Reportedly Boris is set to bring forward the date from which the sale of new cars with an internal combustion engine are banned to 2030. ::)
That's not long and what will they do about the second hand car market as I can see people hanging on to their ICE cars rather than switching to an EV. Punitive taxes? ::)
On the other hand EV technology has come along in leap and bounds in the last decade, so who knows what EV's will be like in 10 years time, but what about the infrastructure? ???
Coincidentally (or maybe not) shares of Chinese EV manufactures rocketed last week, so maybe that's what they have planned for us and we'll all be trundling round in little Chinese electric shitboxes! :-\ ;D
-
Hybrids have an internal combustion engine, they're not banned in 2030. Get a newish diesel in 2029 and it will do you till 2040. I reckon there'll be enough of them around to keep fuel stations open.
-
I'm really looking forward to getting one 😅
-
Plus.....a lot can happen between now and then. Like, for instance, the government realising that the 30% of people who don't have offstreet parking will be 'A bit of how's yer father'ed unless they (the government) spend billions on infrastructure. I'm definitely not too worried.
-
Seems a crafty way of getting people off the road, as many cannot afford to buy a brand new car. There are not enough used EV,s/Hybrids around to satisfy the market either. Can't really see me driving much after 2030 anyway as i will be 85. :D. But you never know. :-\
-
we don't have the infrastructure to cope at a local level
much of the DNO's cable in the streets is 50+ years old and overloaded
when rolling out the smart meters they are downgrading many cut outs(the DNO's HRC main fuse where the electric enters homes) from 100 Amp to 60 or 80 Amps
Smart meters where rolled out so national grid could understand demand better , by 2020 the plan was for every household to have smart meters ,that didn't happen
A massive infrastructure upgrade costing billions to dig up and replace everything will see gridlock and most people unable to use cars anyway
the green credentials don't stack up, solar on every house to charge the cars batteries to supplement power generation and reduce load on DNO's local cable in the street requires raping the planet for raw materials and massive amounts of energy to process it , all done by our friends in China ,who have just given the world a right good f***ing which Chinese Virus ::)
BUT
who's going to listen to anything Boris has to say now anyway :-\
his days are numbered :D

They're saying new cars will have to be at least partially electric. As most new model ranges already include hybrids, this is a storm in a teacup.
While the number of pure electric vehicles will increase, hybrids will still need to be fuelled so existing infrastructure can cater for them and older ICE/hybrid vehicles. Unlike a filling station, public charging points can be installed anywhere there is power which is already happening - expect to see them appearing in all sorts of locations. The operators of filling stations would love to switch to cheap to install and run chargers rather than the massively expensive tanks, pumps and other equipment they currently need.
The country's future generation and supply requirements are already a problem without a large increase in EVs.
Reducing our dependence on individually owned vehicles is the only practical way of reducing their emissions, but this is such an unpalatable truth that any politician who mentions it will immediately kill their career.
As for the availability of older vehicles, look around you: they've become so expensive to maintain and repair that many today's twenty year old cars are one bill away from being scrapped. Manufacturers have long implied that they design for a seven year working life!
-
So plenty of perfectly useable ICE powered cars around until 2045 - 2050.
Ive never bought a new car and doubt I want to in 2030 when I will be 71.

If all cars do become electric, and therefore become an appliance like a washing machine, I will look forward to when all cars become self-driving. :-\
Yes.....I know we have to save the planet but can't that be achieved by sticking a cork up the arse of all the cows. ::) ::)*
* The same applies to northern whippet owners. :)
-
We can walk into town in 15 minutes + we will be 76 & 77 years of age by then so my petrolhead days would surely have gone by then ! Bothered not..😄

Our little island contributes something like 1% of global emissions, so it's no more than gesture politics.

You might be able to now. Just wait til the old knees go, then it gets a fickin sight harder. :( I'm, fortunately ok at the moment but SWMBO's legs have deteriorated over the last few years due to various mobility issues. :'( Stay fit. :y

So we won't be saving any polar bears.

