Buyer Beware...
« on: 24 July 2011, 11:32:39 »

Well, my hunt for an affordable omega started in earnest yesterday, 260 miles travelled and an MV6 and an Elite lloked at and test drove.

Now, this is probably a bit of a rant (apologies), but why do people lie in their descriptions of cars? Firstly the MV6 (advertised in newbury on PH for £1255), Ok, this wasnt too far off, but the owner had neglected to mention several issues, such as a large mark on the rear bumper, missing buttons on the dash etc. Given that i told them it was a 180 mile round trip, id rather they were honest, but I assume they think if they can get me there I'll buy it whatever condition?

TBH the car was ok, and drove well, just was looking a bit to tired for the money, considering what else is available.

Next, an elite on ebay now this was a complete shed and the owner a blatant liar - dont get me wrong I dont expect showroom condition, however when I ask if there is any rust, and am told "the rear arches have been done, they arent that tidy but the rust has completely removed, there isnt any rust..." I dont expect to drive from newbury to kidderminster to find that the rear arches offset the star silver with a lovely shade of brown, that is so bad i can pick large pieces off with my fingers.

That coupled with the ad not mentioning other major problems - oil leaks (however the owner cant open the bonnet due to a broken catch...), vibration through the steering wheel, window buttons broken / missing, dubious history to name but a few = a complete waste of time.

in case anyones thinking of bidding this car is on ebay currently around £420 (cant post link in my second message!)

pm me for full details of whats wrong

Anyway, undeterred, Im off to see another 3.0 elite tonight (hopefully).

Alternatively, If anyone has a tidy enough elite or MV6 (facelift) with life left on the cambelt and thinking of selling for £1100 or less send me a PM!!!

I had this trouble when I I was looking for my first (that was 7.5yrs ago, so rust was less of an issue), the amount of crap out there.  An awful lot I looked at then were clearly clocked (prefacelifts wear better, so traders will try it on).

There are some good ones out there, all 4 of 5 of mine (2 bought with known issues) have been good, the other one was an cheap emergency Elite I bought in order to save a holiday to Wales. I was just beginning to like it when it decided it had had enough. Nothing to do with the thrashing I was giving it at the time. No, of course not ::)

Thats just it, known issues arent necessarily a problem, as long as the price is right. The elite i looked at yesterday apparently was relisted due to a "timewaster who didnt turn up", however If Id have won it, there's no way Id have paid for it when I got there, its like he's described a different car.

Just makes finding a good one all the more rewarding I suppose!

My saloon was bought (swapped actually) on a whim. Realised what I'd stumbled upon, as although I'd driven several Omegas over the years I had never owned one and driven it in anger, and decided to LPG it while I was searching for what I really wanted. Just shy of 3 years later I found it and paid top money for the car I wanted... A few more little bits to do and it will be perfect :y

Pity you weren't looking 3 months ago... My saloon, although a MFL and with a few rust spots, would have done you proud and the change would easily have sorted the rust

well :-[ ive just done a near 600 mile round trip the plonker I am won the car on fleebay 52 reg cd 2,6 auto estate 74k looked in good order. when i got there after 5 hours of sitting on the train all i wanted to do was get the car and drive home in my ignorance and rush i never really noticed that he never switched the engine off. The car itself looked fine bodywork was excellent in my opinion looked mint no reason to doubt it. ok back tyres need replacing soon.

drove away thinking good deal paid £970, when i turned engine off to fill up it started with a clonk  :o I thought starter motor trying to convince myself drove home through really heavy rain drives and pulls well .Next day the guy must have been round the body with a touch up pen or something as a few little scratches and scuffs can be seen

not as bad as it sounds but this was a car dealer but at least service history etc checks out fine mileage is correct but no record of a cambelt change.

thanks to some help and advice on here going to need new starter motor and a bloody good service with cambelt etc

Now i have just been offered a job great yes but gotta get something a little more economical as i will be doing 40k miles a year so after all that i may have to trade the car on unless the job falls through then i will have to get the work done

dont give up owl theres some good cars out there they may just need some tlc like this one the omega has to be one of the best value cars around all cars of this age alas will need some money spent on them unless its up for top dollar

Really annoys me when people "neglect" to state issues. I've done a fair few long trips for cars and always been happy and the seller has been honest. I had one bad experience with a lying timewasting sod. Arsehole isnt the word. anyway he ended up with a broken nose lol.

Just hang in there you'll soon find a gem :)

Even that's no guarantee... I paid top money for my estate and still needed to do a few bits and pieces ;) Admittedly, I could have left the cambelt change for a few months but made sense to just get it all done ;)

Next on the list will be rear doughnut bushes and new wishbones with the front bush poly'd, as they are starting to get a bit soft ::), plus a trip to WIM. Oh... And a new Radiator as it's running a bit hotter than I'd like and it has had kseal in it in the past ;)

So far I've spent about £1350 on parts for my "Low Mileage, Full Vx History" car (although that does include spare oil and filters) including the tow bar, LPG kit and inspection (some £800 ish)  :o

Admittedly, I have been exceptionally fussy and anal about things (like changed the HBV during the LPG conversion just because it was easy to get to) but it does show that a top dollar car from a dealer gives no guarantee of it being in top condition ;)

We cannot condone violet acts on this site. It's a piss poor childish way to 'win' a disagreement
