Just done mine and as people say GM Red is cheap enough on either TC if you have a card or auction site.

Omega General Help / Re: Petrol, does it make a difference.

Yep you are right, however what a lot of people don't know is that the ethanol content has been rising for a number of years from around 2% to now this year 5%, ethanol though an Octane booster actually causes fuel economy to reduce. At the moment in the UK there is no date for the introduction of E10 though Germany has had it for a couple of years and was not well received, fuel economy will suffer even more as well as any possible damage to seals etc. Not sure if the Omega could ever run on E10.

V-Power is very good if you need the high octane stuff for say Japanese imports and bikes, however I have found both the Omega and Corsa run great on Esso especially Supreme, I learn't recently that Supreme is one of the few fuels that are still to not have Ethanol added apart from in South West.

General Discussion Area / Re: Cornwall
« on: 06 February 2014, 12:22:26 »
My parents moved there when I was 6 and my sister was 4, lovely place back then to grow up early 70s onwards. Family still live there sister owns a stables near Lostwithiel and has a good life my parents are both retired and live just outside of St.Austell in the family home. I left for the Army in 1983 and never went back, love to visit but work is very hard to come by decent pay even harder unless you work for a national company or the public sector. Changed beyond all recognition with conjested roads and very high house prices. Communications still not good with single track A30 in places, Newquay airport limited flights. Weather is dismal in the winter and everything gets damp, my wife wont visit between October and March and shes a geordie!

I was a keen surfer love the North Coast, Watergate Bay my favourite, stunning, I go for long weekends in the summer and enjoy it but steer clear of the school holiday peak, June and early July and September is the time to visit.

A lot of people retire there, many move away again after a few years when friends and relatives find the distance to visit difficult to cope with. Services which are taken for granted in other parts of the country difficult in a rural area, main hospital in Truro a bit of a hike for instance depending on what part of Cornwall you are in, high speed broadband still not prevalent and cable services non existant as is public transport.

General population of the county is ageing fast which is putting pressure on social care, the young due to lack of oppurtunites tend to leave after college and or uni, my village I grew up in has very few young families in it, the school bus stopped 9 years ago when the children using it fell below 3! My sisters daughter's school is due for closure in three years because there is not enough new intake to make it viable after that, they are already down from 5 to 3 teachers in 4 years.

Hope this does not sound too negative because it is a lovely place with some stunning scenary and I do enjoy a visit, but for me living there will never be an option again.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: Aux heater pump Fuse 24?

Thanks for that advise I will give it a go first at the weekend, car will be stone cold then. Hopefully I will be able to sort this once and for all.

I don't think it is getting to full temp, in the current weather temp gauge does not get even halfway, on the move falls to the first marker above the needle rest position. Never had good heat in the car since owning for three years. I am going to run some flush through the system, Forte, flush the matrix again and change the thermostat and see how that goes.

The pump is not running defo because I tried it last night, no vibration and the pump is cold, ignition on position 1 and the climate panel lights up, fans start then fade away after about 10-15 secs. Not convinced its getting power but will look again at the weekend, though appears not cause the lack of heat issue, both pipes from matrix are very hot, to hot to hold this is what has got me stumped.

Its not blowing cold had the blender flap fixed for the middle two vents, it blows warm. I will give it another flush and get the lazy stat changed as suggested.

Thanks for the replies, my 2002 Omega came with the pre facelift hand book. Also just tried that and yes hot air does come out however pump is not running, I put a meter on the connector and no power pump is quiet, not sure which fuse covers it if not 24.

Normal operating temp is between 75-85  when it goes over 90 fans kick in, in winter like now runs around 75-80 when normal driving, only goes up when stuck in traffic.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Aux heater pump Fuse 24?
« on: 20 January 2014, 21:51:26 »
I have been having problems with my heating for a while and pulling my hair out with it. System flushed and matrix pretty clean to honest. Today I looked at the pump under the expansion tank, both pipes from heater matrix very hot and going into the pump however pump is not running so I investigated further.

According to the handbook Fuse 24 is for the coolant heating now I am guessing that is for the pump, no fuse in it. I duly tried to put in a pump and it fell straight out, very loose no grip whatsover. Fuse 25 next to it is fine which is for the sun roof which I don't have.

I checked the power to the pump dead, had my son hold a fuse in, still dead. My questions are:

Is this the correct fuse for the aux coolant pump or for a diesel fuel heater hence not used on a 2.6?
I have not taken the box off but can I jumper the connection across to the un-used fuse for the sunroof, I do not know how they are connected at the back of the box?
I tested the heater with the engine off when at temp heater fans come on for about 20 seconds then turn off, pump is cold and silent.

Lastly does the pump not working effect the heating to that extent?

Sorry for long rambling post but I am cold and tired. many thanks for any advise on the above in advance.

Good for power steering and increasingly hard to get because Dextron III is supposed to be backwards compatible so guess its not made in much quantitiy now.

Omega General Help / Re: Engine temp gauge
« on: 17 December 2013, 22:51:58 »
Just run the a/c up now for 10 mins just took it off of eco.

However temp gauge has started working again but noticed driving along it only got to the one mark above the stop and that was town driving. Then in went down to the stop and then moved back again, parked up to wait for my son to finish work with the engine on sat for a good 15 mins after about 5 mins the gauge moved quite quickly to just over the half way mark and the heater got hotter, then it dropped rapidly back down to about 75 mark below the 80. Think I will do the tests as advised in previous posts over the Christmas break.

Thanks all for the advise, I will do the hose test at the weekend from cold, I don't have the A/C on much in the winter keep in ECO the car is cold enough as it is :)
I had the thermostat replaced when the cambelt was done as it was an easy job to do at the same time along with the water pump, probably a bit too belt and braces because at the time the car had only done 35k miles. Heater has never been good though.

One question on the HBV, I have no water leaks at all, but can the HBV jam and not leak, would the HBV test prove this by disconnecting the vacuum pipe. Not sure if it has much bearing but car has just passed the 54k mark. I had the cooling system flushed when the new rad was fitted earlier in the year, would not that have cleared the crud from the system, tbh made no difference to the heating. Sorry if asking a stupid question but I am no mechanic.
