Omega General Help / Awful noise coming from steering rack/pump
« on: 27 April 2010, 18:47:21 »
Hi Guys,

I started the car at the weekend with the steering on full lock and there was a real racket coming from the front. It was a definate tap/rattle and was relative to engine speed. I gave it a rev and it cleared, but as soon as I straightened the steering it made the noise as I turned the wheel. I reversed off the drive and after 10 yards it had gone altogether.

Every morning it makes this noise now and will clear once revved up a bit. This to me would indiciate the PAS pump?

I have had a small leak from the reservoir for a while, but the level is good.

Does anyone have an idea as to where I should look next? Do PAS pumps normally expire in a noisy fashion?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Ta, Platty  :)

Just out of intrest Mick, where did you get your Chip from?

Chris.

Off a bloke recommended on here.
I think most have used him for chipping there tractors.
Did the job ok but with err.. for want want of better words, side effects.

Mick

#if yours is a 427 variant Mick there are 2 or 3 other chips that give less smoke and similar gains in power!! its all down to personal preference!! :y

How do I identify my variant?

Look on the back/front of your ECU and there will be a Bosch number, the 427 relates to the last 3 digits of this number.

Mine is a 427. I have now lowered myself to the depths of constantly tearing the arse off the car, black smoke galore, stuttering at 1500rpm, and absolutely massacred clutch.... but I wouldn't change a thing about it and it still fetches a minimum of 5 mpg more than without!?

I have grown to not even notice the side effects now. Poor thing has done 198k and hasn't got much left in her so she may as well enjoy herself.

Omega General Help / Re: Estate load cover not very good?

Hi guys,

I seem to be having a lot of trouble with the load cover in my estate.
When I want to remove it I slide it all the way to the rear and it slides out as it should. The trouble is once removed, the bars all fall out of the 2 plastic runner bits and I have to rebuild it every time I want to put the lot back in again.

Do they all work like this or is something broken do you think?  :-/

Regards

Platty

Me know understand?....But I'm easily confused :-[

Do you mean the plastic runners that are fixed to the side of the car? :y

Mick ;)

Sort of Mick, but the last 3/4 inches each side is a removable section that the load cover collects in before you remove it. It seems that these have a latch mechanism to hold the cross bars in place when the whole assy is removed - mine are pooped  :(

Well... apologies for the delay in replying, but thank you for the answers - even though I almost forgot about my thread!

So its the 2 plastic inserts that need relacing then... I think it will probably be easiest if I take a photo before making a request in the parts section. AFAIK they are angle cut - but I had better check.

Omega General Help / Re: Running 2.5td without viscous fan?

If you throw the viscous in the bin it may warm up slightly quicker (only very slightly) but the most likely candidate will be the thermostat.

Omega General Help / Worse economy in cold weather?
« on: 07 January 2010, 13:53:38 »
Hi Guys,

Don't know if anyone else has noticed any sort of drop in economy during this cold spell, but I seem to have lost quite a few miles per tank based upon the same sort of driving. Rather than getting 550 from a tank, I am barely seeing 450 an equivalent drop of about 6mpg.

I am assuming this is mainly down to the car being on choke for longer when started from cold - any other factors?

Anyone else notice such a difference?

Omega General Help / Re: What Battery For My TD
« on: 17 December 2009, 09:59:56 »
I just checked mine and its an 019 with 850 CCA and 95 Ah reserve capacity.

It is huge and just fits in the space provided - had it for 3 years no problems - got it on the cheap from Halfords.

I agree with Entwood - change the header tank comlete with level sensor. This should fix the "coolant level" warning too.

The viscous will make naff all difference IME - I have not run one for 18 months and in the summer the gauge climbs to 95 deg and the fans kick in and it dros to 92.5 - it will do this all day long whether driving or stationary.

Change header and see how it is IMO

Omega General Help / Re: OIL LACK WARNING?and what is that pipe?

My TD gives out this code from time to time, seemingly random.

I just ignore it as I keep a keen eye on the oil level anyway.

My MID usually shows 49-50mpg which when I work out accurately seems to equate to about 40mpg.

That is on a manual 'box which helps and is based upon a 30 mile dual carriageway commute everyday.

If I am on a mission then it will be significantly less  ;D

My intercooler fan is seized!
Would it be better to just ditch this as I can`t really see it actually doing much when it is working.
I whipped mine out and it was solid. If you can get the circlip off the outside and knock the fan off then you are able to drip some oil down the shaft and leave it to soak over night.
Next day, hold the shaft in a vice and with some oil just keep rocking it back and forth until it is unseized.
Once it spins more freely, then run it across a battery for a while and it will get faster and faster until it is fully operational again.
I have just done this to mine, will hopefully have it back on the car in a week or so and see if there is any difference - or if it ever comes on for a start!

Ripped the undertray out tonight during an oil change which I couldn't complete as CAS decided to supply me with the wrong oil filter!  >:(

Anyways, once I have fresh oil in her, checked her over and hopefully eliminated my hot running issues I'll test out the removing viscous theory.

The only time these can serve a function really would be too draw air through at a standstill?
The only time they serve any useful purpose is when they are in the bin!  ;D

mine has no undertray and at around 40 degree in spain, it runs lovely at 90ish, full bore up a long hill with i.c fan on it rises to around 95/96
as sson as i hit the top and back off it comes right back down to normal hope that helps !!

Hang on a min here ........
I've not been aware of my intercooler fan working - will this cause my temp to rise to 100 on long climbs?
Not sure if it will make a huge difference or not...

I removed mine about a year ago because it was seized solid and collecting muck and sh&t which was impeding the flow somewhat. I planned to un-seize it and refit it via a switch. Needless to say this has not happened as yet  :-[

Right J, mine's still got the viscous fitted, (though I've yet to hear it 'kick-in'), the undertray's been removed, and there's no cowl around the viscous.
The viscous doesn't kick in does it? It turns constantly with the engine as far as I am aware.  :-/ (sapping power and making noise along the way)

I don't run a viscous, but still have the cowl and under tray in place and I cannot get the gauge to go above 96/97 no matter how hard I try.

Never done anything to the cooling system except replace the 'stat about 6 months ago because it was running too cool.
