Title: I'm going to take a punt on this.
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 27 December 2020, 13:26:36
I bought one of these brand new in 1990 (£4940 after negotiation) and always loved it. A thirty year old example would be just the ticket to 'fettle' during Lockdown. Not sure how much work it needs.

FJ1200 lumps are pretty bulletproof, so I'm hoping it is merely cosmetic.

Only 130 BHP, but only weighs 230 KG, so should be nippy enough to keep up with the traffic in 2021.

I've had a 2008 1300 for 10 years - very competent and reliable bike. Think they ended production this year unfortunately.

Well .....the original FJ1100 of 1984 started as a 'brain out ' sport bike with a 16 inch front wheel for super quick steering.

By the time the FJ12 came about in 1986 it was slightly more 'sport tourer' than 'sports bike'. More torque lower down the rev range.

Black and dark blue.  Lighter metallic blue pinstripe on tank.  My mistake. It’s a 3cv, not cx.

According to MCN your model has 146 BHP. Probably weighs 250 KG though. Nice bike.

In biking terms its nothing to get excited about. 1 litre sports bikes these days tend to have as many or more BHP,s than KG,s.

It's ample for a  tourer.

Best sport bike's have around 220  BHP and weigh around 160KG.

It is indeed. A lovely big thing for long distances. Im a bit sceptical about some of the power / weight figures put out by manufacturers, but theres no doubting the bikes are absolute missiles.

Ooops...not grammatically sound.

Should read 'Black woman' as AP have changed the rules....... white woman must be written lower case as must white man. Black woman must use a capital 'B' as must Black man.

Email from the auction house....

The FJ1200 has been stood unused since 2016 when the owner died. It was apparently running prior to this point.

So the battery will be totally shagged. Is the motor likely to be seized solid?

I'd expect to do a full fuel system clean:

drain the tank and inspect the interior with a camera.
remove and strip the fuel tap
replace the fuel hoses
remove the carbs and pull the float chambers to decide how much more work is required.

You could just dump whatever fuel is in it and try it, but my experience shows that just makes things worse. The more complicated the fuel system is, the more important doing this is: for example, just trying to start a DC3 that's been standing for some time will do several thousand dollars worth of damage to the fuel pump and carburettor. On each engine....
Title: Re: I'm going to take a punt on this.
Post by: Migv6 le Frog Fan on 03 January 2021, 14:14:47
Might need carbs stripping and cleaning to remove varnish. I would put a new battery on it. Maybe a few drops of oil down the bores and allow to soak in for for 24 hours, drain fuel and put some fresh fuel in, then give it a try. Maybe rock it back and forth in a high gear to turn the engine over, before pressing the starter button ?
Title: Re: I'm going to take a punt on this.
Post by: dave the builder on 03 January 2021, 15:06:32
I'd start with a visual inspection then in no particular order....
chain and sprockets could be shagged before it was even laid up and shocks and 4 years won't have helped
brake calipers rebuild ,fluid replaced, new pads ,possibly discs
drop gear oil and check/replace, drop sump oil/filter check/replace
dump the fuel, flush it,  strip and refurb the carbs with kits, spark plugs ,air filter
tyres will be bummed ,even if they have tread
electrical system may well need work, cooling fan stuck , starter toast, corroded connectors etc etc
it can get quite expensive in parts

enjoy  :)

Bike went for £380 plus 24% auction fee, plus an additional 20% VAT.

So £565.44.

Then I have to pay for a van or trailer as it is not a runner.

Too much money and too much hassle. :)

Tempting.......Because I have no interest in chasing a big numbers.

The Big Yin said that eating well gives you an extra 2 years......but went on to say they would not be 2 extra years of youthful shagging, but 2 extra years in a home for the terminally bewildered, where you get to 'endure' 2 extra years dribbling into a beige cardigan as you stare aimlessly out the window.
