Title: Very Good Ramps
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 16 February 2012, 12:44:34
I am after a set of really good car ramps. need to be wide enough to comfortably fit my 17's on them,, and sturdy enough to take the weight of the Omega... and lift it high enough to do jobs like cat removal / gearbox swaps...

Anyone have anything they'd recommend?  :y

It's not the ramps, it's the jack you need. One that will lift the car high enough to place the ramps under the wheels.

With a decent jack, ANY ramps will do.

I have a three tonne Clarke trolley jack from machine-mart, which effortlessly lifts the car :y :y

Ideally James you could do with two sets of ramps to get the whole car level but up in the air, bloody hard work trying to push a gearbox uphill and lift at the same time.

If it has the full range of lift and is full with hydrologic oil it "should" be able to lift high enough. With ramps at the front, that leaves axle stands for the rear. Obviously needs great care that the car doesn't topple off or roll down the ramps etc.

I got a set from Halfrauds.
I've been bounceing omegas up and down them for 5 years without a problem.
A little narrow but do the job  :y

cheers cem. Have done a few autobox changes alone.... Indeed, not much fun. Thankfully in this instance, I can simply let the autobox hit the deck, and lift up the nice light manual one! :y

For that sort of money, I'd be paying someone to weld me a set up.
Or rather welding myself a set.

£1045 !!

a couple of hundred quid in 40x40x5 angle, and 8 hours labour at £50 an hour, and it's still gonna work out at
not much more than half the price.
You could buy a *good* stick welder and some lessons and still save money

s'pose it depends on how much time you have

Not to mention storage. I've had ramps for ages, although handy, they get  comparatively little use. Tightening wishbone bush bolts mostly.

Is hydrologic oil what you get if you squeeze out a wet Vulcan? ;)

For doing 4x4 boxes i use two sets of ramps, old homemade jobbies. then use a high lift car jack (preferably not a machine mart) to slip the ramps in. As mentioned for running vehicles some home made jobbies with an attachable ramp for easy incline would be ideal. On ebay they often go for a song as long as they are local.

Very good, but for £1200 I'd expect a better jacking beam than 2 scissor Jacks welded to a plate :o

maybe have look for something like that

I know this is an old topic, but further to my comment above:
would anyone be interested in a set of ramps like those above (the restoration ramps)

I can get 3 sets made for about £400 each as a group buy.
I'll have the first pair, so need two more definites needed for the order.
The jacking beam will be extra.

I know this is an old thread, but I ended up buying my own steel, and welding a couple of sets up myself.

Have a look on www.cjautos.org.uk. They have a range that start from £275 that are 200mm high and then you wind them up to a maximum of 400mm. expensive but well made. I looked at them at tha NEC a year or so ago.