.
Had my knees sorted in 2002 , the consultant said that they were in a real mess & I could have ended up in a wheelchair, both replaced & never looked back. Make an effort to walk at least an hour every day & used to swim most days before the lockdown. My missus is just as fit as me if not fitter, my old man is nearly 90 & still going strong mother died last year she was 92.👍

hate to tell you this, but cars became appliances(and not richmen's toys) when they became affordable, usable, practical and reliable. That was in 1908 with the Model T Ford.
The vast majority of car owners would prefer them to be appliances in the manner of washing machines because then they wouldn't have to maintain them, clean them, or spend any money on them from one year to the next. When was the last time you heard anybody wittering on about how their Acme Aardvark ABC123 Washmatic GTi makes a lovely noise or is such a stylishly sleek looking machine in its custom Glacier Ultra Diamond White finish?

I'm still on the originals at the moment. ;D They are now over 75 so will have to see how they go. :D

I wonder what the odds are for Wee Krankie announcing in the near future that new ICE cars will be banned in Scotland from 2029? ::) ;D

Even in 2020 cars can have a soul so long as they have an engine that runs on petrol and makes a good noise. Obviously any car that runs on dumper truck fuel is merely 'an appliance' designed to get be a man from A to B. :)

It's all part of the World Economic Forum masterplan...
Unless Farage is the next PM, it will be whomever can tell us what to do in a reasonable voice.
Way I see it, the lockdowns are being used to beat small businesses into submission and unemployed people in debt are alot easier to control than people with hope :-X

No, it's not a 'thing', it's a load of windbags spouting off. And if we're all gonna be dead anyway, not really much point on wasting your time even thinking about it.

Here it is! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omAk1gMyw7E) :y
The future looks and sounds lovely! :) You will own nothing and you vill be happy!
Probably because the Covid vaccine you had also erased your memories of car and property ownership etc, so that you will be satisfied with the New Normal :o ::) ;D
Any way that's enough seditious stuff from me as the Labour Party want to criminalise anti-vax talk, and are saying we need a new law to force social media companies to censor such views! ::)

For those who think that electric vehicles will be cheap to run, I read this morning that Rishi is already working out how to make up the £40 billion the treasury will lose in fuel tax. A national road pricing scheme looks favourite. More infrastructure, more outlay.
Of course, if you still run a diesel/petrol, I can't see you being exempt from that, so double whammy.
Perhaps......maybe.....one day ::)
-
When the first nuclear power station was being built, the Govt. said the electricity would be so cheap to produce it wouldnt be worth the cost of sending out bills. Look how that worked out.
Motoring wont ever be cheap because the state cant afford to allow it to be cheap.

This has already been looked into before, wasted millions on research into it then it got abandoned, still it will give some civil servants something to do while their pensions are building up nicely + their will undoubtedly be ways to evade the charges so will get the unscrupulous amongst us thinking.
-
Imo it has to happen. The amount of money the treasury will lose on the duty from petrol / derv will be colossal.

My daily driven 28 year car is fine. Parts are plentiful and reasonably cheap. Some cars stand the test of time.
-
They should have thought about the revenue loss before they subsidised the arse out of hybrids/golf carts.
Put 10p a litre on fuel duty and make anything that produces less than 200 emissions pay £300 a year on roadtax.
But pay per mile? Yous can opps right off >:(

The government has to pay for the lame and lazy and their own utterly inefficient civil service.
That in itself means the books can never be balanced, even with our current taxation.
And those brain deads who keep banging on about taxing the rich? Wake up, their arent enough rich people.
As always, the answer is a population reduction. And the chinese infection isn't doing a good enough job.

Does anyone actually realise how short a time ten years is to get all of this crap in place? The consultations alone will take about two years. I wouldn't hold my breath.
Anyhow, no one will need to drive a car, HS2 will get you up and down the country in a jiffy.

