General Discussion Area / Slowest Omega Owner?
« on: 06 May 2008, 13:28:16 »
Just had a look at my Mid. Just over 4000 miles. Average speed 22.1 mph and this despite the fact that I recently did a 300 mile round trip to Seville on the Motorway cruising at 75 mph!

Am I the slowest (speed) OOFer ??? ;D ;D

Didn't see what happened in the second episode as we had a power cut.

What happened? Was the baby the beheaded prison chief or the prison doctors?

Parts cost for shocker(s) a bit low.

When was the last cambelt change?

Got to be worth £350 in parts? (I'll have the gearbox please!) Is it the lack of MOT that is putting people off?

Just tried to figure out my paint code and failed.

The plate under the bonnet in front of the rad has the following:

6H1585 VP69 2RW L80 ML4 XN8 43 69W1047450

U BAU 1A02

Any ideas? Should I be looking at the plate on the drivers pillar?

Hope so.

I thought it was one of the best races for quite a while and bodes well for the rest of the year. Good result, overtaking, crashes and pit dramas.

What on earth do they make wheel tethers out of!! That is some technology.

General Discussion Area / Wi Fi free broadband questions
« on: 17 March 2008, 13:53:37 »
I am on dial up Internet in a rural area. It is actually provided by mobile phone technology and is painfully slow and not as cheap as some UK broadband deals!!

I was pleased to see a company advertising free broadband at up to 54Mbs with only an installation charge for an aerial of up to 399 euros.

It uses Wi Fi technology and I guess it is like big bWiFi hotspots provided by some form of repeater stations. The service provider appears to be the Junta de Andalucia (like a UK county Council) though I have yet to find anyone who knows anything about this intiative.

Some Q's that occur to me are why not just buy my own aerial and cable to make the connection, if the Junta de Andalucia wants to encourage the wider availability of rural internet why has no one heard about it! How can it be free when ADSL costs more here than in the UK? What limitations are theren on WiFi e.g. hosting your own website.

Any Wi Fi experts out there who might be able to confirm or allay my fears/suspicions? I won't post their website link here but can PM. it.

Thanks in anticipation

General Discussion Area / Ex Diplomatic Omegas
« on: 08 March 2008, 13:18:41 »
Has anyone ever bought or got one of the special Omegas used to ferry politicians and important people around?

I presume they have bullet proof glass and armour etc and chipped engines, uprated suspension,LSD's. Or are they just so heavy that they are worse than a standard car!!

General Discussion Area / Spanish car insurance
« on: 07 March 2008, 16:00:42 »
Just got my renewal through for my RHD replated as Spanish Omega.

shopped around different insurance companies for other quotes and out of four THREE were identical at about £250 3rd party/fire/theft. Most won't quote fully comp on "old cars"!

Here it is the car that you are insuring for ANY driver over 25! So my zillion years of NCB count for very little. 5 years is the max.

One big difference is you can't insure then get a refund. Once you have paid then that is it for the year. You have to carry and be able to produce your insurance and PROOF that it was paid to any Policeman if asked, hence the no refund. None production results in handout of automatic roadside fines.

I wonder what the EU rules will be when they "harmonise" all of the best practices!!

Personally I think that and displaying your MOT due date (on the sticker provided by test centre) in the windscreen and carrying proof of payment of road tax equivalent are all good ideas.

General Discussion Area / Minimum pit depth for a gearbox change
« on: 01 March 2008, 15:02:44 »
Last year I made a temporary pit/ramp out of breeze blocks. It was great for changing the exhaust and other under the car tasks like ATF change.

I am intending changing my auto box later this year and might build a permanent structure, with foundations including filling the blocks with concrete. Practical considerations mean a depth of block of only 44 cm with a flat floor would be best.

Is that going to give sufficient clearance to get the box off and more importantly back on? How high is a gearbox when off the car?

