Omega General Help / Re: Crank Shaft Sensor problem - is this right?
« on: 19 December 2009, 16:06:48 »
I think that I am right in saying that some of these are connected and I believe that they are not in chronological order so these may be old faults not wiped from the system. (Don't shoot me if I'm wrong)

This is the old trick question isn't it? My money's on wishbones too but the drop links have probably also gone. I replaced both on mine and chucked on some roll bar rubbers for good measure.

Take it back to the garage and ask him to show you the fault as your 'mechanic' says that he's talking out of his arse. Ask for the supervisor to be present as well.

Omega General Help / ICV problems
« on: 15 January 2010, 19:06:24 »
I had a problem a while back that my car was cutting out on idle. I cleaned out the breathers (In fact put a new hose on) cleaned the ICV but its still doing it. I had a spare ICV which I also cleaned but that's making the car idle at 1000 all the time. Shall I just get a new ICV or have I missed something stupid?

**IMPORTANT**

You *MUST* always put the speed rating as stated by the manufacturer on the car, irrespective of how fast you drive.  You may invalidate your insurance otherwise.

Not strictly true. You can go up but not down. Similarly, you can go wider but not narrower. However, your profile must be the same.

should not be a problem. Dont  panick if 'oil lack' comes on either. The first time I had that happen was on a French m'way and all sorts  of visions about what had happened. No strange noises so continued to service area that was nearby. Oil level not below half way but topped it up anyway
This is quite common, its very sensitive!

As to the sludge, I shouldn't worry, we've had a cold spell and you've got ally heads. If worried, do what's suggested and change the oil. I have this on my 924 turbo and it was never an issue. Don't panic! Its not a Fiat or an Alfa (Little personal joke to myself)

Usually VX tensioners are 15mm but being a 'foreign' engine it might not be.

I've got to say that I'm a cynical git and like to buy cars without the cambelt done and then do it myself. That way I owe no one anything except me. I've been strung along soooo many times,do the work yourself of get someone you trust to do it.

Well done for getting the wonga back though!

cheers guys, but I already have my v6 toy. see here (its a pdf)

i converted that myself :) if ever there was a project "not worth doing" then that would be it... but to me it was.. and still worth the year and a half it took me.

granted the auto would sap a lot of the power, but disability forces me to keep it... i guess the general feeling is not to bother. maybe it would be best reserved for a different project  :-/

Reckon you're right.I could see it in a lightweight sports car but not a heavy weight bruiser. Sell the engine and get a v8 (You can tell I like V8s can't you!)

IIRC, there are sump issues associated with this conversion moving a transverse engine into a rear wheel drive (Unless you're using a saab lump). You are also going to loose most of the puff with the autobox because it'll be changing just as the turbo gets on song. With regards to torque,no turbo four banger is going to match a v6 for creamy delivery. I'd say 3.2 all the way but if you are really brave and want massive power,a chevy 5.7 crate engine can be had for £1600 with four bolt mains and £250 stright out the box. You can quite easily find a camaro, firebird Vette set up with 400 bhp and it'll be a lot more exciting! Trust me.

Omega General Help / Re: coolant leak
« on: 17 December 2009, 00:51:16 »
What you can do, to verify that this is the point of leakage, is to pressurise the system. There are special pumps you can buy to do this but it can easily be done with a footpump or low pressure airline. You feed in the air line through an air tight bung in the header tank. Gradually pump until you feel the pressure build up, this will exagerate any areas where there is seapage (It also won't hold pressure for 5 minutes if this is the case)

Likely to be the HBV. Not too expensive to fix.

« on: 22 December 2009, 01:25:22 »
Guys, you've kinda hijacked a newbie's post here somewhat.  :-X

Diane, I don't know exactly what your budget is but by my reckoning, you should try and buy as specced up a car as you can in the first place. True, you can transplant leather at a later date. I may have missed what your budget is or what year and type you are looking for but there are a fair few Miggys about and you can afford to be picky. If it were me, I would definitely look for one that has a good long MOT, something that's had cambelts and waterpump done (Or better still, buy cheaper and get one of the many guys on here who know what they are doing to do it for you) I'd also recommend looking for one that's had its wishbones replaced and the idler done too. :y

Does sound like the timing's out, can you turn it over freely by hand (with a rachet)with the plugs out?
