The air con on my Elite doesn't work,it never has in my ownership-coming up 6yrs now-so can I just set to and remove all the gubbins and sling it or would I have to get it vacced down or whatever it is that's done to empty it?I know if I removed it all I'd need a shorter[non air con]auxiliary belt.
-
Not sure about removing the whole gubbins. :-\
But if it's never worked in 6 years it's probably empty. Though get somewhere who had the machine to recover anything that's in the system. Just in case there's something in there. Though I doubt it :y

I don't understand the concept of giving up with A/C without knowing whats wrong...
-
If getting rid of the system youll lower your asking price if you choose to pass it on
Disconnect the whole lot but leave the compressor in place (with bolt connector still on and fold over the pipes to stop dirt ingress.
or work out the correct size serpentine belt and remove the compressor
-
Air con to me either works or it doesn't.In this case it's the latter, but as a non-essential spending any money finding out why is a no-no.Likewise spending money to make sure the system is empty is also a no-no so in that case everything would stay in place, hence the question of whether I could just set to and bin all the under bonnet gubbins.

Got to agree with TB. I've just regassed the old girl. And having it is soooooo nice :y
-
Plus if it has a leak of some form it could be as simple as the HP valve.
But I get what you mean about not wanting to spend on it cos the system is complex and it could be simple to fix. Or expensive. Depending on the issue.

Depends why it's not working, but if it has any gas in it needs to be removed properly. You might find it's a cheap easy fix and the Omega climate system is appalling without working aircon. How do you keep the windows demisted?

HP Valve? Had mine regassed last summer, lasted six week. Had it regassed again, had lost over 50% in six weeks. Any ideas?

some national chains are doing recharges for 'no fee if not cooler' so you have nothing to lose. ATS and kwickfart spring to mind. kwickfart paid up when the failed miserably to properly recharge mine, F1 did it in the end and got it right.
-
You have a leak 👍
Did they put dye in the system? If so leaks should be fairly obvious with uv torch and yellow glasses (though not strictly needed).
Check the main suspects like consensor compressor ports receiver dryer etc
-
No harm in leaving it in place. Removal of entire system is more expensive than fixing what is either the condenser-£49 plus some labour, the valves-£10 plus ten minutes and a cuppa, or simply a regas £40?...
Three choices...
1. Spend £150 and have it working.
2. Leave everything in place and not worry about it.
3. Spend about £800 having the whole system removed... the evaporator is behind the dash.
1 or 2 are the only viable options, but consider that aircon is just as useful in the winter ;)
-
Exactly. Nothing much to be achieved by taking it out, and it costs less than the price of a tank of fuel to re-gas it. As said, the climate system has to run full chat without air con just to keep the windows clear in damp weather.

I wouldn't trust either of those mongrels to check the tyre pressures.
Unless the system has a catastrophic hole in it, a 15min hold test is going to find 3 parts of SFA, so you'll always get sufficient refrigerant in there for long enough to pass their guarantee, assuming the operator actually did the course.

with kwick fit i made the mistake of going out while it was refilling instead of watching, thinking i'd get back in time. when i came back they said all done but i need to check it was working. which i thought was a bit odd. also no printout of the amount injected. luckily i had my digital thermometer with me, air was same as ambient. straight up they said they would refund. 2 days later took it to f1 who filled it no problem and has been ice cold ever since, about 2 months so far...£45 I recall.
-
It would appear to be more of a pita to remove than I'd thought,so I'll just leave it be.Keeping the windows clear I achieve by my long standing habit of having a window open[just ever so slightly if raining]this also has the added benefit of extracting the fag smoke ;D

3 times now i've restored non functioning air con on a mig by just recharging it, why not try it? and if it is really knacked eg leak or pump gone, costs you nothing at ATS or kwick fit.. its not getting any cooler out there..

The leak has to be absolutely catastrophic for you to get away without paying ;)
Get any amount of refrigerant in there, and the Omega holds a shit load, and it will be cooler than before.
-
Mine doesn't seem as cool as it should be. It had a new condenser and regas last year. I must get it checked out. ::)

It does. The largest amount I've ever put in... 950g iirc

That's omega from empty, without oil.

Yep, 950g :y Says so on my Sticker ;D
It is a lot. The VW Touranimal I also have was only 550 ish to my surprise !

if its got a leak even a small one they won't put any in in the first place, or shouldn't. they are supposed to test it before refilling. which will cost you nothing if it fails at most if not all places, not just ATS and KF.

The air-con on the omega is a very good system when working, as it should, on low with all Windows up, it should drop to about 6.0'c,
Mine gives me a pain across forehead after good run, and wifey says " it's too cold".

550 is about average. The refill bottles for our machine are 13kg each and cost approx 50 squid. So that's roughly 20 customer regasses. And a bit of oil each time which is cheap.
We charge 30 squid inc. vat (which I believe is cheapest in town 8)) but next door to us charges 70 ???
Especially as there's no labour lol you switch the machine on, hook it up and walk away for 30 minutes and do something else.
-
Pity you ain't near me on the Wirral, as I would round for my 950g refill at that price :y :y.
I used an ATS just down the road from me. They looked after me when I had the Condenser changed, as they drained all old out, I then got new Condenser fitted (courtesy of Daz :y ) and then popped back for them to fill and pressurise and they only charged me for one go :y
It's been a couple of years, so I was going to treat the girl to a re-gas ( once I get Speedo etc working as A/C i believe is impacted by by my Speedo fault as on wiring diagram inspection that also has an input from the ABS ECU and same signal which goes to Speedo / Cruise / Radio / sunroof etc).
I can see some light at the end of my Speedo issue so fingers crossed :y

Well good luck with all of that mate :y
I wonder if an OOF recharge offer could be listed in the stickys for passing OOFers :-\

Too true. Mine needs regassing, too hot with no climate surrounded by black leather☀️

If people knew were you were and prices charged, and how to book in, am sure helpful admins would help with 're posting in relevant section.

They have no way of detecting anything more than a catastrophically big leak. So, the sort of leak that means it will all leak out within a few days won't be noticed by them on their hold test, and the refrigerant will stay in for long enough for it to be cold at point of test. Tomorrow, it might have lost enough not to be efficient.
;)

I should add, this is why it always pays to put the dye in (most do, some don't), as it makes these types of leaks (the huge, huge majority) easier to locate.
