Thread Sealant Again.
« on: 12 May 2012, 19:11:43 »

Noticed when stripping out the oil cooler that the base mount for the inlet manifold screws had a blue sealant on them and thanks to the forum I now know this is a medium strength thread lock. :)

My question now is the screws that secure the oil cooler cover plate in position have a similar sealant on the threads but it is red in colour - what will the difference be? Might I assume it is a high strength sealant, but would it need to be? :-\

My understanding is the "Blue" thread lock is designed to be a medium hold on fasterners that may need to be removed and refitted several times such as brake caliper carrier bolts/inlet manifold etc.The "Red" is a permenant hold in effect meaning that once it is secured it probably won,t need removing again.

Strange why it went on the oil cooler plate as we have all found out that it does need removing during it,s life !! ;D ;)

I didn't have any evidence of locking compound on the threads of my oil cooler when I re-sealed it.

Are you sure it isn't the after effects of a previous owner using Red Hermetite on the threads?

Now you mention it Andy it could have been red hermetite (there was definitely a resemblance to that). It wasn't remnants of the sealant used on the oil cooler plate because that on mine was grey and I suspect that might have been the original sealant as the car has only done 33,458 miles with full history (same family last 11 1/2 years). ???

The new sealant for the oil cooler plate from Vx looks like it is black - supplied in a mini sealant tube that is applied with a silicon sealant type gun/applicator.

Update: Used Red Hermatite for the cooler plate screws and the sealant for the oil cooler plate turned out to be grey same colour as the original so all good - cheers. :y
