.

Thing is, when you walk into the showroom all the spangly pretty bits are what people see. They don't realise the air suspension will fail, there's no spare wheel, the boot apeture tapers and is useless, the lamp inits have to be removed with special tools just to change a bulb, that seal can't be changed, you have to take out the whole assembly and replace with a new one, the ride though great for that initial test drive is too harsh and crashy over time. I don't want to wander into 'old man' territory, but there's so many/too many things now which are aimed at less user-friendliness, or deliberate and snide attempts to make servicing/owner-mechanic repair harder.

Looked at some pics of a HC Viva today, and had forgot just how logically laid out everything was, the bootlid was literally as large as possible, allowing the maximum access, the dashboard was reversible for LH/RH drive models (6 years before the SD1 did it) stuff was simple and elegant.

I know the counter argument is 'ahh, Vivas rubbish build quality, I had one it broke down, smelled of cat poo etc etc..' I'm talking about fundamentals laid down at the design and engineering stage. Logical, simple, neat and maintainable solutions. Repair it, not 'undo it and throw it away and screw a new one in' philosophy.  :)

And so it looks like I'm not decrying all modern automobilia, look at Skoda, and some of the neat and logical solutions they install on their cars. It's really beautiful, the bootlight unclips to become a torch, hidden storage, umbrellas in the doors, clever bottleholders, all sorts of neat ideas. Clearly the ethos there is 'no-ones going to buy our cars on style and prestige, so let's make them buy because of simply how good/clever they are.'  :)

Depends on front disc size... That said, the rear is the only sensible place to put it given that all the steering, tractiin and braking happens at the front...

Spare wheel well will take a full size 16" wheel, and probably a 17"... Certainly the Vectra C will in any body shape ;)

When the lady put my number into the 'till' and said "I'll just pop round the back and get it", I did have a slight grin. But she coped admirably, hardly any veins sticking out of her forehead at all.  ;D

They don't sell cars either. But you could probably pick up a Renault ;D

The Merc came with a directional tyre as the spare , manual advises use on rear or front left wheel only !! Why I do not know, have had it changed for a matching Continental.,so can be used wherever.
