Title: Many thanks to...
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 05 November 2011, 17:37:41
Mr Blackviper :y

Dave came down for a bit of moral support / extra pair of hands whilst doing wishbones, dropliinks, new discs/pads and brake fluid change today.

It was really great to have both the company, and someone to work with, so thanks mate :y

On a positive note - the car is transformed.

The old front bushes were absolutely shot. And the passenger droplink had loads of play in. With the new 'bones the bushes are totally tight, and the wheel does not visibly 'kick out' anymore when you lever the front bush!  ::)

Clunk also gone.

All in all, no real snags. I was a little worried because the NS droplink, top nut, didn't appear to be tightening very well initially, but all torqued up Ok with a locknut for safety, so no problem.

The only thing that was a bit tricky, was getting the balljoints reconnected to the struts. The wishbone just won't force down enough to get it in, so ended up raising the strut a little. (anyone else ever done that? )

Torqued up on the ground, as per guide.

I've had an enjoyable day  :y :y

Dave I can only apologise about the discovery that my LPG cable is broken. I will fix it, and come to you, to change that setting :y

Oh, I reused the bush bolts, BUT used new pinch bolts / Nuts - as that one seems to get quite corroded :y

I know however I say this you may take offence, it isn't meant to be offensive but just an observational question really...

You offer yourself as a Mobile Mechanic and have done so for a while. I have seen that people have been happy and put good write ups, but why would a Mobile Mechanic need moral support whilst doing Wishbones etc?

Simple one really DLK

I DONT need moral support.

But, ultimately, Dave wanted to come down anyway for an LPG software job, so what's the harm? If nothing else, it's nice to have the company, and, regardless of how competent someone is, it's always nice to have someone giving you an extra pair of hands, to hold the other side of a bolt, or pass you tools, no?

Doing such a job is better with someone to chat to, and banter with, rather than being under the car on your own, regardless of how competent you are, or how basic the job is?

Same reason TB probably came over when you were doing those Head gaskets recently? I'm guesing you didn't NEED his help, but it was nice to have him there?

Well, today is exactly the same principle.

Like you, I have scores and scores of posts from people who have been delighted with work I have done for them, both the quality and the price, and,  again like you, I have a group of people who only ever come to me.

Ultimately, I have the skills to do my own LPG conversion, and maintain my own car without paying others, which most people would love to be able to say - So, I'm not worried at all.

Most of all - I do it because I enjoy it.

And further to my last

My area of competence whereby I am happy to work for others, is on Engines. (I've always made it clear this is my specialty, and I do not touch suspension for other people).

Therefore, the ONLY services I offer - and ever have offered - are engine work.

Whilst I am more than capable of doing jobs like wishbones, (as evidenced today) - suspension and brakes is an area of work I will not do for other people, on a paid basis, simply because I've not done enough of them to do it blindfold.

You say your question was not meant to cause offence - which I accept - and it hasn't - but, I see no other constructive reason to ask. Maybe a PM would have sufficed?

James, no need to thank me for popping down mate, you did me a huge favour today.

Having no knowledge of mechanics generally, it was great to be shown and have a go and changing the drop links, pads, discs etc. Like I said to you earlier, I'd have a go and be confident at changing pads & discs now where before I'd have got you or someone else to do it. At least now I know where the drop link is now, lol  ::)

Cheers mate, had a good afternoon and learned loads. No worries on the lead, just hope you get it fixed  :y

I'll sort it easy enough - just need a (much) smaller tip for my soldering gun :y ;D

A PM to say what exactly?

If you did not mean you needed Moral Support then perhaps you should have said what you actually meant and not left it for folks to hazard a guess, as you did actually say you needed Moral Support.

Yeah, OK Daz. I'd like you to highlight the specific part of my post that actually says I NEED moral support...

MMM  something in the water ???  Folks seem very tetchy tonight in several threads.. :(

Perhaps a 30 second pause before hitting the "post" button should be made mandatory  :)

Anyhow ... if memory serves me correctly ... James never asked for "moral support" ... his original post was entitled "wish me luck"

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=95371.0

Which I took in the way it was meant .... a light hearted comment on the work about to be commenced ... ( hence my slightly sarcastic comment regarding printing off the guides).... not a plea for a plethora of soothsayers to descend on him waving magic wands and chanting mystic words ......

:)

Just my thoughts .... nowt else .. :)

Well let me Sherlock..... Er first sentence it seems to me...

As for Jaime coming over whilst I did some head gaskets, that was surely for him to admire my good looks, as I can stand him and would not really want him anywhere close...........

