Town was quiet on Friday night, I wasn't woken this morning by hoards of helicopters flying over.
Has the dull sport had its day?
-
No. Or at least not in the UK at the moment. There is so much wrong with F1 that its difficult to know where to start, but in short, its slowly disappearing up its own arse.
Despite that though, the Brits have Hamilton who is an incredible racing driver. The best since Senna. He may win his fourth title this season, and whether he does or not, he will no doubt provide plenty of excitement during the season.
I still watch it just to watch him. If he wasn't there, I would probably have given up on it a few years ago.
Now if the sport was properly run, so we could see him and the others actually driving cars which depend almost entirely on their talent, rather than tedious technology, it could be the most exciting thing in the world, which is what it should be.
-
Used to watch it in the 80's-went a couple of times to Brands Hatch-the atmosphere in Brands was out of this world! Saw Mansell win his first GP and Prost his first championship. Entertainment around the clock-other races-fly byes-night time bands. Then went to Silverstone about 89/90-what a difference-no atmosphere-pubs empty-racing shite!very little entertainment-down hill from then.
-
I know they've got the hump over losing out on rights, but the Beeb aren't even mentioning it :o
-
What's F1? :-\ ;D
-
F1 at Brands was a sight to behold. I loved watching it there. Ive never liked Silverstone, but it is well suited to the mind bendingly fast modern F1 cars.
Apparently next season they are going to make the racing better for spectators by giving the cars MORE downforce !!
You couldn't make it up. ::)
-
Why does Button turn up? (putting aside the fact that he makes a shit load of money every time he trails around at the back)
I believe he has a thermos flask and picnic rug tucked down the side of his seat, in case he has the chance of a 15 minute break during the race.
-
Its just started to rain, just before the start, so there should be some excitement.
Here we go. Come on Lewis. :)
-
F1? no chance even when there's nowt else on!But today there's BSB showing live on Quest from Snetterton :y
-
Used to love the howl of the V engines, now they sound like a prolonged fart. Nearly as uninteresting as Formula E. :P
-
Lewis and max :y
Can't beat damp races to show talent.
-
I've never been interested in F1, im a rally guy ::) Always thought it was a bit dull, a bit like nascar just going round and round. But the pre 90s stuff is cool.
Standing in the wintery forest with a hot cup of chocolate, watching rally cars flying by now that is something ;)
The WRC stuff is nice but then u get the historic stuff like 2-stroke SAAB 96s, Triumphs (!), Lancias and Quattros :D
-
Dont watch it anymore, whilst there is a skill in driving one of those machines, its become far too High Tech and Tech Regulated now, with the Manufactures spending £100K trying to shave 0.0001 second off a laptime. :'(
Wouldn't surprise me if H&S said the cars have to Driver-less in 20 years time. ::)

I agree with you there. I was brought up on the Gulf London and RAC rally when it was maybe five days (no hotels) and covered all of Britain not just a few miles in Wales. My mate has had more than ten rally SAABs mostly two strokes. Epic cars.

Maybe I'm a completely boring git and everyone else is cool fun lovers..... but I love the f1. Been to silverstone practise Friday's for the last 4 years now. Still to this day it boggles my mind how fast they take corners.
Yeah there are some dull races with no jostling for position and it can seem like a procession. But most of the time it's fast cars and the races usually incident packed. Love it.
As for Hamilton. Again, I must just differ from the general public cos I can't stand the guy. Really beginning to like young max though :y

They frequently (ish) allow public in (for free :D) on F1 test days, so keep an eye on the website. Usually a schoolday, but usually worth a morning out. Sometimes access is limited to the main Luffield complex stands, sometimes more, seems to be luck of the draw.

Got a feeling there's a test day this month :-\
Ps en route to silverstone we were crawling in slow traffic..... alongside a nice pfl omega. Wondered if he was on his way to you? :y

Used to watch it religiously butI got board with F1 about 15 years ago they started messing around with the rule too much then and is only got worse lately. Once the first corner is done the race is over (bar mechanical failiure) it's a game of follow the leader. Haven't watch a full race now for a decade

And now at the first sight of moisture, they have to start behind safety cars in order to inject that extra boredom.

Nope:
a) he wouldn't have got through, as the A43 is 4 lanes of 1 way traffic
b) I wouldn't invite anyone on GP weekend, I've lived here long enough to know better

More chance of pulling yer foreskin up over yer head to keep yer ears warm then me regularly looking at F1 tosh... ;)

Aye billions sent on car development but they can't start or run a race if its a little damp more research need into tyre me thinks is needed.

If you've time to slow down for the corners then you ain't going fast enough....F1 not for me,....drag racing 300 mph on a fraction of an FI budget ...get in :y

You should watch a whole race then. Ok, perhaps not the front runners but there has been decent racing all the way to the finish line for the last few races ;)
That said, it's not as good as the old days :y

Even I watched the British GP, and unless I missed something, it was pretty dull. It was Ch4, but I always thought all the pictures were the official FIA feed, with local TV audio?
Every bit of overtaking was artificial (DRS), with the most exciting thing was Hamilton nearly overtaking the safety car.
-
To be fair, most of the drivers were less than happy about starting behind the safety car, but they had no choice.
It may not have been an all time classic in pure racing terms, but Hamilton gave a masterclass in wet weather driving.
He is on a different level to the others in terms of driving talent.
-
Mercedes played a blinder...they new they were braking the rules by giving rossberg instructions of the radio to tell him what to do about the problem with his car,,,,they knew if they got a 5 or even a 20 seconds penalty rossberg would still be third, thus winning points for himself and the main thing winning points for the constructors championship...because if they had stuck to the rules and not given that advice the car could have possibly been out of the points or even not finished at all thus gaining no points at all..crafty sods...In football that would have been classed as a proffessional foul..lol ;D ;D

That's where the option to watch where you want is an advantage ;)

Verstappen driving around the outside of Rosberg on the wet line was as good a move as Ive seen in any era of F1 racing.
He is going to be the one who gives Hamilton trouble in the near future imo.
