Cheers for the quick reply,

Thought as much, that it'd need a new one....

Hmmm, may have to see if any of the forum experts will have a go at it, as Im not sure ive got the skill, knowhow, tools and/or patience for it, (+ Ive began a list of other jobs which need (read I'd like) doing).

Omega General Help / that shouldnt be doing that - oil filter...
« on: 24 August 2011, 20:41:50 »
Hi all,

Decided to clean my breather system today (v6) I really should have waited and done the rocker cover gaskets at the same time as I have a small leak from the 246 side, but anyway...

After using copious amounts of carb cleaner an oil change was needed, not a problem I thought as I have been meaning to replace the oil + filter since I bought the car.

The filter however had different ideas. When turning the 'cap' to remove the old element, the whole thing started to rotate  :o - the removable cap is stuck fast.

Not wanting to damage anything I simply changed the oil leaving the old filter in place.

However, I have no Idea how long that filter has been there - I suspect at least 10k, maybe more, and perhaps longer if it also 'stuck' last time. The oil was fairly clear suggesting its been fairly well maintained, but even so.

Anyway, what are my options now? Can this be sorted relatively easily (+cheaply), do i need a new 'cup' bit, or am I now looking at a cartridge style mod?

Any ideas, suggestions and directions gratefully recieved

ta! :y

Omega General Help / one and a half keys
« on: 08 August 2011, 10:45:18 »
Hi all, wondering if someone with a bit of knowledge about keys can help?

When I bought my car it came with two three button keys, however one of these keys is missing approx 60% of the blade as it has been snapped off at some point.

Both fobs open and close the car etc, though obviously I can only use one to start the car!

Id quite like a spare, so was wondering if someone can tell me whether its just the horseshoe bit I need, or if some tech 2 jiggery pokery is needed?

Car is a 2000 facelift elite 3.0

Cheers!

Newbie Welcome Area / Potential Omega Owner - Buying Q?
« on: 20 July 2011, 13:06:51 »
Hi all.

Been looking at buying an omega for a while now, and as prices seem almost insultingly cheap I cant think of a reason not to.

Been looking at a 3.0 v6 elite on ebay, and tempted to go have a look in person, the only concern I have is mileage. The car has 160,000 on the clock. Although Im not to concerned about the engine having done that much (as long as serviced correctly, the car allegedly has a recent cambelt)what sort of problems should I expect suspension, rust, electrical etc wise from a car having done this much?

Id probably be looking to change to MV6 suspension anyway.

Also I know its hard to say, but for an average condition omega of this mileage, what would you guys consider a good price?

Cheers all and thanks in advance!

General Car Chat / That lasted long.... :(
« on: 29 August 2011, 14:24:22 »
Im now the owner of a one of a kind banana omega.

Woke up today after a night shift to my girlfriend saying "you didnt park very well last night, your car is on the pavement..."

Knowing that I wouldnt have left it like that, I went outside to find someone had kindly driven into the mig at enough speed to lift it a couple of foot from where it was parked onto the pavement, and then made off.

Damage; well they've hit the passenger B pillar and rear door hard enough to move the sill about 8" into the car. Needless to say its now a write off.

To say Im gutted is an understatement.

Unfortunately I have to leave it opposite a junction, but its a quiet residential area (usually).

According to neighbours they pretty much destroyed a wall about 100m away and couldnt get the car started, then pushed it down the road into mine.

Im guessing they were trying to bump it, succeded, and drove straight into mine, a mig wont move that much by people pushing it. No skid marks, looks like they didnt even brake.

I asked if any of the neighbours thought to take the reg, but typically they didnt, no.

Police arent interested as there is no other driver - wouldnt even give me an accident ref number, or crime ref no :(
 >:( >:( >:(

So, now im left with losing 6 years no claims, or just breaking it and trying to get some money back that way. Given my excess and the value of the car I'll probably break it.

Could anyone give me a rough idea of what sort of money a 3.0 saloon elite breaks for? No sat nav, boggo standard display and broken ccr2006, everything else in good condition, cambelt covered under 300 miles.........

cheers

General Car Chat / Re: "mileage correction" - clocking question
« on: 25 August 2011, 01:18:35 »
Well, i was hoping it'd be more accurate than the 'up to -10%' standard unit, but appreciate it may not be.