Someone to talk to is nice (apart from Jaime, Mike Dundee etc) I understand that but from where I am sitting and maybe others who haven't got the 'dangle berries' to say anything, you could have chosen your words better to reflect your talents.

I think Daz's insult was out of order, we should not insult another's work, esp when it is not in their declared sphere of expertise.

I needed more than moral support doing my wishbones  ;D you have to strip everything down in the front suspension to make life easier, shock, droplink, wheel hub :(

Mine were Lemforder & came with new nuts for the vertical & horizontal bolts, but did come with new pinch bolt & nut.

Wishbones are a pita first time round. It's awkward at various stages at times. So some apprehension is understandable. But it does seem there is some frustration among the OOF community re James's reliability. So perhaps others a bit more removed from the situation might now understand some of the comments here, provided I understand things correctly, which I very well may not.  :-\

Thing is, we are ALL learning here. Even Master. The day we stop learning is the day we disappear up our own Jacksy. Weather that's wishbones, communication, reliability, work procedures, forgetfulness which is one of mine.... whatever!

Key is to note the shortcomings and improve on those. Sort it, and move on!

....IMO.  :)

(hopefully I'll also be able to follow my own advise  ;D )

my reliability in terms of answering PMs has been afwul, I am first to admit. That said, you cannot knock me, I have fixed more Omega faults for members on here, many many for free, and involving long trips, so I cannot be all bad!

I really don't think that is the point Daz is bringing into question, though.

having watched James change V6 head gaskets by the side of the road , spend hours stripping and refitting thermostats,  transfer pipes,  HBV, and all sorts of other PITA jobs in conditions only a yeti would enjoy.....  I think the knocking on this thread is perhaps a little petty......

I have again read this whole thread.

It seems some feel I have insulted James! In which case you have not read it properly.
Also I have knocked his work! Again you need to read it again.

What I did say and still stand by it is that as a Mobile Mechanic I find it strange for him to say he needed Moral Support.

So you can all climb down off your soapboxes now eh....

We all have are opinions I am welcome to mine. If you don't like or agree with what I have said Tough.

Daz.......

I can only repeat what I said last night - please point out where I said I NEEDED moral support in order to do the job?

All I said (in my first post) is that Blackviper came down "FOR" a bit of moral support (among other reasons, including sorting out his LPG query). This is not me saying I 'need' support.

Just because he came down, does not for one minute mean I NEEDED support, and neither did I ever say that. To the contrary, I had already completed the drivers side one when he got here, and was already in the process of refitting the passenger one.

You seem to be implying that, just because I had some company during (the late stages of) a wishbone change, I am therefore no longer competent to undertake the engine work I occasionally provide for members, such as cambelts?

It seems to me, that the only person who has misread anything here, is you.

i think the problem here, might be the lack of accompanying body language, facial expression, and tone of voice content in the text based communication inherent in all forums.....

maybe Daz didn't quite mean it in the way we mostly seem to have read it,  i'm sure it would have sounded , and been taken differently if it had been in conversation over a brew at a meet........

:y or maybe Daz is just jealous of the company , it can indeed be a lonely old job :y ;D ;D

.........
perhaps we should all trek up to stoke and sit around drinking tea while he works.....     it's only fair  ::)

FFS, WTF is going on.

DLK questioned something about JV6Whatever (changes cars like I change my smalls) statement about moral support perhaps giving the wrong fellers about Mobile Mechanics, and everyone jumps on as DLK said JV6Whatever workmanship is piss poor.

FFS, read the threads before being a keyboard warrior.

Above is posted as a member, not an Admin, if I had my Admin hat on, there would be no oppsing forum  >:(

Unrelated to this convo, but I turned up unannounced, as TheDaddy is a friend and a work colleague (not uncommon to pop in), and because Daz was there, just for a quick chat.  As it happened, I could make myself useful by cleaning engine parts before refitting, rather than 'helping' or providing any 'support'. So I stayed for as many cups of tea as we could get TheDaddy to make ;D

Not taking sides (we are should be one community), just setting straight a couple of facts ;)

I agree that some posts should never have been surrender in the first place. All forms of the written word can be taken in different contexts, but ffs, give James a break! Not being funny, but was there any need to take the piss out of his username as well? So what if he changes his car, doesn't mean a damn thing, except whoever gets his car is gonna have a mechanically sound car!

It's gone beyond a joke now & this should be locked. If anything this should have been a polite pm between members and not an open bitching match amongst ourselves! Rant over.

Ahhh. that'll be down to the stress and knowledge that my V6 is lacking Irmscher springs and you feel guilty about not sending them down to me.
