Omega General Help / Re: Burning coolant smell?
« on: 03 February 2008, 15:22:07 »
Most coolant leaks (actually, ALL in my experience) only manifest themselves when the system is under pressure, ie being pumped when the engine is running.  More so, of course, if the system is being pressurised by cylinder compression (if your HG has gone).

Anyone know WHY piston No.1 wears more than the other three?  Did on mine, too!

I know next to nothing about 95 Omegas, but just in case I can help, does it have remote release from the key (if so could it need a new battery?).

Could it be the fuse that feeds the solenoid? (wherever that is).

... When it reaches its' top speed of 149, it'll be doing 9.9 miles per gallon. Heck, almost into double figures.

It will only be generating peak power as it hits 6,000 RPM, of course, so it's not quite as bad.. Makes you think though. :o

Time to put the damn calculator away.

Kevin[/quote]

Hang on - you're playing with your calculator while driving at 149 mph?? :o  I think you should have another look at the Highway Code, cos I think that at least one of those actions isn't recommended.

Anyway, the Sport button on my 2.2 definitely doesn't lock out top (4th) gear; unlike most auto cars I have driven (particularly BMWs and Toyotas).

Omega General Help / Re: Hot Leg
« on: 23 January 2008, 21:57:30 »
When you find out what's causing it, please let me know, cos my heater gives out virtually no heat at all  ;)
On the recent frosty mornings I'd have given anything for a hot leg (ideally 2, but 1 would have been an improvement); mind you, when my left leg got too hot, I could have driven with my legs crossed, using my left foot to operate the pedals, till that got too hot .....

sorry, this isn't helping you is it!  Does it still get really hot with the heater turned down?

Message received loud and clear  :y will do both.

Having viewed the 'how to' link - am I right in thinking it's just friction that holds the pins in place?  (and that funny black split collar at the end of the pin).  If so , could they ever work their way out (towards the middle of the car)?

37
Thanks, guys - I know I SHOULD replace both, but I'm trying to save time AND money at the moment.  The previous owner must have just replaced one side some time before I bought the car  ::)

I don't have a Vauxhall trade club - how do I go about getting one? I assume this will give me a discount at the stealer? (Obviously I'd be happier with genuine VX parts).

Due to my car having been "pre-abused" rather than "pre-loved" I need one rear disc, but Vaux will only sell me a pair (£94 + VAT).

Does anyone know the sort of price I should be paying for one?

Halfords quoted £85 for one - or £15 with a Halfords trade card.  When I went back with my trade card, turned out to be £64!  I guess the first guy read the wrong line on his screen ::)

I'm also tempted to order new ones off fleabay - seem to be £45 inc P&P for 2 discs and 4 pads. Sounds good - is there a catch? Anyone tried this route?

Any pointers would be gratefully received........

Omega General Help / Re: handbrake adjustment
« on: 18 January 2008, 23:22:38 »
Thanks - sounds like star adjusters first, then cable to "suit my personal preference" (which is lower than the current 12 clicks which means that it fouls on the central armrest!).

Omega General Help / handbrake adjustment
« on: 18 January 2008, 23:11:17 »
Hi

Got to put new pads on rear discs tomorrow (poss new discs as well).

I'll have to adjust the h/brake - presumably I adjust the cable first and then the 'star ' adjuster?  And is the cable adjuster readily visible under the car (in the middle?).

I won't need any special tools will I?

Cheers,

Thanks, yet again  :y, for your invaluable advice.  I think that 'tread carefully' is the order of the day for me.

Hi

I am beginning to suspect that oil/water mixing (H/Gasket, or oil cooler, or other) is a weak point of some VX engines.

I am looking for a new car at present, and saw a Zafira (I need the luggage capacity :() which had a milky deposit on the filler cap. I wiped it while ou ton the test drive, and checked again a mile later, back at the garage - slight milky dep. again.  Car had done 16k miles (and that looked genuine by both the serv. hist. and the condition of the steering wheel/interior etc).

My query is:
Is this definitely a sign of impending doom, or can this happen if the car hasn't been on a long run recently - I thought I read that somewhere?(I'm assuming it's been doing 50 yard runs from one side of the car lot to the other for a month or so).

Any advice would be much appreciated, before I either buy a pup (dog?) or turn down a good value family car.  :-/

Sorry if you've already got the answers you wanted, but

1) A new voltmeter costs from £4.99 (Maplins or similar).  It's actually a multimeter so you'll be able to use it for other little electrical jobs (continuity testing etc) [but be careful on 240 V electrics if you're not sure about it].

2) I've always assumed that using the key in the door-lock to lock the car instead of the remote WOULDN'T set the alarm, but I'm not sure about this - you could check, I guess locking the car with a window open and then trying to trigger the alarm by waving in front of the motion sensor.

Omega General Help / Re: Newbie & shuddering start to 2008
« on: 05 January 2008, 11:33:36 »
Hi

I'm not nearly as experienced as the other guys here, but my two pennorth........

As a newbie, I wouldn't expect you to come here offering advice to others - after all, you're a newbie! That's what it means, so don't feel guilty.  If you continue to use the forum, there WILL be times in the future when you can offer advice - e.g. find a good local garage that treats you well, and maintain a good relationship with them. Oh yeah, you've contributed that already ...... which brings me to my 2nd point, which is that in my humble opinion (IMHO) I would try to be very diplomatic about querying your garage's charges.  You don't want to ruin a relationship and end up having to rely on your Vaux dealer for evermore over the sake of £70.  Your garage may well rely on a bit of mark-up to keep their labour charges down - no-one likes being ripped off, but we've all got to make a living.

If you're not convinced that the ign coil does need doing, you may be able to say to them - pl. just do the sensor first, and we'll see if that cures it. If not, can I come back later in the week do get the coil sorted out.  Also, if the garage ISN'T making money from marking up parts, they might be quite happy for you to provide the part yourself.

Last point - assuming you are in a position to afford the repairs, consider the cost of those repairs a) against what you paid for the car when you bought it and b) divide it by the number of months that you've owned the car trouble free up to now - it won't feel so bad if you do that.  Hope you'll soon be back to enjoying the comfort and security that you're used to. :)

Omega General Help / Re: Heated front screen
« on: 04 January 2008, 22:42:19 »
Kevin,

If you want a heated seat (and I guess it would only be for the coldest couple of months of the year) get a heated seat cover that plugs into cig. lighter. I got mine from Woolworths for £10-15.  It works a treat. :)

It's not the neatest look, but like I said, it keeps you warm.  I generally switched it on for say 5-10 mins and that was sufficient to keep the cold at bay.  I found that I didn't like sitting on the 'leather-look' (ie plastic) material, so turned it over and sat on the nylon woven side.
