Going to look to see if there are any error/fault codes later but in the mean time just thought someone might have a quick idea of areas to look at.
I really think it's a fuel problem and a clean of the carb might solve it, but at the moment it will sit when started ok on tick over, after a few miles and it's warmed up it sometimes just cuts out when you decelerate as the revs drop and suddenly you have a heavy steering wheel and brakes!
It starts straight away no coughing or spluttering.
Why I think it's a fuel problem;
Due to lack of funds we let the car run to a range of 8miles, we eventually fuelled it with £10 the range stayed at 8miles and dropped to 0, only after filling with over £20 did the needle move.
The fuel filter was changed last July(2011), but since it was left to run on fumes the problem has occured and not gone away.
My wife is is not happy to drive it as it cuts out just as your pulling off.
Other bits to note;
When parked on our sloping drive nose down in -deg temp it coughs splutters and cuts out, it nose of car is up when starting it is perfectly fine.
I realise this has become a rather complicated question... :P

It does seem to point to the fuel filter becoming partly blocked by tank bottom debris :-\

A clean up with the carb cleaner

Any clues as to what engine?

A clean up with the carb cleaner
If its got a carb fitted it won't run too well ;)

If it is still the same car these threads point to it being a facelift V6

They also refer to a MAF problem. Was it fixed? Was a genuine MAF fitted?
Would be easier for people to offer useful advice if you updated your profile with your car details :y

1. where has my profile info gone! the car info was there when I signed up a few years ago, is this something to do with the new website?
I also have to put a _ in my log in name now which took me ages to figure out when I tried to log in when the site was changed.
Its a V6 2.6 Elite, and it's not the MAF

Ok after wierdly having to add all my profile info back into my profile >:(
I have redone the pedal trick and other than a transmission service request 1700 there are missfires on all but cylinder 6.

Pete, I should of maybe made my self clearer, I was going to clean out the breathers and throttle body etc with the carb cleaner as when I did this in the summer it ran like a dream so I thought trying that might be the answer.
hope that explains the carb bit for you :)

Which could be attributed to a fuel starvation problem as you have suggested ;)
May be worth swapping the fuel filter first :-\

Car data didn't survive the software change last September. If its lost it since September, I need to know.
We couldn't possibly manually enter the details for 10,000 members ;)

The old software allowed login with either your Login ID or your Displayed Name, this software insists on Login ID only. There is a big message at top when you log in ;D ;D ;D
That is the trouble when you move to significantly different software, as each has its little unique advantages and disadvantages.

Ok, spent afternoon taking plenum off cleaning breathers thoughrally and all that, only been a year since I last did that anyway, there are no signs of oil and it was pretty clean so the long shot was incorrect, it has been running on a fullish tank of petrol and still cuts out when revs drop so not sure it is petrol problem.
All points maybe to MAF again? but this was replaced in July 2011, no codes either just missfire codes.
It only happens 1 in every 4 times of deceleration etc.
So should I un plug the MAF and run it for awile to confirm or does anyone have a brain wave? :-\
-
Confussed. ???
I unplugged the MAF started her up drove down the road and the car is like a rocket, MPG good to, no cutting out.
I thought the MAF unplugged would cause car to run with no power?

With the MAF unplugged the ECU goes into 'limp home mode' & uses a default map. It should run even better with a good MAF :y
To be absolutely certain that the MAF is guilty you need to get the live readings read by someone with Tech2 or a good code reader.
Did you fit a genuine MAF last time?

All sorted now thanks, with the MAF unplugged it did not revert to limp home mode, I have had that a few times it's like pulling off with one cylinder firing.
The car is spot on with it unplugged so when my GM MAF arrives I will look forward to what people are saying will be an improvement :y
But to be fair it runs as good unplugged as when I first had it can't fault the performance as I beat a golf off the line today ::)
