Omega General Help / Power Sounder Disconnection
« on: 20 May 2012, 17:24:19 »
Just about to disconnect my power sounder as I suspect the rechargeable batteries are draining my main battery. Removed driver side wiper and rubber seals as described in maintenance guide but access is still a bit tight to say the least! I now have a throuple of questions 1. Is it possible to remove the power sounder for further investigation without removing the whole scuttle? 2. Do I just disconnect the power sounder or should I disconnect what looks like a horn as well 3. Does the alarm noise come from both the horn and the power sounder. ;)

Omega General Help / Cannister Type Oil Filter.
« on: 13 May 2012, 18:13:08 »
Removed the housing for the cannister/cartridge type oil filter to access oil cooler pipes connections. I now need to re-fit but couldn't find a torque value for the cannister type oil filter housing - Anyone know what it should be? ???

Omega General Help / Thread Sealant Again.
« on: 12 May 2012, 19:11:43 »
Noticed when stripping out the oil cooler that the base mount for the inlet manifold screws had a blue sealant on them and thanks to the forum I now know this is a medium strength thread lock. :)

My question now is the screws that secure the oil cooler cover plate in position have a similar sealant on the threads but it is red in colour - what will the difference be? Might I assume it is a high strength sealant, but would it need to be? :-\

Recently removed my cartridge type oil filter housing to get access to the oil cooler pipe connections and I was expecting to find a rubber seal between the housing and the engine casting but there wasn't one - there is just a circular recessed groove on the rear of the housing that marries with a raised circular rim on the mounting position that locates with the housing - how does it make an oil tight seal? ???

As I managed to get it off in tact I intend re-fitting it as I already have a new cartridge type filter as opposed to doing the screw-on conversion.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Battery Problems?
« on: 09 May 2012, 18:02:23 »
Bought a new battery (correct one for the car) from Vx stealers about two years ago - no problems. Being doing mainly short runs, town driving (approx. 4miles each way daily). About two weeks ago I left the car unused for a week then when I came to start it the code input required came up on the dash display for the radio and the engine would barely turn over - not fast enough to fire up the engine, so battery is now off the car - should mention it is a maintenance free type and the dot bubble is now showing black.

I would have thought the battery should not have gone flat in this time especially now the weather is warmer (well warmer than winter anyway).

Would the alarm system put a drain on the battery - I have been thinking of removing it given the bad press the power sounder seems to get - no problems with that as yet (fingers crossed!) :-\

Can anyone recommend a charger for this type of battery and how much would it cost. Alternatively, I was thinking of taking it to a local gargage and asking them to slow charge it. I wouldn't have thought the battery was totally u/s given its age?

Omega General Help / Blue Thread Sealant.
« on: 07 May 2012, 18:54:59 »
Recently removed my manifold flange mounting which had blue thread sealant applied to the securing bolts - anyone know what the blue thread sealant is called (other than blue thread sealant) - Will Vx stealers sell it? :y

Omega General Help / Radiator Drain Maintenance.
« on: 07 May 2012, 18:51:40 »
Just wondered while I have got my coolant drained from the system is there anything to maintain on the radiator drain - washer/seals etc - is it possible? Also, when tightening the drain thumb screw is finger tight sufficient? :y

Omega General Help / Water Leak Investigated - Advice please.
« on: 05 May 2012, 17:37:18 »
Hi all, after putting up with an annoying water leak over winter I've finally got round to investigating the problem having no under cover working facilities! I have been topping up 50/50 mix approx. 1 litre per week and the leak has remained constant.

Removed the air intake this afternoon and discovered water in the vee of the engine - so I guess I now need to remove the injector rail to get access to the thermostat housing etc - still haven't identified exactly where the leak is coming from.

I have made a pressure tester out of a second hand expansion tank cap with a schraeder connection so I was going to pressure test the system tomorrow - What pressure can I go to 10psi?

Any advice/words of wisdom on how to proceed welcome. :y

Omega General Help / Water Leak
« on: 20 November 2011, 17:37:08 »
Still trying to pin point an annoying small water leak (1 litre per week) - the leak itself is not visible but the plastic under tray and top of the sump casting is wet as seen from the front of the car looking down :( The car is only leaks while the engine is hot/pressurised - the water drips off the plastic under tray onto the floor depending on the chamber of the surface as to which side.

Have tried to understand where the water leaking at the front of the engine would come from - OK water pump seems obvious but it was replaced about a year ago so see no reason why that would be the cause. Would a leak from the thermostat housing/coolant bridge or oil cooler cover plate show itself on the under tray at the front of the engine?

I think I will be making a coolant pressurisation cap and do a cold pressure test - I would just like to try and narrow down the possibilities/source of the leak if possible.  :y

Omega General Help / Having a few niggles - need advice.
« on: 27 September 2011, 17:15:55 »
Hi, having a run of niggles right now. I have discovered water running down the bell housing (seen from under the car so I know I need to change the heater bypass valve) that was niggle No.1. Losing approx. 1 litre of coolant/month at present. I know what I need to do with this one. :)

Niggle No.2 - I set about doing an oil change and when I put the car up on the ramps I discovered the pressed steel plate with the sump plug in it was covered in oil - I removed the plastic under cover and have traced the leak to the next joint up where the oil sump casting meets the bottom of the cylinder block casting (I believe this to be the two part sump type) - looks like its leaking from the front left corner, when you look at it standing in front of the car. Couldn't find this job in the maintenance guides. I read up how to replace the sump gasket in Haynes but it has put me off more than anything especially as I don't possess an engine hoist :-\. How much would it cost to have this job done at a garage? Consequently, I didn't bother changing the oil as it will have to be dropped anyway.

Niggle No.3 - When I removed the plastic under cover I initially thought it had oil on the top side of it (the side you see as you look down into the engine from above) but on closer inspection it seems like water??? however, I can't see where it is coming from. :(

I have only just recently replaced the rear coil springs and was hoping for a good few months of trouble free motoring as demands on my time are quite high at the moment. I don't mind an occasional car maintenance job but I am not wanting to make a full time hobby of it!

Any ideas/advice welcome :y

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Wooly Speaker?
« on: 31 July 2011, 13:37:17 »
Hi all, just wondered if anyone could offer some direction as to where I might look/try first re. problem with my audio system.  :y

The problem seems to be coming from the drivers side door speaker (Elite model). There is a woolyness/reverberation/distortion which is more noticable the louder you go. If I adjust the balance heavily to the left the problem goes away.

TIA
Mike.

Omega General Help / Cannister type oil filter housing.

Omega General Help / Self Leveling Suspension.
« on: 12 July 2011, 14:30:18 »
Hi all, does anyone know the acceptable tolerance on Omega level (Elite with self leveling suspension). What I mean is when measuring from the ground to the under side of the wheel arch lip on one side compared to the other how far out can it be before you should be concerned. :P

I assume the pressure to both shocks would be regulated equally and balanced. :-?

Also, am I right in thinking that as long as the shocks don't leak they are in good order. I have also carried out the bounce check and it just goes down, then up, then stabilises instantly on both sides.

Any comments welcome. :)
Mike.
