That's intended for driving screws using a 1/4"hex bit.
If you want it for mechanical jobs you want the 1/2" square drive impact wrench.

Though 3/8th have come on a bit too, and can be easier to get in places than 1/2"

These are great for all the 10mm bolts and torx screws.

Want something for wheel nuts and shock bolts, caliper brackets. All standard service DIY jobs, I like Makita, going from my drill, could splash on this?

Did Webby have this model? Top end heavy I think, but nice and powerful.

Question you need to ask, how many times will you use it, can I get something cheaper that does nearly as well, I have the sealey/machine mart one, cheap enough and does most things I've asked of it, Wolf do one that's about £70-80.

Mostly used for taking wheel nut bolts off, to save time/effort. I'm going to do shocks soon too, so not mega use, but do have two cars to run so fair use I'd say.

I'd want one that would do the job and not run out of puff on basic jobs.  :-\

This is the one I have tunster.......

http://www.powertoolworld.co.uk/makita-dtw450z-cordless-18v-impact-wrench-body-only?gclid=CM3q1-iC784CFcHNGwod5GkDsw

It gets a pasting every day and still is awesome. Will remove 99% of stuff I ask it to.

Personally wouldn't bother with the impact driver. I have the dewalt 3/8 impact for light work. If u also want it for screwdriver bits simply use a 3/8 to bit converter thingy.

No bolt is a match for the makita but it is quite big and getting it in to areas for shock bolts, carrier bolts etc is occasionally tricky.

Thanks mate  :y :y

Which batteries did you get?

Makita BL1830 18v LXT 3.0Ah Li-Ion Battery
£41.95

Recall you had an upgrade to 4.0Ah?  :-\

If I go for a single 4.0Ah, comes up at £224.49  :)

You have a good memory lol yes mate. 4.0 batteries x 2. I only got those cos the seller said he hadn't got the 3.0. So lucky really.

It's two years old now roughly. It's not even gone through brushes. Which are pennies to replace anyway.

Another alternative to throw in the mix is the Milwaukee. Boss has got that and it's even more powerful than mine. Not sure how much they are tho mate

And just for completeness here's the dewalt I have....

Really awesome for motoring through services, under trays, valve cover bolts, etc. All light stuff.

Ive never been impressed with battery life with DeWalt tools (as in dying, not recharging life) , so may have budget for some spares.

I think most "proper" impact wrenches stayed with NiCads due to high current requirements for ages.  The early Lithium ones were, and mostly still are, less able to deal with this application.

NiCads need a lot more love and care, as don't respond well to being left flat, or cold temps (like a garage over the winter).  Though have the bonus of easily supplying high current, and not busting into flames at 67C when charging/discharging.

Be aware of naming, and Impact Driver is a screwdriver, not anything you can use on a car.

My DeWalt impact wrench is claimed to be about 190Nm from memory, with a variable trigger (REALLY useful) and a small body (more versatile).

The Clarke (identical to Sealey and every other rebrand buying the same Chinese tat) claims 450Nm, on/off trigger, and large body.  Its shite. Utter shite. Need to loosen wheelbolts first, its big, heavy and cumbersome, easy to crossthread due to non variable trigger, and heading for the skip if little bro doesn't want it.

So the vote is the Makita one Webby linked to earlier? I'm very tempted to get that  :)

Must admit that I very nearly bought a Makita Impact Wrench last year to go with my other Makita stuff but decided that it wouldn't get enough use in my hands so I got a longer breaker bar instead. Downside with longer breaker bars for suspension work etc is the lack of room to swing them. Great for undoing wheel nuts though.  :y
I did notice that you have to be careful when reviewing prices as a lot are sold bare and decent batteries ain't cheap.
In saying that, I didn't think I'd use my Makita Impact Driver around the house but that thing is an absolute godsend.  :y

It is hard to justify, currently pricing up the one Webby has, £260 with battery + charger + body. I'm only a light DIY'er at the end of the day, I think these are just a toy really and make life a little easier. It's hard to justify their real value, as you can just use a breaker bar. I see it's main duties as:

Wheel nuts (saves faffing with breaker bar) - Time saver too. (also primary use, as wheels come off fair bit)
Shock Lower Bolts
Brake Caliper Mounts/Shocks for front disc changes
Diff Mount bolts, for lowering diff on spring changes

I'm thinking of the times I've cracked a nut with big bar, then it takes 10,000 goes on the wrench to free off said bolt completley. This would be a great time saver.

Absolutely.  :y  At times like that it would be really useful as it would minimise the anger when you realise that said nut is going to fight you right to the bitter end.   ::)

I say this every time, a good impact wrench is so expensive, you need to have in your hand all day. That isn't the case for DIY, where its main use is to save some effort on the large, long bolts that hold suspension together. A good quality cordless system becomes much more justifiable once you add extra tools: 18volt batteries are good for drills, light use angle-grinders, jigsaws etc. I haven't used a mains drill in years, even though we have several.

A long-handled, flex-head 1/2" ratchet gives most of those advantages and is a fraction of the price. Takes up no space in the car for efficient roadside wheel changes. Spend some of the saving on a similar 3/8" ratchet, and that will help jobs like caliper bolts, or repeatedly turning the crank through on cambelt replacements. If you're still feeling extravagant, a stubby 3/8" ratchet is good for lots of small short bolts like on a sump.

I bought my bare DeWalt impact driver (as it matched the rest of my stuff) as a gift to myself for being a good boy, thinking it wouldn't see that much use, but it certainly has earned its £70 or whatever it cost.

It probably gets as much use as the rest of the set I have.
