Russia has been massing 90,000 troops on the Ukraine border. Also using the same rhetoric used before annexing the Crimea. Another 90,000 on the way.
It will be interesting to see what ( if anything) the West does when it all kicks off in the New Year.
Might give the news channels something else other than Omicron to analyse to death.

The answer is SFA.
Old Joe has just pulled out of Afghanistan. He is too old and worn out to do anything.

It's possible that there will be a coordinated double pronged move. Russia invades Ukraine and China invades Taiwan at the same time. :-\

Formerly part of the USSR so Putin would see this as taking back what already belongs to mother Russia.

The only real answer is the USA / West to enter a war footing with the threat of using nuclear weapons on Beijing and Moscow in a preemptive strike.
But as democracies we do not do that, and the thought of WW3 which would end life as we know it, terrifies most of us. The danger is the non-democratic entities will not be so squeamish as history has highlighted.
No doubt all the West's military forces are already on full standby for all eventualities, as Taiwan is being threatened and the forces on the Ukrainian border have been amassing for the last year, so tin hats on everyone.
Covid could be the smallest of our worries ::) ::) :P
Where is Rod2? :D ;)

But before it was part of the USSR it was an independent country ::)

China and Russia together would be a very formidable force.

Unbeatable, in a conventional war. That's why we have nuclear weapons. M.A.D.
-
There have been tens of years since nuclear weapons were invented.
Very dangerous to assume that is the worst thing out there. Just look at all the tech changes in the last fifty years. Covid 2.0 springs to mind. Easy to deliver , easy to counteract with the correct antidote. Why lay waste to thousands of acres of infrastructure.?

It was not much reported in the British press (no surprise) but apparently the Turks were using 'swarms' of autonomous armed mini drones in Libya with devastating effect! :o
Not so long ago that sort of thing was the stuff of science fiction. ::)

No one is outgunned. Both sides have enough to destroy the other. Mutually Assured Destruction, MAD.

Indeed. But the game is that each side try and find enough of a defensive system that will give them a technical lead and time to deliver nuclear payloads onto the other side's key targets before their missiles can have any effect, if any.
The question will always be have the other side got that advantage to mount a strike without fear of total wipeout. That is what keeps MI6 / CIA and others very busy on our side of the fence ;)

Sanctions
Ukraine never to join NATO
Gas shortages and prices to go up even more.

We could always get STEMO to eat a few tins of beans and sit on an oil pipeline from Russia....we could could ignite the oil and the 'blowback' would 'torch' Russia....end of.....Simples :D
