Omega General Help / Wishbone bolt.
« on: 17 August 2016, 15:09:42 »
Changed o/s wishbone yesterday. Easy enough job. Today I'm doing the n/s which isn't so simple apparently.
Access to the bolt for the rear bush is difficult, but I managed to undo it ok. Then lost the bolt in the subframe. Managed to retrieve it using a magnet on a stick, and now need to insert it from the top which is proving a problem. I have it taped to the socket so it doesn't fall off, and try pushing it down from above but it doesn't want to go far. Looks like the holes may be offset ?
Anyone have a magic trick for this ?
Tia.

Fitted a new lamda sensor to the sons Punto. It was effin tight, so I had to chop half of it off so I could get a socket on it, but got there in the end.
Then went to the dentist to have 3 fillings. When I got back, I fitted the o/s wishbone before getting called in for my dinner.
Hopefully fit the other one tomorrow. Down the pub for a couple of soft southern shandies shortly.  :)

Finally, at long last, removed the remains of the stuck locking wheel nut. Took it to a mate who has a mig welder, hoping he could weld a nut on top of it and then use a socket to get it off. He had run out of wire for his welder though.  ::)
He got his set of small chisels out of his workshop and proceeded to hammer at it using a small chisel, until the sweat was running off him.
He stopped for a breather and a mouthful of cold beer so I took over. Whacked it twice and it started to turn. It was off the car in 30 seconds.
He swore like a trooper.  ;D

I did a bit of oxy / acetelene welding at college in 1975. Does that count ?  :D
Lots of good info & advice there Nick & Kevin. Many thanks.
I think I will look at something around the couple of hundred quid mark, plus essential equipment, as simply buying the cheapest thing I can find will probably result in toys and dummy scattered all over the floor.  :y

I'm toying with the idea of buying a Mig Welder. Thinking of something cheapish, but good enough to be useable for a beginner.
Anyone knowledgeable on such things who can offer advice ?
Tia.

Given the budget and the requirements I would be looking at an early LS400. I would be a bit doubtful about getting a half decent BMW or Merc for a £1k budget. Volvos - I know less than nothing about them.

Can't you just fit a dog grate and then throw them in the boot?  :-X
You had a dog grate?...

Cue a Monty Python sketch... :D

You had a boot ! ? We were tied to the rear bumper and got a sound thrashing if we didn't pick up enough pennies off the road during the journey.  ;D

If I ever have the misfortune to become a granddad there will be no kiddie seats going in my car. My days of driving along while screaming kids  trample sweets & chocolate into the upholstery and then puke up some more all over the place are long gone.
If theres no kiddie seats then I have the perfect excuse why I cant transport them.
My kids inflicted it on me, and I shall sit back and laugh if and when it happens to them.  ;) ;D

In relation to this thread, is the much real world difference between the auto 2.6 and auto 3.2 in terms of fuel economy and power delivery? As there seems to be no 3.2's for sale anywhere. Were they less reliable?

I had a 2.5 v6 for several years and recently changed to a 3.2 elite. The difference between the two is pretty significant. After coming from a 24v Senator to a 2.5 v6, I have always believed the smaller v6,s to be an underpowered engine for the weight of the car.
The 3.0/ 3.2 versions are much better, and roughly on a par with the 24v straight six.
I still think the Senator and its engine were better than any Omega though.  ;) :D

Cant be arsed converting it tbh. ;D Im sure someone will snap them up though.  :y

Not unlucky at all Terry. Its a lovely car that I bought did all the usual Omega maintenance stuff to, and then proceeded to do more unnecessary things to in order to get it as close to my ideal Omega as I can make it. :y

When Ive finished it I will probably sell it and buy something completely different that needs a load of work doing.  ::) ;D

If they are the later ones I will have them.  :y

Cant remember relevant part numbers. Are they the spin on type or the later ones ?