I dont really need a calibrated speedo to know that real speed is 35 when stuck behind those who think NSL means 40 rather than 60, but would be nice to justify my heavy right foot to swmbo ("see love, just trying to make progress and actually do something near the speed limit for a change......")

Just didnt want to add an indicated 100k to the car for the privilidge.

if you want to be fully legit... :y

Not that worried...

 ;)

Unlikely the car will have any other owners after me, and even if it does I dont want to reduce its mileage, (no point low miles anyway with nearly full dealer checkable history + some indy stuff too) but to have it what it is now, just with a calibrated speedo.

General Car Chat / "mileage correction" - clocking question
« on: 24 August 2011, 23:02:08 »
Just a quicky,

I'd quite like a calibrated speedo on my omega, however most police cars have covered vastly more miles than my car...

Not being a digital display, would i be correct in assuming that the mileage readings can't be adjusted on ex police speedos?

cheers

General Car Chat / Cambelt Sowth West - Bristol area
« on: 25 July 2011, 21:04:11 »
Hi all!

Still on the omega hunt and a few more Q's.....

Seen a couple of 2.6 and 3.0 elites which need cambelts doing. I know a few members on here offer a fitting service (no time or inclination to do myself), is there anyone in the south west who does this? If so How much?!!!

If I was looking to a independent garage to do the belt, tensioner and waterpump what is a ballpark reasonable figure to expect?

Thanks!!!

General Car Chat / Bought one
« on: 27 July 2011, 20:06:06 »
Well, that was quick.

Maybe Im just impatient, but today Ive gone and bought a 2000 w facelift elite 3.0

Its not immaculate, and in need of a cambelt change, and a few bits and pieces, but has low miles and was, well, very cheap.

I'll try to get some photos up at some point in the future, but for now Im a very happy man!

Shame I cant really drive it around untill the cambelts done, but hopefully that'll be sorted soon! (Jamesv6cdx YHPM!!)

Not very interesting, but thought Id share anyway!

General Car Chat / Re: Buyer Beware...
« on: 24 July 2011, 13:51:21 »
Thats just it, known issues arent necessarily a problem, as long as the price is right. The elite i looked at yesterday apparently was relisted due to a "timewaster who didnt turn up", however If Id have won it, there's no way Id have paid for it when I got there, its like he's described a different car.

Just makes finding a good one all the more rewarding I suppose!

General Car Chat / Buyer Beware...
« on: 24 July 2011, 11:32:39 »
Well, my hunt for an affordable omega started in earnest yesterday, 260 miles travelled and an MV6 and an Elite lloked at and test drove.

Now, this is probably a bit of a rant (apologies), but why do people lie in their descriptions of cars? Firstly the MV6 (advertised in newbury on PH for £1255), Ok, this wasnt too far off, but the owner had neglected to mention several issues, such as a large mark on the rear bumper, missing buttons on the dash etc. Given that i told them it was a 180 mile round trip, id rather they were honest, but I assume they think if they can get me there I'll buy it whatever condition?

TBH the car was ok, and drove well, just was looking a bit to tired for the money, considering what else is available.

Next, an elite on ebay now this was a complete shed and the owner a blatant liar - dont get me wrong I dont expect showroom condition, however when I ask if there is any rust, and am told "the rear arches have been done, they arent that tidy but the rust has completely removed, there isnt any rust..." I dont expect to drive from newbury to kidderminster to find that the rear arches offset the star silver with a lovely shade of brown, that is so bad i can pick large pieces off with my fingers.

That coupled with the ad not mentioning other major problems - oil leaks (however the owner cant open the bonnet due to a broken catch...), vibration through the steering wheel, window buttons broken / missing, dubious history to name but a few = a complete waste of time.

in case anyones thinking of bidding this car is on ebay currently around £420 (cant post link in my second message!)

pm me for full details of whats wrong

Anyway, undeterred, Im off to see another 3.0 elite tonight (hopefully).

Alternatively, If anyone has a tidy enough elite or MV6 (facelift) with life left on the cambelt and thinking of selling for £1100 or less send me a PM!!!
