General Car Chat / Re: Breakdown renewal
« on: 14 March 2016, 12:01:33 »
Im with Autoaid. Its effectively an insurance policy, which costs around £30 p.a. If I break down I call them and they send one of their local breakdown contractors who recovers the car home. I pay the breakdown guy, and then claim the money back from autoaid.
Only used it once and it worked fine for me. Might not suit everyones needs though.

Ignoring the movement of the England/Scotland North Sea 'border' as regards North Sea oil revenue and just as a piece of nonsensical nonsense, can someone say what percentage and how much revenue does scotch whisky add to the exchequer?

The ratio of Scotland/England would suffice?

Where is it manufactured again?

Hhhhhmmmm.....

£3.95bn P.A. according to the Scotch Whiskey Association. Or to put it another way A Nice Wee Drop in the ocean  ::)

£3.95bn is sales. Contribution to the exchequer is 76% of that. Certainly enough to keep wee Nicola in designer clothes and hairstyles, and maybe enough to keep Salmond in deep fried Mars bars.  :D
Joking aside, its a pretty insignificant sum in the overall picture.

I wonder what they would say if England voted to remain and Scotland voted to leave ?
Unlikely I know, but it would be interesting to see what would happen.  ;D

I read some treasury figures online a couple of years ago which suggested the overall subsidy was very close to £1 billion per month.
Cant find them now though. If I do, I will post a link. I would imagine the figure will have increased dramatically recently, due to the collapse in the price of oil.
I find it mind boggling that the SNP are hell bent on Scottish independence, yet also hell bent on remaining within the EU.
They used to recognise the stupidity of this, but changed their minds sometime in the 80,s. Around the same time as Labour did a huge U turn on the subject.
I think the EU referendum may show that the Scots aren't quite the bunch of Europhiles that wee Jimmy Cranky would have us believe though.

Something like that yeh. It was ok after that. Problem only appeared after the stuck throttle episode. Ive just had the cam cover off and all looks fine. Used a length of wood to listen and it sounds like it could be from an injector on pot 4 or 5.
Its not that bad tbh.Im just concerned that as it happened after the throttle sticking open, this has caused some kind of problem.  :-\

General Car Chat / Noisy old Merc.
« on: 12 March 2016, 10:44:22 »
At the MOT station last week with my old 2.5D, I started the engine after the test was finished and the throttle stuck open. It revved its nuts off for a few seconds before I switched it off. Discovered the linkage had got caught on something so sorted it there and then.
Problem is, ever since then, at idle it sounds like an old black cab that hasn't been serviced for a long time. At higher revs at doesn't sound so bad, but still a bit knocky.
Noise is definitely from the top end,so Im thinking valvegear related ?
It still performs the same as it did previously, so presumably not bent valves or similar. Knackered lifter maybe ? :-\

Sorry, posted in wrong section. Thought I was in gen car chat. Hopefully a kind admin will move.  :-[

General Car Chat / Re: So what have you done to your car today?
« on: 03 March 2016, 18:04:04 »
Took my old Merc (27 years old / 222000) miles for its MOT today.
Had to replace two bulbs.  :)
I paid £350 for it two years ago and get infinite mpg. Best car Ive ever owned in certain respects.
None of those respects are in any way related to speed though. :D

I have driven many V6 Omegas  and Im pretty certain My 24v Senator would have outrun all of them.   :)

If I had seen that at the time - at that price- I would have bought it. Although I suspect a lot of other people would have done the same.
I loved my 24v Senator, and have always had the idea of another one in the back of my mind.
Would have to convert to digidash though. Its a must. 8)

Extremely fugly imo.Like an Audi TT gone wrong. If I were spending the kind of money involved, I would want something that had beauty as well as performance.

General Discussion Area / Re: Cash and Credit Cards
« on: 02 March 2016, 08:40:07 »
There are Credit Cars out there that when you join them they will give you 0% interest on Cash Advances for 12 months or so, meaning the Cash Advance can be paid into another existing Credit Card Account so as to wipe out all or some of the Interest Payments.

Short term fix and using additional Cards can be a slippery slope for getting yourself into more issues.

The competition between credit card companies is white hot at the moment, so many of them will allow you to transfer your balance from one card to another with an interest free period of up to 40 months.
MBNA will also allow cash transfers to pay off bank overdraft. Interest free debt is much easier to reduce / pay off. :y
This may well be a good option for the op, but as said, debt counselling advice has to be the first thing to do, if the sums involved are significant.
