How do you go about getting a new MOT on a car that has no tax or insurance, and is SORN?

Is it legal to drive it to the MOT test centre?

Last MOT was about 3 years ago.

Surely the insurance would be invalid without an MOT.

as well as insurance (which you can get a 1 day or short term policy)
 book it in for an MOT and insist the MOT station do actually write it down
you can then drive to a pre booked MOT appointment legally

Would insurance pay out if there was an accident?.........I imagine no MOT would give them plenty of reason not to pay.....

Just buy insurance 
it only takes a couple of metres to have an accident not miles  ,especially in a car that's not been used for 3 years

or, ask the MOT station or garage to collect it ,if it is that close ,probably wouldn't cost much

1 day insurance with breakdown is about 30 quid , recovery to a garage about the same

There is no requirement to have an MOT to be insured, I have NEVER seen such a stipulation in insurance documentation - it would leave the Insurers open to all sorts of payouts they would rather not do ....  however, the vehicle must be kept in "roadworthy" condition ...  it could reasonbly be argued that as you are driving to a pre-booked MOT that you believe the vehicle is in roadworthy condition .. after all no-one drives to an MOT to deliberately fail .. do they ..

They will. They must - it's the law. If YOU have insurance then they MUST pay out (to a third party).

However, if it is then deemed you have somehow breached the terms of the insurance, then they will come after YOU to recover the monies they paid out to the third party.
