Spot on .... Im sure we was told on our course that if the brain was starved of oxygen for more tham 3 mins it could cause brain damage.
-
Believe the advise has changed and the priority is the keep the blood moving ;)
-
i think you will find it as only been changed if you dont know what you are doing :y
-
To be honest whatever you can do to improve the persons chances of making it to the hospital where the experts are is a bonus ... And I will continue to do CPR in the way I was trained to do it
-
Spent 20 years on the ambulance service, this new advice seems to go against what was always thought about the first 4 minutes of cardiac arrest and that the diminishing oxygen levels would inevitably be causing irrepairable damage to the brain. On a personal basis I still think mouth to mouth/nose has got to be a better option, not always a pleasant one but it's got to be down to the individual and the circumstances that they find themselves in :-X :y

At the end of the day doing somat is better than doing nowt! And by the laws of science performing chest compressions is going to draw some oxygen into the body! :y

and I think that's the idea behind it.
First Aid advise changes every week anyway 7 -1 and 15 - 2 ......... :-\ :-\
-
Exactly. Just pushing the chest rythmically causes a fair amount of air to flow in and out.
One advantage of doing the breaths, if you're not 'scared' to, is actually that you, the first aider, get a little rest every 15 seconds. If you've ever tried giving chest compressions for more than a minute or two, you'll know the potential value of this.
-
Thats very true Ljay, but I would still argue that the chest compressions alone is not the right way to go. As Im sure its one experts opinion against anothers in how things should be done

Just a little bit more to add to this topic, there is a risk that if you are little to enthusiastic with chest compressions that there is a chance that you can break the ribs which are attached to the sternum(breast bone) which can result in a flail chest which in turn causes difficulty in further cardiac compressions,SO yes VJ is saying it's easy but I would still say take a recognised CPR course because like they say a"little knowledge is a dangerous thing" :y
-
Something this advert doesnt make clear is of the hidden dangers that could happen if you go at it like a bull in a china shop... Even Sally ann objected to too much force been used on her ;) ;D ;D

My score thus far in this good earth is, on the giving, nellie the elephant 2, fella with the hoodie and big knife on a stick 1.
And on the receiving side, its 0-1 and I'm still moaning about the dogbreath of the delectable PW that initially helped out.
When I came out the hospital I bought her a lovely necklace and a tube of Colgate. It was a giggle that we were both glad to share... ;D
Was also told by a consultant chappie that a broken breastbone was most often due to the hamfisted 'thunk' of a closed fist to the breastbone in an effort to bump start a heart without defib kit. He said that the compressions would have more effect than anything (non machine) in keeping thinks going until the amb service attends with their clever kit and drugs etc.

last year i was taught 2 breaths then thirty pumps and if i ever have to do it i shall follow how i was told :y

If you gave someone a chance by doing CPR I can't think there'd be any complaints from anyone if you did 7/1 15/2 or 30/2 or what ever you were last taught. :y :y

;D everyones seen it on tv so i like to think they would have a go if i ever needed it no matter how they did it
-
Alot changed since I last did all this stuff
I was taught 7/1 and tilt head back and remove false teeth ect.
Nowdays iirc, it leave the teeth in ( keeps the form of the mouth ) and don't move the neck ;)

Actually there have been. You can be sued for providing incorrect or damaging CPR if you are a health care professional but if you are joe public you are protected by the good samaritan act legislation. Can't remember the ins and outs, been a while since I physio'd but my training included guidance on never admitting you were a health care professional or first aider. Sad really.
Pretty sure my training last june was 2 initial breaths, 15 compressions and 2 breaths etc.
-
this method will keep them alive the advert does say at the end if you are a first aider you must still give two breaths.

You do leave the teeth in or you can't form a lip seal but you need to tilt the head back to check and open the airway.

I suppose this is a technique that someone who like myself is untrained in first aid could attempt and does more good than just running round like a headless chicken waiting for the emergency services to arrive.
-
you can in actual fact still be charged with gbh if you are joe public attempting cpr (there was a case a little while ago where the cps decided it was'nt in the public intrest to go ahead with the charge...then the agrieved party started a private prosecution and walked away with a substational amount they argued due too somone having a go????...this caused brain damage and house etc had to be adapted).
Like nitro i was not trained to just pump on someone chest frantically whilst humming a tune how bloody ludicrous...it goes against how i was trained and tbh when i see it this morning i would have thought it very good april 1 st gag

thats the way we were trained...but as a paramedic turning up on blue lights...you could'nt really deny being a health care professional...mind you some of the guys i worked with i did wonder sometimes??????

I wonder if its to get Joe Public to actually do something, instead of walking past, quickly, saying " nothing to do with me just keep going, soon be out of sight". :-X
And another person dies needlessly. OK there may be compo claims but the person is still alive.
