Omega General Help / Re: An idiot asks. Gunson Ezzi-bleed?

If used correctly you should not have brake fluid going anywhere you don't want it to. :y

Fluid leak only occuring because of a split in the pipe, (now fixed), but this is now not a tight fit, so there is a little seepage.

What I'm more concerned about is the fact that despite there being plenty of air in the system, I don't seem to be getting any air bubbles coming out of the calipers when I'm bleeding the brakes.

Make sure you are not using a fully inflated tyre.  Max 15PSI I believe with these kits?

I'm using a space saver placed on top of the engine. Running it about 16-17psi as checked on one of those digital pressure gauges.

Omega General Help / An idiot asks. Gunson Ezzi-bleed?
« on: 31 January 2011, 17:15:01 »
Firstly, sorry for what may seem like a stupid question chaps.

A bit of background. I had a seized rear caliper, (off side), which I've replaced. During which, because I had sprained the flange nut without realising, I ended up loosing most of my brake fluid.

I had a mate come round the other day to help bleeding the brakes using the old two-man method. After a couple of hours we still hadn't managed to bleed even the first caliper, (near side rear). I had the jar end of the tube submerged in brake fluid so as not to suck any air back into the system, and he kept his foot on the brake untill I had shut the bleed nipple on the caliper.

He would pump and hold, I'd open the nipple and some fluid would come out followed by loads of air bubbles. Then the pressure would drop, requiring me to close the nipple and him to pump again. As I said, this went on for a couple of hours untill late into the night. At that point we called it a day, and I bought a Gunson's Ezzi-bleed the next day.

So, here's my question.....

When I'm using the Ezzi-bleed and I open the bleed nipples, (so far done near side rear and off side front), I'm not seeing any air bubble escape from the tube attached to the bleed nipple. I'd have thought that the brake fluid being injected under pressure would force the air out of each caliper once the bleed nipple was opened, therefore making it clearly visible through the bleed tube attached to the caliper?

One thing of note is that the clear plastic tube attached to the cap that fits onto the master cylinder does leak fluid ever so slightly. Surely it cant be likely that any air in the system is being purged at this point?

Or is what's happening perfectly normal?

Just one quick word of warning though chaps. The first time I attached the Ezzi-bleed and pressured up the system, I ended up with a huge spurt of brake fluid exiting the tube that goes from the bottle to the master cylinder. This was caused by a tiny split in the clear plastic pipe. I took it back to Halfords and we looked at all the other eight items that they had in stock and all eight had the same defect. The hole / split was so small that you could hardly see it with your eyes, but you could feel it by running the edge of your finger nail along the pipe. Problem was solved by pulling the pipe off and cutting a little bit away.

In advance, cheers   :y

Thanks for that, I have already ordered the DVD earlier yesterday, so should get it Wednesday or Thursday, the tool kit, is it a main dealer supply only :question does anyone know of any mobile mechanics that would do the timing for us :question and does anyone know roughly how much it would cost :question

I only ask as i have recently found out I have all the systoms of brain tumour & have had urgent appointments to go to at the hospital and still have to go to, and with the car being off the road I am struggling to say the least, and I need to get it done asap :( .

The cambelt DVD is well worth the small price it costs.

I got a V6 cam locking set off eBay a couple of months back for £52 delivered. yes, it's a little steep, but so long as the box and the tools remain in good condition you could proberly sell it again on eBay for £40+. Just do an eBay search for Vauxhall / Saab V6 cam locking tools and you should be able to find a couple for sale.

Failing that I reckon that this place should have some in stock; http://franklin-tools.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_FRANKLIN_STOCKISTS_2.html#nw Theres even one in Mersyside, but I've no idea how much it would cost.

Good luck with the head tumor.  :y

Bit far away for me

However, if you want me to grimace, suck air through my teeth and say "ohh, that'll cost you" from the other end of the internet, then just let me know.

A torque wrench/bar.

Most motor factors or even Halfords sell them.

Those Halfords ones are pretty good IMO. Calibrated to within 1% as well.

well worth spending a little extra on one of those as opposed to something cheaper, (and not as accurate).

Omega General Help / Re: Oil filter canister. 12mm hex drive?

Sorted. Old 'O' ring not needed.

Omega General Help / Re: Oil filter canister. 12mm hex drive?

And one last quick question....

Once the old canister is removed, there is a large rubber 'O' ring that looks like it fits just inside the lip on the engine block.

Before fitting the new spin-on canister, does this 'O' ring need re-fitting? if so then I guess a new 'O' ring would be a good idea?

Cheers.

Oh, further thoughts on this I've still got a good lid and bolt but a broken filter body so if yours is ok you could have my lid :y

Thanks for the tip above Cliff.

Judging by how tight the canister was and the state of the old filter, I reckon the oil hasn't been changed since the Romans were busy nailing Jesus to some wood  :o which may explain why the canister was so difficult to remove.

Even so, I'd still prefer to use a spin-on filter and already have all the parts needed. Cheers anyway  :y

I've got one if you can wait until Sunday ;)

Thanks but I'd like to be cracking on with it as soon as.

About the only jobs I can be doing is this, adjusting the handbrake and bleeding the brakes.

The car is starting to do my head in now, so I just want to hurry up, get it sorted and on the road.

Omega General Help / Oil filter canister. 12mm hex drive?
« on: 26 January 2011, 03:31:56 »
As per the tittle really chaps.

I've managed to cut off the chewed up cap of my oil filter canister, removing the very dirty filter element inside in preperation for converting it to a spin-on oil filter.

Inside, attatching the canister to the block is a hex drive. The biggest hex drive that I have is 10mm, which is too small. So in order that I buy the correct size hex drive tomorrow, I just wanted to confirm what size hex drive I will need.

12mm?
13mm?
14mm?

In advance, many thanks  :y

I agree: cat back exhausts for 2.6V6 including all fittings from eternalcar £112 total.

I've just had a look on their website and it shows no listing for the facelift model?

Are the pre-facelift exhausts the same as the facelifts?

for future reference when i swap my omega for carlton at my lock up,i always put one of the windows down fully while car is sitting on its own running, thinking this might happen one day! doesnt hurt to be preventative plus of course engines running with you locked out of it,ultimate nightmare!!

Yep. Likewise, that's what I always do, (for example when de-frosting the car in the morning).

Had it happen on an old Peugeot of mine. Engine running, shut door, car locked itself.

Mr brick, meet Mr window. That was a cold and wet drive to work that morning.

IMO cleaning the breather properly isn't the work of a moment.

Don't get me wrong, it's an easy job, but labour intensive to do a really good job of it.

I'd be VERY suprised if a main dealer had done the job anything close to properly.

Follow the excellent guides in here, whip the plenumn, throttle body and intake trumpet off and do the job yourself. It isn't difficult so long as you amke notes of where stuff goes and bag & label all the nuts and bolts up.

Could you not use a couple of the chain/strap type filter removers turning opposite directions to crack the lid off?

Believe me, it was stuck fast. Even with a 28" breaker bar I still had to put quite a bit of pressure on it.
