General Car Chat / Selling Omegas; eBay v Autotrader
« on: 11 January 2015, 06:36:06 »
I finally sold my Omega for £450 yesterday after just 2 days on Autotrader. In fact I could have sold it 3 times over. Contrast this with when I put it on eBay for the same price in November. A few enquiries but nobody wanted to pay the starting (and sale) price despite my 10 or more years of eBay positive feedback.

Nice house!

The car is not bad either  :y

Thanks. You get a hell of a lot more for your money up North and the cost of living is so much lower than down South and especially in London. I grew up in Maidenhead in Berkshire and could not afford to buy the house I grew up in now. And it was no mansion.

Ah Pete....that car is gone. I sold it in April and it's really the sale of that car that funded the BMW. I really wasn't using it enough to justify keeping it and values had recently shot up. Also, I realised I actually enjoyed riding my old FJ1200 more than driving the E-type. It did look great, but 42 year old cars don't drive so great even when they are sorted. There is quite a lot of money chasing classic cars these days as there are no returns left on ISAs and other traditional savings so some people think hey, I'll buy a classic car. Something to enjoy. At least that was the position the guy was in that bought mine.

In the late 80s I had an Auto Triumph Stag. On this particular occasion it was parked in my parent's garage with the engine running and with reverse selected. I had it held on the handbrake while I fiddled with some temperamental reverse lights. Fixed. Now that V8 exhaust burble is addictive, so forgetting it was still in reverse I hopped in the drivers seat leaving the door wide open and gave it a bit of a rev. Of course the car shot back smashing the drivers door on the garage pillar. In a state of confusion and blind panic I selected Drive while my foot was still on the throttle. The car shot then forward destroying the cupboard doors at the other end of the garage. I had to replace the driver door but the front end only suffered a creased up bumper.

That one is a Gran Coupe. Mine is the coupe; the F13. Same back and front ends though. I actually think the back end is neater than the front. Here is mine

Less than 2,000 6 series cars get registered each year in the UK so you won't see many on the road.

It's a fabulously smooth diesel engine pumping out 313bhp with a 0 to 60 time of about 5.5 seconds. Yet it's supposed to return 51mpg. I have been hoofing it a bit so I'm still in the mid twenties. Emissions are low enough for the £145 road tax band. It has more onboard tech than I have ever seen in a car. I just hope nothing goes wrong! Unlike the Omega, this car is not one for a home mechanic.

Still, I still can't quite believe its mine!

After over 252,000 miles and more than 14 years in my ownership, I finally replaced my Omega.  I finally settled on a  2 1/2 year old carbon black BMW 640D M Sport. It took me some time to find the right spec but now I have it, I am chuffed to bits with it. It's awesome and beautiful but just not anywhere near as practical as the Omega! But for practical, we have the wife's Astra.

So old faith' Omega is going on eBay just as soon as I get a fresh MOT on Friday. I had quite a cathartic Sunday afternoon giving it a final valet and polish and I am pleased it can still look so good. It's rather sad that nobody wants these cars anymore.

I can't thank you folks enough on here who have helped me and my car out over the years. A special thanks goes to Elite Pete. I could not have kept it going for as long as I have without your invaluable help. In return I hope one or two of you past and present members have been helped by me.

Anyone know where the very last production omega went?

Are these the rear? If so what do the repair panels look like and where did you get them? As others have said, £200 per side to fit and paint seems a bargain

I have bubbling at top of windscreen guessing that it was scratched during a windscreen change , the windscreen has a wee chip but the bubbling needs windscreen out to sort ......dilemma

Rust in the windscreen aperture will cause your windscreen to crack sooner or later anyway. I had to have significant rust treatment and re-spray to my windscreen aperture a year or two ago. Since had the windscreen replaced again because of a crack but that was because of a stone chip

That last photo has some significant clues. What does it tell you about the date and year of manufacture? What is that stamped above the date box? And is there something else stamped on the top side? If you can find a part number anywhere, googling it will likely reveal all you need to know

Whilst my car looks OK after a wash, closer inspection reveals some rather nasty tin-worm

Rear nearside lower wheel arch

Rear offside not nearly so bad but on the way

Rear offside upper wheel arch has been repaired many times (not very well) and now needs doing again (properly)

and perhaps the most significant I only found today after I noticed the carpet under the front passenger seat was wet. I need to get this sorted quickly

So who else would like to share their scabby bits with the forum?

Just rolled over last night on the way back from the airport with the family. It still drives superbly and continues to be a very reliable and comfortable car. A big contrast to the 1.3 diesel Corsa we rented while we were in Spain. What a relief to be back in my Mig.

I was never really in the market for a new one. I would have been looking at 5 year old 5 Litre (current version) which are now around the £30k mark. I notice the car I drove is up on autotrader right now

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201406054776432/sort/locasc/postcode/cw98hb/model/xk/advert-type/Classified/page/1/usedcars/maximum-age/up_to_2_years_old/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/make/jaguar/radius/1500?logcode=p

I still think the XK looks fabulous
