Before 1965 there was no speed limit......

MOT test came in around then too didn't it ...  :-\ :-\

1960 I think Andy. For all cars over 10 (ten) years old.

Ah! A bit before my time. (only just though ;-) )

In Norn Irn the MOT test and 70mph limit only appeared in the 70,s.And as recent as the early 80,s cars only needed to be MOT,d after they were 7 years old.I missed the no speed limit era by a few years.No-one told me until several years later though. :D ;D

I reckon the French have it right. There the speed limit varies with the weather.... 120kph in good conditions and 110kph in bad  :y

Of course French motorists are very sensible and have a good understanding of weather conditions!!  ;)

The problem is they observe the speed limit. Makes me look bad when I go over there and don't. :-X

The problem is they observe the speed limit. .....

............ and by & large they observe proper lane discipline ie move right after they've overtaken instead of the tw@s over here that'll stay in the outside lane for mile after mile instead of moving back over.

Very true. In fact, that's true of most countries, in my experience. I think it's only Belgium where drivers are more hopeless than here. ::) Even Italians, whilst a bit manic, are better. South Africa - I swear a lot of vehicles have cardboard brake pads ;D plenty of tyres down to canvas, but still pull over for faster traffic, meaning they are actually using their mirrors. Not a hope here.  >:(

Personaly if there going to increase to 80 then the goverment must implament the no less than 60mph on the motorways with a £60 penalty for going to slow with the exeptions of vehicles towing trailors/caravans and ban vehicles towing from lane 3 the same as lorrys and busses.
This would make sure vehicles are traveling within 20mph of each other and your not going to come accross some old biddy pottering about at 40 >:(.

Are you implying that mirrors are for observation purposes and not purely for adjusting hair and make up then?  Very odd concept that! ;D

Seriously though I don't think an extra 10 mph is going to make much difference on the motorways, tightening up on lane discipline and general bad driving seems more important before giving folk the right to go faster.

i often set cruise at 80mph, i only over-take trucks, everyone does 90. Even more will do it if 10% rule still applies, 89mph will the norm, then get more people doing 100mph  :-\

In this country they are for drivers of certain (often Bavarian) vehicles to admire themselves, and remind themselves how the world really does revolve around a point about 3 feet above their driver's seat.  ::)

I thought towing vehicles were already banned from lane 3  :-\ :-\

.................As for speed limits on a motorway.
The way I see it is if you do more than 100 mph ................

When I finish on late shift I may have sinned on that one.  :-[  Must add, no other vehicles in front of me (everyone else is in bed).
