More than 370,000 migrants who were admitted to Britain to work, study or go on holiday are now claiming out-of-work benefits, according to official figures compiled for the first time.

Dont get me started Nick.Im hoping to relax and get some sleep soon. :-X :-X ............probably the tip of the Iceberg,truth be told. >:(
And I dont see why it should be a taboo subject.Shouldnt be a problem to discuss immigration as long as we dont descend to the level of insulting people of different races imo. :y

Rather unsurprising to be honest :(

Wonder if there is scope for an Independance party for every uk country? Obviously there is no point asking a portion of the Scots electorate, but as they feel the need, I just wondered. :)
... as England has historically always welcomed immigrants in recent times, as said, is there any suprise on this particular story?

Interestingly, I was chatting to a Scottish chap who was down here for a couple of weeks on Wednesday evening. He was telling me that the majority of Scots do not want independence and that there appeared to be another agenda behind the sudden push :-X ::)

Politicians are forever pushing their countries in directions that the people who elected them dont want.They seem to assume stupidity on the part of their electors,so lie to them to get their votes and then carryout their own agenda once elected.
Ive little doubt that its happening in Scotland at present,and also happened in the UK (not just England)as a whole regarding immigration under New Labour.There was a secret policy (which has since been admitted to) of completely opening the doors and allowing literally everyone and anyone who wanted to,to come to the UK.
To my knowledge,no Govt. of any other country has ever done this before. The reason ? "to give the country the shake up it needs,and to rub the noses of the right in diversity". Treacherous,treasonous and criminal imo. Particularily when they were,at the time,appearing on TV etc. and telling us that they were making every effort to have reasonable controls on immigration,while implementing this policy at the same time. Has to be the most cynical misuse of power in modern times I would think.
So, I wouldnt say that England (or the UK as a whole) has necessarily welcomed immigration in recent times - or more accurately,havent welcomed the way it was done and the sheer numbers involved - but the elected politicians drove a coach and horses through any common sense approach to the subject,and then disgracefully,had anyone who dared to question their methods or motives labelled as an extreme right wing,nazi supporting racist / fascist.
N.B. There are actually independence movements / parties in all four countries of the U.K. although UKIP of course is different, in that it stands for UK independence from the E.U. rather than a constituent country becoming independent from the U.K.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/immigration/8451615/Almost-one-in-eight-people-living-in-UK-are-born-abroad.html
The cynicism has started again, wearing different clothes this time.These people dont believe in anything apart from their own careers, and will say anything which their advisers tell them will advance their career.

depends what they/we want Independance from? As you say. If Independance from the uk(England it seems) suits their purpose that doesn't suprise me either.
While I agree it's gone way too far on head count, let's hope uk residents will never suffer enough financially to have to emigrate to survive themselves, and then sit there moaning about how that country goes about its business. ;)

Thought again receiving uncountable immigrants without pushing 'em to be assimilated fully is really dangerous. A few ten years ago Serbia received countless albans in Kosovo who started working and making children in the same time and all of us know well what happened not too long ago : Serbia lost Kosovo her own historical territory, which belonged to Serbia all the time of history!
To go to a better place where everything is OK because the locals did all the possible to be is the easiest thing I know ever! I ask : what can an immigrant be proud of? Sit off into donation of a well operating social system? If somebody needs experience I say okay get 'em and go home ! Their life is in danger I say okay till this status is standing but after go home !
Strictly regularised child number is needed, they have to be separated from other immigrants to help 'em language learning, minimalized keep in touch with home and so on...Not a simple case but you/we can learn from experiences of different countries eg Serbia, Germany, French...
Our French friends solved this problem for a short period of time as killed off their own minorities (Bretons) during The Great French Revolution but nowadays there is a new challenge namely arabs and other nations. I must laugh all the time when I see the french national football team haha...

simple, kick their arse ;D ;D ;D
some time ago there was a debate in my school group on yahoo.. many of my school mates working in UK and USA..
some are doctors, some are engineers and some in different areas.. I told them "your country needs you .. so you have to come back.."
of course they were not happy when I criticise them :D
so the only solution is I repeat "kick their arse" ;D

It's funny how we are agreed although as Turkey as Hungary gave a lot of immigrant to the world. i personally can't understand the East - Europeans who actually leave home for foreign countries for ever as if here the life was a big pile of sh*t. We needn't going too far here on forum we can read off simply that close not perfect to live in England either and I'm pretty sure not in the US , too...
Silently I would add the US came from nothing and became great by immigrants though.

