I can't see it making any difference as long as its still Bantime at 100mph ???

I aren't sure about Ritchie, the knobheads on the roads/motorways now who drive crazy let alone if the limit was lifted.... :o

going higher would be better imho.

£1 to 1p it wont actually affect the average speeds anyway, I reckon even if it went ahead there would be no measurable difference in most peoples speeds

The Department for Transport says as many as 49% of drivers flout the current 70mph limit.

I reckon they have their figures a bit wrong based on my observations.. it's got to be more than 49%  ;D

well,  you have to assume that maybe 30% of the miles being travelled are done so in speed limited vehicles....   that essentially cannot "flout" the limit....  ;)

eg, most HGV's (ignoring the nutjob euro boys) , post office vans, and many courier wagons, even builders vans and such like....  i'm  getting stuck behind seeing more and more commercial vehicles with little notices saying limited to 55, or 60...   or 65....

i'd like the limit to be electronically enforced,  based on the performance capabilities of the vehicle , and a yearly performance based re-test....

(so we all get to drive around at full throttle in our Mv6's YAAYYYY  )

:D

(i'm being daft.... do not take that seriously.... )

Before 1965 there was no speed limit.

Many of the car magazines ( Motor and Autocar) would use the motorways for top speed tests.

E-Type Jag .......M1......1961.......150 MPH.....so legend tells us. :y

Vote winner nothing more or less.

I actually agree with it in Britain BUT would have speed limits reduced in urban areas except city arterial roads which with good guarding and proper crossings could go up

I did a speeding seminar about 10 years back.

Apart from the patronising merchent banker of a police officer (no offence to ex coppers on here) that gave the first part of the lecture, I must admit it was a real eye opener.

The main thing I remember was a fact given by some advanced driving instructor.

It goes ............... 2 identical cars driving down the road.
No1 is doing 70 mph
No2 is doing 100 mph

A lorry jack knifes up the road and No1 car stops with a inch to spare.

What speed is No2 car doing as it hits the lorry ?

The answer is 70 mph

Got to admit that thought slowed me down to the point that I've had a clean licence now for 6 years.

As for speed limits on a motorway.
The way I see it is if you do more then 100 mph in any conditions, you deserve to be nicked.
It doesn't matter how good a driver you are, you can't always compansate for the muppets on the road.

Put more traffic coppers on the road with more power to nick the dangerious / careless drivers and impound there cars on the spot.

Imho it not so much speed of the car that is the problem but f*ckwits that drive them  :(

Also make everybody retake there test every 5 years with a full medical included.

Have a seperate, very strict test for people to be allowed to use Motorways. Then remove the speed limit altogether. :)
Oh, and ban speed restricted vehicles from motorways..................going to look for tin hat. :D
Having said all that, I rarely venture above the speed limit these days anyway, on four wheels at least. And a lot less often than I used to on two wheels.Getting old I suppose. ::)

I agree with both statements....

If the motorway is congested then the traffic will roll along at at 50-60mph or whatever speed is dictated by the traffic...

If its 3am for example and you only see another vehicle every mile or so, what does it matter how fast you are going.....

1960 I think Andy. For all cars over 10 (ten) years old.

In Norn Irn the MOT test and 70mph limit only appeared in the 70,s.And as recent as the early 80,s cars only needed to be MOT,d after they were 7 years old.I missed the no speed limit era by a few years.No-one told me until several years later though. :D ;D

I reckon the French have it right. There the speed limit varies with the weather.... 120kph in good conditions and 110kph in bad  :y

Of course French motorists are very sensible and have a good understanding of weather conditions!!  ;)

The problem is they observe the speed limit. Makes me look bad when I go over there and don't. :-X

The problem is they observe the speed limit. .....

............ and by & large they observe proper lane discipline ie move right after they've overtaken instead of the tw@s over here that'll stay in the outside lane for mile after mile instead of moving back over.

Very true. In fact, that's true of most countries, in my experience. I think it's only Belgium where drivers are more hopeless than here. ::) Even Italians, whilst a bit manic, are better. South Africa - I swear a lot of vehicles have cardboard brake pads ;D plenty of tyres down to canvas, but still pull over for faster traffic, meaning they are actually using their mirrors. Not a hope here.  >:(

Personaly if there going to increase to 80 then the goverment must implament the no less than 60mph on the motorways with a £60 penalty for going to slow with the exeptions of vehicles towing trailors/caravans and ban vehicles towing from lane 3 the same as lorrys and busses.
This would make sure vehicles are traveling within 20mph of each other and your not going to come accross some old biddy pottering about at 40 >:(.

Are you implying that mirrors are for observation purposes and not purely for adjusting hair and make up then?  Very odd concept that! ;D

Seriously though I don't think an extra 10 mph is going to make much difference on the motorways, tightening up on lane discipline and general bad driving seems more important before giving folk the right to go faster.

i often set cruise at 80mph, i only over-take trucks, everyone does 90. Even more will do it if 10% rule still applies, 89mph will the norm, then get more people doing 100mph  :-\

In this country they are for drivers of certain (often Bavarian) vehicles to admire themselves, and remind themselves how the world really does revolve around a point about 3 feet above their driver's seat.  ::)

 ......

Technically they're banned from the 'outside lane' which, in practice is normally/usually lane 3, but where there are more than 3 lanes eg going east on the M62 to Yarkshire, you're allowed in lane 3, but not lane 4. This is where you see dozens of HGV's filling lanes 1 2 & 3 playing the overtaking game to see how far they can spin out their over take over three lanes instead of the usual 2 leaving just the outside lane for the rest of use mere mortals in cars.

i'd like to see introduced what I saw in Italy & other countries. Trucks were not allowed to overtake each other during rush hour! They had to stay in lane 1

Since someone mentioned towing - when was the speed limit for trailers (and boat trailers, and caravans!) increased to 80mph? I got overtaken by someone towing a boat the other day..
