Local mechanic wants £800 to replace the valve stem seals on my 2.6. Any opinions on whether this is a fair deal greatly appreciated. Thanks. :-/

I think Markey Mark has a nice 2.6 CDX coming up for sale soon with engine sorted and full MOT...probably not much difference in price...wouldnt bother repairing yours at £800 myself

Blimey. Cheaper to pension your Omegas off to somewhere like my Omega sanctuary to see their days out with other similar Omegas and use the money you have "saved" to buy another car. :)

And the rest...I paid £500 for our (2000) V plate dog transporter, and I've only done £243 to get it to the stage where nothing is wrong with it.

Fantastic answers. Thanks.
I printed them off and showed them to the mechanic. The look on his face was priceless. Called you all a shower of w"£$%^s. What would you all know? etc. Quoted the price of public liability,  wages, training etc. He drives a 2007 Merc S class. Should have known by that. Thanks again. I'll look for a new quote. ;D

There are various routes

1) How bad is it? If it's just a small puff at startup - live with it, and keep the £800 in the bank!

2) If you're handy with a spanner, you can DIY. If you do it on a real budget, you can do the job for about £150 (or £250 if you do things like cambelt on the way)

I'm prepared to bet he wouldn't fit new cambelt kit, water pump etc in his price either.

If he's being that disrespectful, I'd tell him to stick the job where the sun doesn't shine....

Definitely. Not sure how much an engine transplant yould cost ya, but 800 smackers is just too much.

I can sympathise if you want to keep the car, nomatter the cost, etc.. But there are clearly better people out there.