Enoch Powell began his speech of April 20th 1968 by using the following words;
The supreme function of statesmanship is to provide against preventable evils
It saddens me that such an earnest ideal can have little relevance today as those upon whom the title of Statesman can be bestowed seem to be very few in number across our country - given the propensity that many of those now occupying public office have to look after their own welfare first and foremost, they appear to be quite willing to follow the lead of a greater evil, an evil that is instilled by virtue of supreme unchallengeable power and all too evident in those unelected officials now given the right to decide how we conduct our own business and in those for whom the integrity of this country means little.
While this speech was very much of its time, the general thrust of its argument holds true - even though the actors and the stage upon which these matters are being performed have changed somewhat. This country simply cannot continue to accept untrammelled immigration – from whatever source- without consequence.
Placing the RRB (Race Relations Bill) into the historical context, and substituting EU directives and various legislation drafted to embrace the important issue of ‘Human Rights’, the following paragraph appearing near the end of the speech is quite prophetic, given our recent history;
For these dangerous and divisive elements the legislation proposed in the Race Relations Bill is the very pabulum they need to flourish. Here is the means of showing that the immigrant communities can organise to consolidate their members, to agitate and campaign against their fellow citizens, and to overawe and dominate the rest with the legal weapons which the ignorant and the ill-informed have provided. As I look ahead, I am filled with foreboding; like the Roman, I seem to see "the River Tiber foaming with much blood."
I think we have yet to see the full import of that foreboding and, furthermore, the consequences of ignoring this matter in the insane stampede to embrace political correctness above all else will be difficult for every person within this country to ignore – whatever their antecedents.
Read the text of the speech here;

I think it's a tad sensationalising for what all papers are guilty of.
371,000 is only 6.7%.
Also, note it says there are 5.5m ''foreign-born'' people here. But who's to say these people haven't lived here all their life and have just lost their job and are genuinely looking for work? Without knowing that it's difficult to assess.
Yes, there are foreigners over here taking the p*ss... but I guarantee more ''home-grown'' people are taking the p*ss five-fold!
Just my opinion though :y

Indeed, there are many, as the programme Saints and Scroungers often points out (although, on the last two occasions I watched, two families from outside the EU were caught running huge benefits frauds). The point is that there are many from overseas who are not, or who should not be, entitled to UK State handouts and this highlights the excessively lax attitude we have had towards immigration. Furthermore, unless I am mistaken, the numbers were revealed as a result of a question in the Commons, so it's hardly sensationalising by the press. I have no basic problem with helping those who suffer genuine hardship, no matter where they come from, but this figure of "only 6.7%" represents a considerable amount of money in cash terms and is simply wrong in my book. >:(

Britain is no longer Britain and it will get worse. Im glad im older and wont be around when civil war breaks out here and it will eventually. we are losing our country to people who shouldn't be here and a cult that disguises itself a religion.

Only confirms what my stepson has been telling me, except many have multiple identities and are registered in several different areas. Apparently there is no cross checking by different benefit offices. Registering and claiming benefits is their job. Minimal amount of work required to claim, getting more money than probably most of the people on here who work hard full time and pay taxes to keep these claimants / benefit cheats / scum at a standard of living we can only aspire to. >:( >:( >:(
Welcome to 2012 and Labour's new Jerusalem. I'm afraid Tony Blair's and Gordon Brown's vision for utopia is not mine. >:( >:( >:( >:(
Many migrants have come from Eastern Europe as the wage and job opportunities are much better. Having no work in much of Eastern Europe puts you below the official poverty level of earning more than $2 a day.
There are also many well educated professional people as most East European countries have good educational systems and limited opportunities for the many top scientists and engineers they produce. Three Ukrainian's I know working in the UK, one is a Professor in Bio-engineering at a top University, another is a senior project manager for a big-multinational engineering company and the other works as an IT security expert for one of the major mobile phone companies.
These are two very different sides of the immigration coin.

Net immigration and emigration in Spain. More leaving than arriving. Not surprising as the unemployment rate is truly horrific here at 20% plus nationally. Where I live in the south it is nearly 30%.
One of the top three emigration destinations fro Spaniards? Britain. seems there is plenty of (low paid no doubt) work to be had.
How times change. The last government we had here in Spain couldn't get enough labour for agriculture and construction. Within the last 7 years they had a programme (like the Australians had) to encourage Spanish speaking immigrants. They wanted and got over 1 Million, mostly from South America. Most have since gone back and many lost a packet due to negative equity issues.

Living in abroad is a dream for lots of people hereby but there is also a third side of the coin namely living in England means some prestige. If you arrive home you can pose everytime you want can tell about anything as it can be checked by nobody. We have a saying : "who arrived from afar can say anything they want".
About wage: I know some hun people there who aren't able to move home cos they have no enough money to restart their life herehome. All of them rent apartement for two times money than here plus lies on half of m2 not to mention they have to do menial jobs part time here part time there. They're just running through the day the month ... the life. I wouldn't do.
