as an update which may hopefully help others.

Finally got around to getting the car into my local garage.  Turned out the engine coolant sensor was buggered and was reporting to the ECU the temp was 160 degrees!  this meant the ecu backing off the fuel mix causing the bad running and noises.
New sensor fitted (with much paid as the old one snapped off in the cylinder head) and new plugs and seems well again.

thanks guys,  will investigate further tomorrow.

When it is in drive and at idle, it now sounds pretty much like a knocking baning at bottom of engine  :-[

3
idle revs are around 800rpm

And yes.   small breather tube and hose was first port of call to clean out.  It was acutaly fairly clear, the larger (front) pipe on the head is a little cocked, but all cleaned now with carb cleaner.

one other tinhg which may help you guys help me.

When in P or N, it is not too bad, when when in drive and stopped, or driving, it is worse  - maybe this is just because the engine is under more load?

5
yeah, bosch one, and with MAF unplugged, symptoms same, and engine warning light comes on.   Does not come on otherwise.

thanks for the suggestions so far.

One quikc quesion (looking into flea for leads/plugs).   Given my car is a W 2000, - mini-facelift I thnk.....what enging type is it (20XEV??)

OK, my wife's W reg 2.0 GLS auto is getting really annoyig now!!  getting to the stage that I might invest in £5 of petrol and torch the damn thing!!!

Here are the problem('s).

1) (most serious)  Car is hisitant and idles badly when in drive.  Easiest way to descibe it is that it feels like it is about to back fire and if I listen to it underneath sounds like a little "pop" in the exhaust.  When stopping at lights in drive, car "judders" and vibrates.

2) when at low speed and sterring on full lock (eg when reversing of the drive and turning, there is a screech - ala fan belt, but fan belt, main belts seems correctly tight.

3) exhuast sound "blowy" even though just had new system fitted.

THINGS DONE SO FAR:

cam gasket replaced a couple of months ago when oil was getting into spark plug wells.

New cat - old one destroyed and blocked so meant car broke down one day and had to be recovered.

Breather pips/tubes and ICV cleaned

new cam sensor.

new maf sensor.

THERE ARE NO FAULT CODES.

Anybody got any suggestions (other than the aforementioned £5 of petrol!) :-/

Well, against the rules or against the spirit of the rules it maybe, but I for one, am very grateful to Klickster.

Contacted him by pm, paid via paypal, pads arrived at my house the next day.  good service and perfect pads.  He even took the time to pm me afterwards to make sure they had arrived and to make sure I did not have any problems with them  :y

You make your own choices in life, and I am glad I chose to contact him having come here for help on several occasions, and had nothing but good responses/advice/assistance.

gone out to give the breathers a good clean, and noticed that the air filter pipe was unnatached!!!!

Cleaned everythign I could up, gave the maf sensor a suirt of carb cleaners, noticed there was oil on the butterfly of the throttle valve.!

Also topped up the coolant which now definately looks like it needs to be flushed and new coolant!

Lets see how things go now.

thanks, will investigate later.  I know a few weeks ago I did clean up the throttle body with carb cleaner, and the pipes from the breathers were gunged up, which I cleaned, so will do all that again.

Ok, here goes with my current tale of woe on the missus' Omega.  had problems with it last year when I replaced cam sensor and cleaned the icv and also replaced MAF sensor.

Recently it was running very poorly and there was lots of oil in the plug wells.  Had local garage look at  it and they replaced the rocker cover gasket and new plugs and leads.

Then on Tuesday wife was on motorway when a load of smoke came out the exhaust and engine lost nearly all power.  Anyway, that turned out to be the catalytic convertor dying and bits from the cat blocking up the exhuast.

Just paid out best part of £350 for a new cat/fitting etc.  Garage said that the collant temp sensor is giving false readings so will need replacing (probably do that myself).

However, have noticed that the idle is not great.  I sort of "throbs".  PLEASE tell me this may be related to the dodgy sensor (although I suspect it is not).....or if not, what other avenues can I investigate??

Getting seriously miffed with the car now as spent near enough £700 in the last two weeks on it and it is still nowhere near perfect.

Omega General Help / Re: intermitent misfire at idle

Ok will look into that.

Any other suggestions as to possible cause.....and why is it very intermittent???....some drives not a single miss-fire, then others...miss-fire on every stop...then it is slow to pull away.  Definately as if not firing on all cylinders...then suddenly....away it goes?

ok....so took about 20 mils of oil out of each plug well using one of those kids   medicine pipets. Also cleaned up the plug caps.

My guess is that so much oil in each plug well is a fairly severe amount!!!  also drained oil down to normal level.

Just about to take it for a test run so see if the misfire continues

Ok, things are looking worse!!!

There is oil in each one of the spark plug wells!!!!

And, just to make it worse....checked the oil levels and it is too high!! (missus said she had put a dorp of oil in it about a week ago....grrrr.....) >:(

So.... could it be HG gone or just as a result of over filling?...and draining from teh sump down to proper level and cleaning up will sort??