A major earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter Scale hit in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Epicentre - Grimsby, Lincolnshire. News of the disaster was swiftly carried by 85,000 racing pigeons. Victims were seen wandering around aimlessly, muttering, "blummin eck" and "chuffin nora". The earthquake decimated the area, causing approximately £30 worth of damage. Several priceless collections of mementoes from Majorca were damaged beyond repair. Three areas of historic burnt-out cars were disturbed and many locals were woken well before their giro arrived. Radio Grimsby reported that hundreds of residents were confused and bewildered by the fact that something interesting had happened in the town.

One resident, Tracey-Sharon Braithwaite, a 15 year old mother of three said, "It was such a shock; my little Chardonnay -Britney came running into my bedroom crying, although my youngest two, Tyler-Brooklyn and Megan-Kylie slept through it all. I was still shaking when I was watching Trisha the next morning". However, on the positive side, mugging and car crime were carried on as normal. The British Red Cross has so far managed to ship 4,000 crates of Sunny Delight into the area to help the stricken locals. Rescue workers are still searching through the rubble and have found large quantities of personal belongings (which include benefit books, jewellery from Elizabeth Duke at Argos and bone china from Poundland).

How Can You Help?
This appeal is to raise money for food and clothing parcels for those unfortunate to be caught up in this disaster. Clothing is most sought after and those items needed most include: Fila or Burberry baseball caps; Kappa tracksuit tops (his and hers); shell suits (female); white sport socks; Rockport boots and anything by Donnay; flat caps for the older generation.

Food parcels to accommodate the special dietary requirements may be harder to assemble but are needed all the same. Required foodstuffs include: Lidl baked beans and spaghetti hoops; Microwave meals; Asda Smartprice ice cream; black pudding; cans of Colt 45 or Special Brew

- Just 22p buys a biro for filling in the compensation form
- £2 buys chips, crisps and blue fizzy drinks for a family of nine
- £5 will pay for a packet of Benson & Hedges and a lighter to calm the nerves of those affected
- Tinned whippet food is also needed!

General Discussion Area / Speaker cone replacement on Household Hi Fi
« on: 27 February 2008, 10:04:01 »
I got my ancient but much loved Technics Hi Fi separates out of store last night and connected it all up. It still works after over four years but I was dissapointed to find that the main speaker cones seem to have rotted away.

They are Mission 707's. I haven't got the money to replace them with new but thought they might be repairable . Has anyone done this? The speakers aren't a regular circular shape so I am guessing that they would have to come from "Mission" if they are still in business!

Any suggestions or info gratefully received.

General Discussion Area / oil changes by syphon not sump plug?
« on: 25 February 2008, 12:09:46 »
Due to a number of encounters with rocks etc my sump plug is stuck in. Rather than take it out and strip the threads and be transportless till I got it helicoiled or a new sump pan, I get oil and filter changes done at a local garage where the guy syphons the hot oil out by machine.

I presume that this doesn't get all the oil out but if done regularly can't be that bad, can it?.

Anyone else use this method?

General Discussion Area / Free insurance and road tax?
« on: 16 February 2008, 12:49:15 »
I see that dodging car insurance is estimated at something like 5% in the UK. The latest wheeze is to replate your UK car with foreign plates. Now how would a UK policeman know your car wasn't all legal as say a Maltese car, Cypriot or even Spanish car. Anyone want to try it with my plates (only joking).

Here in Malaga province the official estimate is that 30% of all vehicles have NO insurance at all. The police here have started using the same camera technology as the UK. If the driver cannot produce proof of insurance, the vehicle may be impounded. In addition, failure to have insurance carries a fine of 1,000 euros for scooters, 1,500 euros for passenger cars and 2,600 euros for heavy vehicles. ( a euro is about 75p)

Can anyone send me a copy of this by Email please? (PM me for the address).

I found it on an old tape today but only have half of it. Can't get it out of my head. I have just spent a load of fruitless time trying to find a site to download it from. Oh for a broadband connection or even a fixed line dial up!! Third world country.
