Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: front parking sensors
« on: 16 February 2009, 21:07:54 »
Here is what I did: I bought a simple device with 4 sensors which were all intended to be fitted to the rear of the car. The control unit was supossed to be conected to reverse lights. I fitted 2 sensors to the back, 2 to the front, got an additional timer. The timer receives signal from brake lights. Every time I brake it sends power to the sensors' control unit for pre-defined ammount of time (appx 5 seconds but is adjustable). For front sensors, I made from aluminium a special casing that they fit in. These alu holders were painted black and positioned in the plastic grilles next to fog lights - looks quite good.

Actually I have seen some comparison tests where Tom Tom didn't do too well

Still not a patch on factory fit items, which can work accurately even without and valid gps signal
.

but an improvement

Have a look at a price of any factory-fit sat-nav for a new car and compare it to the price of a new Tom-Tom, Garmin etc. They may be better, many are actually not, but in my eyes are just not worth it when mobile ones do so much for so little.
BTW, I had a special holder made that keeps mine at the level of climate controls.

SiRf InstantFix II  - calculates the patterns and positions of available GPS satellites up to three days in advance. This ensures faster vehicle positioning when route calculation starts. Newer mobile sat-navs have this feature.

it has been mentioned before, but it would be worthwile if anyone could quote the speakers' thickness as there is not much space in the doors. Are the ones in the rear doors (estate) also quite limited?

Mark, despite everything you say about MP3 being completely right, if we put in equation that:
1. A car is not an ideal accoustic environment with all background noise etc
2. Most of us do not listen to a very musically demanding peaces in car
3. Prevailant loudness war and evident reduction of dinamic range in mastering of modern music
my conclusion is that MP3, when created using a higher bit rate setting (192kbit/s or more), offers good enough compromise in car environment even for those of us who consider ourselves demanding music lovers.
I for one am happy to use MP3 in the car and with the music that I listen in it, yet at home where I have a good Hi-Fi system, I admit MP3 would just not be satisfactory enough.

Can any of these work with MID:

Sony CDX-GT420U
Pioneer DEH-2100UB
Kenwood KDC-W4044UA
Blaupunkt Victoria SD48

What about Clarion?

I can answer my own question from previous post. Posted it by mistake

Sony, Kenwood, Alpine, Pioneer

I assume the ones that have provision for an external display

Depends on the adapters.

Can you elaborate?

I am sure this has been covered before, but am failing to find. So, as in the title, which makes of headunits can be easily (read: cheaply) made to display on the MID?
