Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: Bulb not illuminating
« on: 31 July 2008, 15:24:46 »
A-HA!

There is a leak on the condenser manifold (which my local garages and even air-con specialists don't want to touch)

Thanks for the advice.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Bulb not illuminating

Hi all

Got  a problem with the Air Con switch on my 98 TD

The symbol illumoinates when the side lights are on but the on/off light does not come on at all

Bought another switch and same problem - to rule out the chance of having bought a rubbish switch from flea-bay I opened the switch up and reversed the bulbs inside - it illuminated when the side lights came on - so it's not the bulbs.

Is it the connection behind the switch? Or the wiring behind the wiring control panel?

Many thanks

Omega General Help / Re: Sump plug
« on: 26 July 2008, 23:41:15 »
Well..

Vx told me that the sump plug was 12mm...THEY LIED (it was 14mm)

They also sold me the WRONG TYPE OF OIL FILTER despite taking the reg and looking it up...

Resulted in me spending the morning driving around Banbury and viullages looking for a 14mm sump plug - found one in Halfrauds but no-one in the shop could say what size it was, only the models it would fit...borrowed some callipers from the bike dept and measured the selection until I found a 14mm one...

THe old man (wizard mechanic) managed to tap a 14mm thread into the sump and fitted the new plug in about 1- minutes - over the years he's saved me thousands of £££s!

Thanks all for your advice

Vx want £120 to repair it, if they need to cut a new thread in the sump. Hour and a half labour, apparently. New sump pan plus gasket is about £240 (from dealer; could find cheaper by shopping around and waiting)

Found out the sump plug is 14mm - the old man (who is a mechanic) suggests tapping a bigger hole into the sump and fitting a 16mm plug.

Going to let him try that one!

Omega General Help / Sump plug
« on: 24 July 2008, 17:58:43 »
Hi all,

My sump is leaking - the plug is likely to be cross-threaded so a local garage tells me, although it might be on the sump itsself.

Can anyone tell me the diameter of the plug (so I can either replace it or get a slightly bigger one)

Many thanks

Same happened to me - could hear the fan sucking water!

Re: smell - there is a panel under the glovebox that has some foam insulating on it that soaks up loads of water, it stays wet for ages. Might be worth taking it off and leaving it out to dry

Thanks  everyone - lots of advice - although the best by far is to move to a hot dry country!

Help!

Rust is eating my car!

Didn't realise how quickly it was progressing until I looked at some photos of the old girl when I bought her and there was none at all :(

It's all around the offside rear door frame, at the bottom corner, and a worrying streak along the bottom of the driver's door.

What's the best way of stopping it?

Rust killed my Astra many years ago...never had a problem with other marques, only Vauxhalls...

Omega General Help / Re: how to check fluid level on auto box
« on: 16 April 2008, 16:14:26 »
There's a nut on the gearbox sump (?) underneath the car; if you undo it and fluid leaks out it's got the right amount in it - should fill the sump (with the car level) up to the hole for the plug.

Omega General Help / Re: Vac pipe renewal??
« on: 15 April 2008, 11:49:59 »
The rubber pipes? They seem to degrade really badly, have done on mine anyway.

I've used the same rubber hose as you get on the diesel spill pipes - as long as it's about the same diameter it's OK to use

It's about £1 per foot or so - connectors are 6p onwards

Omega General Help / Central locking
« on: 14 April 2008, 08:38:07 »
Hi there,

There is something wrong with the central locking on my '98 2.5 TD GLS and I can't figure out which part is going wrong!

The problem is with the driver's door - sometimes it locks and unlocks  fine with the remote, sometimes the knob refuses to budge. Sometimes the key works fine, other times it really takes a lot of force to lock / unlock (and there's a loud mechanical "ka-chunk" when it finally goes)

Taken the door apart and can hear motor whining when I use the remote lock, but nothing happens.

Do I need to replace the lock barrel, the solenoid, the entire motor?

Any ideas? Fed up having a luxury car and having to use a naff key to lock and unlock!

Newbie Welcome Area / Goodbye...not hello...

Dear all

I have finally given up the delights of 6-cylinder RWD...

Sold the old warhorse (2.5 TD 1998) for a Peugeot 607 (sorry all!)

I relly miss the tail flicking out on wet corners and kicking down gears at 95mph but...she was just too frail in the end...and thirsty!

Anyway, just wanted to say that this was the friendliest and most entertaining owner's forum on the web. Goodbye and goodluck to all...and if Vx ever make another decent 6-cyl RWD exec salood I'll be right back with you all

This forum is much more active than the Vauxhall Owner's Network!

Thanks all for the welcome.