Only once you've driven 80 miles to London or Birmingham.
Thats another £5000 for *every* worker, including those on low incomes, to pay for that, and £2k pa for every worker to run it. For Phase 1 only (Phase 2 will never go ahead I was told by HS2 Ltd a few years ago). All at a time that even those in charge can see its no longer needed - not that it was in the first place.

You think Boris cares about that? ??? It's a nice bit of virtue signalling to keep his bird happy so he keeps getting his morning BJ! :y
Anyway by 2030 he'll be gone and some other sucker will be in charge of implementing it or making excuses why it's not possible, and it'll probably be a sucker who wore a red rosette in the 2029 election! ;D

More crap released today about our soon-to-be green and pleasant land, including details of magic pumps that generate heat from air and mini nuclear plants that power cities. Boris has really lost the plot if he thinks this can be done
at all any time within the next century.
Also, from the beeb's financial reporter, the warning that 'all of us' will be paying for this. No shit, Sherlock....
-
Air source heat pumps ? new builds have to have them rather than a gas boiler soon
nothing new ,but they do use electricity ,which is more expensive than gas ::) ,also more strain on the national grid :(

I've been reading about this green future quite a bit today. Just on the subject of charging points for cars, I don't think they are grasping the enormity of it at all. I've been searching google to try to find the percentage of emissions put out by trucks and planes, but can't find an exact answer. Oh, diesel trains too, farm equipment....etc.
-
What about the folk who just can't afford a new, electric car? Quite a few people get through by buying cheap, second hand motors, they won't suddenly be able to afford £25000 for a milk float.

Like you said earlier in this thread Steve ,it's going to take years to roll this out , we are nowhere near out of one crisis & the "educated idiots" are planning more nonsense they really are bonkers..

I really had high hopes for Boris, but it strikes me he has become completely dismissive of constructive criticism and is losing touch with reality, just like a certain ex US president.
-
I'm worried about what it is he's trying to distract us from. There was just no need for this rush to 'greenness', especially when the UK emits such a tiny fraction of the world's greenhouse gases.
-
We can only hope that as the date gets ever closer and those in charge, (at the time), will realise that it's not achievable and postpone it. For ever. ;D

In 2030 it'll probably be a Labour government and he's laying a huge trap for them, as they can't oppose the Green Industrial Revolution, but they'll have to implement it after winning the 2029 election. ;)
Either that, Nigel Farage the President of England will cancel it all! ;D

I don't know, Tigger. This notion of wokeness, greenness, racial equality, gender equality...do these things actually exist in the majority of the population? I don't believe half of the Westminster bubble buys into it. It is drummed into everyone from the telly and the press every day, and folk are scared to challenge it, but the people I know couldn't give a toss.

Not at the moment Uncle STEMO, but it's spreading as more and more people are brainwashed by the drip drip drip of propaganda! ::)
I have 'woke' friends who get proper angry with me when I say the climate crisis is bullshit! Thing is, I'm not even a climate denier, I just don't believe this Greta Thunberg crap that we'll all be dead in 10 years. ::)

Well I'm not afraid to speak my mind on the subject but, of course, I'd just be dismissed as a stupid old dinosaur, out of touch with the 'modern' world.

there will be a fair bit of pollution......
generating the electric to run air source heat pumps ,
retro fitting them ,
scrapping boilers,
manufacturing the heat pumps,
shipping them from Chinese Virus land ,
replacing all the national grid to cope with the electric cars, heat pumps etc

The trouble is, how can you challenge it?
The media won't report it, certainly not in anything vaguely identifiable as balanced.
Taking to social media will only be dismissed as right wing extremism.
Even taking the lead from Guido would leave us with the Civil Service running the shit show...
Clearly the whole world has gone insane :'(

He’s not giving up, but that's not looking good, especially when the woke cants start threatening families and friends of anyone who dares to question the greater good (a fine oxymoron if ever there was).
But it's all good, Jezza has self appointed himself as the resurrected one, although someone should tell him that Easter is a ways off ::)
