Title: MOT query.
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 08 May 2020, 13:04:11
How do you go about getting a new MOT on a car that has no tax or insurance, and is SORN?

Is it legal to drive it to the MOT test centre?

Requires insurance  :y

When did the Mot expire? If recently, last six weeks then it may have been extended. Easy enough to check online :y

Thanks, Al.

Last MOT was about 3 years ago.

Surely the insurance would be invalid without an MOT.

as well as insurance (which you can get a 1 day or short term policy)
book it in for an MOT and insist the MOT station do actually write it down
you can then drive to a pre booked MOT appointment legally

Worthy of consideration.

.......or I could just risk the drive without insurance. It's only a couple of miles. ::)

Insurance is the ONLY requirement to drive to/from a prebooked test :y

Would insurance pay out if there was an accident?.........I imagine no MOT would give them plenty of reason not to pay..... ::) ::) ::)

Just buy insurance  ;)
it only takes a couple of metres to have an accident not miles  ,especially in a car that's not been used for 3 years

or, ask the MOT station or garage to collect it ,if it is that close ,probably wouldn't cost much

1 day insurance with breakdown is about 30 quid , recovery to a garage about the same  :)

There is no requirement to have an MOT to be insured, I have NEVER seen such a stipulation in insurance documentation - it would leave the Insurers open to all sorts of payouts they would rather not do ....  however, the vehicle must be kept in "roadworthy" condition ...  it could reasonbly be argued that as you are driving to a pre-booked MOT that you believe the vehicle is in roadworthy condition .. after all no-one drives to an MOT to deliberately fail .. do they .. :)

If insurance companies won't pay out (which they won't) without an MOT, then why is insurance necessary?

They will. They must - it's the law. If YOU have insurance then they MUST pay out (to a third party).

However, if it is then deemed you have somehow breached the terms of the insurance, then they will come after YOU to recover the monies they paid out to the third party.

You'll need insurance to drive the Signum to the scrappy as well.  :y

As the pre-booked appointment wheeze doesn't work for the scrappy, you'll need to tax it.  So you might as well get them to pick it up.  :)

Forget insurance payouts.... if you have insurance, and you're on your way to a pre booked MOT and get stopped without Tax or MOT - you have a valid exemption to the tax and test, and will be let on your way.

Have no insurance, and you'll be walking away with at LEAST a £200 fine, and 6 points. I say walking, because your car will almost certainly be seized under S165 too (google it).

Re my Astra - it was £30 odd for a months cover. Total no brainer to be totally road legal, especially in a car you haven't built trust in yet :y :y

That hurts. That really hurts. Future classics like the mighty Signum must be kept well away from the crusher at all costs. :)
