Omega General Help / Re: Fitting new wishbones
« on: 24 May 2010, 18:45:19 »
Thank you for all the comments. I was very tired when I posted my original message having fought the problem for so long!  I have come to the conclusion, (because no one else seems to have been there) that the problem I have encountered is as a consequence of the parts (factored cos I'm strapped for cash at the mo!) having  a slightly high flange on the lower edge. This then fouls the pocket in the chassis that the rear bush goes into. The error only needs to be very small as it is amplified by the length of the wishbone.

I will do battle with the other one next weekend and see how I get on!

Cheers

Geoff

Thank you for all the replies and pointing me at the 'how to' listing (which describes exactly what I expected to encounter). Unfortunately, no one seems to have addressed the specific problem I encountered:  I got the new wishbone in position on the chassis side and the bolts back in without too much trouble but there was then insufficient downward movement to get the ball joint pin clear of the knuckle. Did I miss a trick? Or is there an issue with the parts I am using?  :-/

Er.... So have I just done the easy one or the difficult one?

(I've just done the offside) :)

Omega General Help / Fitting new wishbones

I have just spent three hours fighting to fit a new wishbone to my Omega. Getting the old one off was no problem but having got the new one bolted in at the chassis end, I found that there was not enough downward movement available at the outer end to get the pin into the pinch bolt.

Is there a clever trick involving compressing the spring a bit? Or is the lower edge flange on the new wishbone a bit too tall? (and thus restricting downward movement).

Would love some well informed advice before I do battle with the other one!

Thanks...  Geoff   :-/

Omega General Help / Re: Steering wheel wobble
« on: 24 May 2010, 18:38:13 »
Check the disks as they are the most obvious culprit. But.... Check the wheel bearings too.  I was told my problem was disks by lots of people but the problem went away when I replaced the bearing hub and NOT the disks: Slight play in the bearing allows the wheel to wobble. This shows up as vibration on the steering wheel until the brake pads line it up again.

Loose wheel bearings are a possibility. Especially if the problem goes away once the brakes have had a chance to true up the wheel. I hope to have rectified a similar problem: Having checked the disks (twice) and only found a tiny amount of run-out I could not bring myself to replace them before dealing with a known bearing problem. I changed the bearing this morning and have not driven it yet so we shall see!

Thank you once again for all contributions. There seems a clear body of opinion that it is the disks that are the culprit. Nevertheless, I am also grateful for suggestions about other possible causes as I can eliminate these by inspection before committing to replacing the disks. :)

Thank you for the replies. I am grateful for all the info offered and am not ruling anything out at the moment as I once spent a lot of time and money chasing down a problem on my previous Omega and I don't want to start replacing parts needlessly this time.

I will have a look at the wishbone bushes and see what state they are in. Not sure where to find the 'steering idler bush'?

Does anyone think that the slight play in the offside bearing or the worn tyres might be an issue?

Thank you for your reply. I don't know what make the disks are (though they did come from a factor) but I have measured the run-out with a dial gauge and the offside shows nothing measurable whilst the nearside shows 0.08mm. This doesn't seem a lot but would it be enough to generate noticable steering oscilation?

I have a 2.2l petrol Omega estate on a 52 plate. A problem has developed over the last few weeks where I get steering wheel vibration/oscilation under moderate braking (It goes away if I brake harder). The tyres are fairly well worn; near to the wear limits. I have checked the disk run-out and it is 0.08mm on the nearside and almost zero on the offside (The disks were replaced about 8k miles ago). There is no discernable bearing wear on the nearside and a very small amount of play on the offside. Is one of these factors the likely cause? Is it a combination of all three? Or is there another factor that I have not considered? Hope someone can help. :-/

Omega General Help / 2.2 Cam position sensor fitting?
« on: 30 March 2008, 21:58:54 »
As a consequence of my last posting, I went out and bought a replacement camshaft position sensor for my 2.2L petrol Omega (nasty pain in the wallat!) and then looked at the Haynes manual for how to fit it. The book says it has such a sensor but that is it! (no real surprises there damnit!)

Can someone give me a few clues as to how to fit the new sensor and whether there are any pitfalls to avoid?

Many Thanks

Thank you for your replies everyone. It's great when everyone tells you the same thing! I will get the codes read at lunchtime and probably buy a new cam sensor.

Cheers    :y

Omega General Help / 2.2 Misfire on hot re-start
« on: 05 March 2008, 20:44:11 »
My 2.2l facelife runs fine when started from cold but if the engine is switched off for a while and then re-started it misfires slightly, lacks power and will not rev over about 4.5k.

If the engine is then allowed to reach full operating temperature and then switched off and restared only a few seconds later, the problem disappears.

Replacing spark plugs/air filter and cleaning the throttle body have not had any effect. Any clues as to the cause would be gratefully received?

Thanks

Geoff-H
