Fantastic answers. Thanks.
I printed them off and showed them to the mechanic. The look on his face was priceless. Called you all a shower of w"£$%^s. What would you all know? etc. Quoted the price of public liability,  wages, training etc. He drives a 2007 Merc S class. Should have known by that. Thanks again. I'll look for a new quote. ;D

Local mechanic wants £800 to replace the valve stem seals on my 2.6. Any opinions on whether this is a fair deal greatly appreciated. Thanks. :-/

Omega General Help / "how to" on AR35 auto solenoid change
« on: 11 April 2009, 13:25:38 »
Hi. Anyone know of a "how to" on changing the 2/3 gear solenoid in an AR35? Is it accessible through the sump pan opening when it's removed? I had one replaced about a year ago to fix a shifting problem that has since returned. Have a good mechanic available willing to give it a go! Don't want to do expensive work on it as I plan to do only about 3k miles in the next year. Cheers!

Having the same problem with mine. Had the shift solenoid (not sure which one) replaced a number of months ago and it fixed the problem. It's come back though. :(

Omega General Help / Re: Location of TCU on a 2.6?
« on: 20 March 2009, 21:35:47 »
Cheers Guys. What I'm up to is to swap one out from a mate's good car that hasn't got a shift problem. Just doing some elimination. Probably just a new solenoid needed. Had it replaced before when I had the same problem about 8 months ago. Did the job then but the failure to shift into 3rd(?) has come back.

Omega General Help / Re: Auto drops into low gear at speed

Cheers Kevin and chrisgixer. I'm in Dublin, Ireland. My mechanic says he can get codes off the car next Monday. I presume he has a TechII like code reader. Also, my car has had an illustrious career! It was the escort car for our Prime Minister. Used to see it outside his constituency  office. I presume it was driven pretty hard when going, but otherwise spent most of it's life at idle keeping a couple of coppers warm. It was really cheap, but now I know why!! Also, it gives a puff of pale smoke on startup, but I can live with that.

Thanks. Fortunately I've got a good cheap mechanic who can do this. I've passed on the instructions from elsewhere on this forum. Thanks for the "Don't panic" advice. I'll come back with the results. :)

Omega General Help / Auto drops into low gear at speed
« on: 06 February 2009, 00:42:04 »
Hi All. I'm new and this forum is a real find. I'd really appreciate any help with a problem on my 2.6 autobox.
When I get to 3rd gear/approx 40mph, the box shifts to a very low gear with high revs. It then clunks hard into the correct gear for a short time and then it happens again.
When I stop and restart the engine, the autobox dash warning light clears and the process repeats itself. When the issue first appeared 4 months ago I had 2 solenoids replaced but the problem has reappeared after 3 months of good driving. My local mechanic says he's suspicious that the Auto specialist didn't just clean the gearbox selector switch and top up the transmission fluid. Hence the reappearance of the problem so soon.
Any thoughts gratefully received! Thanks, J.
