Title: Repair costs for the mighty Signum.
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 14 May 2017, 12:35:48
Front coil spring £34.00
Fitting (1 hour)  £40.00

VAT at 20%      £14.80

TOTAL              £88.80

Small independent garage. About what Al Gollum said.

Not sure what a Vauxhall dealer would charge.

Unless such a job is part of their "menu pricing"then an hour labour would come in at a couple of quid shy of £100 round here.

The labour is nearly three times as much.
The parts price will depend on how badly they're missing this month's target, but will be at least £100.

The VAT is still only 20%, so you're not getting stitched up there.  ;D

The good value there is the labour, just £40. Nice one  :y

The work was carried out in a pretty remote part of the rural England /Wales border.

Average yearly wage is probably £15000, if that. Fancy London dealer costs would not work here.

Aren't you supposed to replace springs in pairs? That's a good price though, did the spring fail in Wales - he'll of a long way to go with a broken one .....

Not spending much time in sunny Lincs? Have we offended you?

You should, but it doubles the cost. So lots of customers won't pay for it as it's too expensive.

That is the wisdom on the forum. When the other one goes in the next few months we will get an accurate price for the job back in the real world.

Incidentally the charge would have been very similar here. Breakdown as follows

Front coil spring £68.00
Fitting (1 hour)  £20.00

VAT at 21%      £00.00 ( we only pay VAT if we choose to but if you don't , you don't get a receipt

TOTAL              £88.80

Pretty rare when compared to the 'common as muck' Vectra.

Very few 2.8T made, or survive. :y

Wages are lower here plus so are business rates. The place will have been family owned forever. I think they make the money on overcharging for the parts. Having said that, motor factors deliver the parts same day , sometimes huge distances compared to uk. Our local opel dealer and suzuki dealer is just a man and his son. That is quite normal outside the big cities.

That's  not bad to me .....
Merc wanted  a tad over £400 each side for the  'air springs' on my R Class. I paid an Independent about £360 all in  to fit a pattern (Arnott) air spring ......

You should do them as a pair, it can be dangerous not to.  If I'm asked to replace one side only I refuse, take the job somewhere else.

Upon replacing (all) the springs on the old girl a couple of years back I noted that the rear springs was of a different makes (and one was also 'lower/softer', so she was sitting low at one corner, by maybe 10mm (and both rear springs were clearly so tired the ride height actually went up when I put on the MV6 springs, but that's another story  :))
