Omega General Help / Door Opening Problems
« on: 03 March 2007, 14:09:30 »
I've got two problems with different doors (different cars actually):

1. Door unlocks ok, and inside handle works fine, but requires a real yank to open it from the outside.  Its the same effect whether it has just been unlocked or opened and closed a few times.   Hopefully just the handle mechanism needs lubricating,  but what is the best way of accessing it?  Should I remove the door card etc and access from inside (I'm not sure from the Haynes pictures that the handle mechaism will be any better accessible from inside) or is it worth squirting wd40 in the key hole?

2. When unlocking with the remote, the central locking fires and all doors can be opened except the drivers door which requires the key to be inserted and turned.  The knob has come up, but apparently not quite enough.   Once 'opened' with the key the door opens and closes fine.

Appreciate any suggestions before I start removing the door cards.

Cheers,

Ian

Omega General Help / Cam Cover Seal - quick question
« on: 23 February 2007, 08:38:27 »
Just to check.   My new replacement seals come out of the bag as two loops connected by short straight pieces.

Old old ones on the car appeared to be two loops, without the connecting bits (ie 2 loops for each cover)

So I am assuming that I'm supposed to cut the connecting bits out (manufacturing artifact or something like that).   I'd appreciate confirmation before I start cutting!

Omega General Help / Jacking/Axle stand Points
« on: 22 February 2007, 00:15:53 »
I saw a number of posts on this but couldn't find a tech guide/photos which I think would be enormously helpful.

I'm very nervous about supporting the car (esp with me under it) anywhere that is not intended to take the load,  but the problem is to position stand while the jack is in situ (and vice versa).  I've tried all sorts of proceedures with jack at angle,  iterating between jack and stand until I'm happy etc but all timeconsuming and less than ideal.    (and I still can't get my meaty stands in at all - I have to use the little ones from machine mart)

Pics on how it should be done would be great!

Omega General Help / Throttle Cable
« on: 20 February 2007, 17:55:55 »
This is likely to be dim post of the day but here goes.

Trying to embark on the camcover gasket replacement procedure and got as far as removing the throttle cable (yes that far..).   Got the little paperclip thing off and expected the ball and socket to come apart (no mention of any trickery in any of the guides/Haynes etc) but the bugger won't come off.

I'm aware that I could leave it attached to the plenum but as a) as I want to give the plenum a good clean and b) I'm stubborn, I want to remove it.

Is this a brute force job (I'm concerned lest I damage the throttle mechanism or further damage the cable ball) or is there something I'm not aware of?  I've given it a soak in WD40 in blind hope but no joy.

Cheers

Newbie Welcome Area / Hello chaps (and chapettes)
« on: 14 February 2007, 17:29:36 »
Hi,
I found your forum after being highly entertained by the thread on VxON about the cambelt party.

I'm on my second Omega (98 2.5 estate manual) - my wife now has my first (a 1994 2.0 estate).   That car (the 2.0) has done c. 185k and is still going strong.  The MOT man usually insists on the odd bit of suspension/brake pipe, and last time was rude enough to suggest that his headlamps were too opaque -but not bad considering his age and mileage (the car is getting on a bit too ;D).

I think Omega's are cracking cars for the money.  Sure they have their problems but so do all cars (even Mercs).

General Car Chat / Which bench grinder
« on: 25 May 2010, 11:28:21 »
I'm planning to buy a bench grinder using my machine mart vat free voucher.   I am considering this:

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cbg6rl-6in-bench-grinder-with-work-light

or this

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cbg8w-whetstone-grinder

I have never had a grinder before so not sure if the whetstone is worth having over the second (fine) wheel.

Any thoughts?

General Car Chat / Vauxhall Batteries - Warranty?
« on: 18 February 2010, 13:20:44 »
The previous owner of my 3.2 put a new Vx battery (the blue GM one, not the GO type) on the car.  Must have been about 2 years ago - I think I have the receipt in the file at home.

Its failing when the car has been sitting for a few days.

Does anyone know what the warranty on these is and if it is transferrable across owners? and indeed if it would be honoured by any Vx dealer or just the one that supplied it.

General Discussion Area / Trade Club - Dealers Withdrawing?
« on: 22 May 2009, 15:07:29 »
Called into Spratley's (friendly local stealer) this morning.   Apart from the fact that they didn't have any kind of sensible size antifreeze or brake fluid, they said they had withdrawn from TC :(   They thought other dealers were doing the same as they end up making a loss.

Anyone else heard this?

I suspect 2L auto would be dog slow and probably quite thirsty.

General Discussion Area / Car Tax
« on: 26 February 2009, 15:45:15 »
Is anyone up to date with what the barstewards did in the end with the proposed car tax changes?

I think end of Feb was the optimum time to cash in the old tax/ renew early March in order to maximise the time on the old rate,  but having just read the form, it seems that if you retax within 21 days you don't get a refund.

General Discussion Area / New launch from Apple
« on: 25 February 2009, 14:24:19 »
Apple Computer announced today that it has developed a computer chip
that can store and play high fidelity music in women's breast implants.

The  iTit  will cost between $499.00 and $699.00 depending on speaker size.

This is considered to be a major breakthrough because women have always complained

about men staring at their breasts and not listening to them.

Looks like they will close within a year - very sad to see an icon die :'(

I was talking to a colleague in Stockholm.  GM have told them to find a buyer for themselves by the end of the year or they will pull the plug.  GM are not even trying to find a buyer, and the Swedish government have refused any bail out.

General Discussion Area / Ceiling Speakers
« on: 27 January 2009, 21:27:26 »
I need to re-plasterboard our kitchen ceiling and as well as rearranging the lighting, I'm considering installing some flush ceiling mounted speakers :)

The idea would be to chase the cables into the wall and take them down to a connection plate/box at a convenient location  - I can imagine the kind of thing (bit like a tv aerial connector plate, but for speakers), but don't know if it exists...   :-/.

Anyone done something similar?

General Discussion Area / Which Trolley Jack?
« on: 16 October 2008, 16:42:04 »
I'm contemplating a 3T trolley jack..

Looking at the following
Sealey 3003CXQ http://www.pvrdirect.co.uk/productinfo.aspx?catref=3003CXQ&gclid=CPf01-WGrJYCFQVOtAod0wu-zA

Sealey 3030CXD  http://www.justoffbase.co.uk/Trolley-Jack-Yankee-3ton-Rocket-Lift-Sealey-3030CXD

Clarke CTJ3000G http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/ctj3000g-3-tonne-professional-garage-j

SIP 7259  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-SIP-PROF-3-TON-TROLLEY-JACK-FAST-LIFT-07259_W0QQitemZ310090007515QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item310090007515&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

The SIP was recommended in an old copy of Practical Classic.  The Sealey's and SIP have a quick lift function, but the Clarke has the best min/max lift by a couple of cm, and is cheaper.   The Sealey 3003CXQ and SIP have a soft pad which I quite like.

I am inclined towards the 3003CXQ.

Any opinions (surely not..), experience, alternatives?
