General Car Chat / DRL
« on: 13 November 2012, 13:03:44 »
Hello, am I right in thinking it's now law for new cars to have DRLs? Why is this, safety? Like a biker having their lights on? Can they easily be turned off by way of a switch, or is it made harder to turn them off? What about MOT issues? Can you tell I don't like them yet! :D

If you were to have a crash and you had them disabled I wonder how that might affect your insurance? Each to their own but I think they're a pointless chav mod. I mean between us we've managed billions of journeys upto now.

Not thinking of getting a new car, just thinking out aloud.

Omega General Help / How the hell do you get no 2 ht lead back on?
« on: 29 October 2012, 12:59:39 »
Hi peeps putting back together after chànging cam cover. The ht leads were tight when I took them off but now for some reason no 2 won't go back on. There's just not enough slack to get it in the hole square on over the plug, I've checked for slack at the back. Any ideas? Thanks

Omega General Help / Wheel alignment/steering geometry
« on: 28 October 2012, 22:53:23 »
Hi peeps, what do you think is the best approach for this?

The nearest WIM franchise to me is 80 miles away in Scarborough. Are they as good as what I hear Chesham are? I don't know. There is another place within 15 miles that also do full steering geometry. But will the local place do it properly, or just to Vauxhall's figures designed for a new car (not after 12 years of sag), as I hear WIM have come up with their own figures instead of just being within an acceptable range. Are WIMs recommendations available? I wouldn't have thought so unless you buy their services, although I know front camber is meant to be about 1'10"???

Has anyone been to the Scarborough WIM?

Also, what apart from camber bolts, track rods and rear track rods need to be galoushed in plus gas for easier adjustment?

Thanks peeps

Edit to add: The local place use the 'Hunter' alignment machine, if that's relevant?

Omega General Help / Ball joint testing
« on: 26 October 2012, 18:06:57 »
Hi peeps, what's the best way to check for a worn ball joint on the wish bone? Remove it from the pinch bolt then give it a wiggle, see if it's loose or slack? Also how are you meant to assess all the steering/track rod joints without popping them off? Thanks peeps

Omega General Help / Budget tyre recommendations
« on: 10 October 2012, 23:53:30 »
Hello all, can anyone recommend decent budget tyres for the front of my elite please? I only do 6k a year in it, rather sedately at that! Ideally I'd want a quiet one although beggars can't be choosers!

Are Accelera Alphas any good, or nankang

Thanks peeps

Omega General Help / Throttle lube
« on: 07 October 2012, 00:15:55 »
Hi peeps, can anyone recommend what sort of lube I should use for my throttle cable and bodies? I've had them off loads of times obviously when cleaning and doing work. I think the TBs are sticking a bit, which is annoying when pulling away due to it being automatic. Will a light GP oil be ok? Oh, and grease for the cable, the spring bit? Thanks peeps.

Omega General Help / 235 45 17 to 225 45 17?

Hello peeps, will 225/45/17 tyres fit on my elite rims designed for 235/45/17 tyres and still be ok? How much will the speedo be out if at all? Thanks peeps

Omega General Help / Self levelling part numbers Please
« on: 04 October 2012, 12:53:57 »
Hello, does anyone have part numbers for saloon self levelling shocks please? Facelift if that makes a difference. I'm not at my computer so can't get on TC to check.

Also, I can't see any real difference in using standard shocks with s/l springs other than the shocks having to work a bit harder? Is that right!

Thanks peeps

General Car Chat / Infiniti tyres
« on: 21 September 2012, 00:02:48 »
They're obviously a budget brand by the price, but are they ok for the money?

I'm getting full geo in the next month or so, nearest WIM to me is in Scarborough (about 80 miles away I think). I don't know if the closer non wim places will set up to your own figures, and will probably only do GMs anyway. Not that I know a great deal about it but it's quite a wide range so I've heard on here.

If they're no good I'll stick to Federal SS 595 like I've got on the back. Pleased with them so far. And I like the look of them!! Such a girly thing to say.

WIM seem to be expensive for tyres.
