Help!

Rust is eating my car!

Didn't realise how quickly it was progressing until I looked at some photos of the old girl when I bought her and there was none at all

It's all around the offside rear door frame, at the bottom corner, and a worrying streak along the bottom of the driver's door.

What's the best way of stopping it?

Rust killed my Astra many years ago...never had a problem with other marques, only Vauxhalls...

Probably the cheapest way is rust free second hand doors in the same colour as yours. Rust is difficult to stop once its started

I bit the bullet last the week before last & had all 4 doors repainted at a local body shop £750. He blended into the front and back wings both sides and did various chips & dinks. I replaced a rear door moulding that was fubar'd when I bought the car 5 yrs ago & the opposite front moulding was rusty at the back. They're bloody expensive for what they are.
I'll get the bonnet done at some stage.
Might aswell spend money on this car rather than replace it.  :-/

2nd hand doors with no rust, it can be cured, but its expensive!!

I'll be getting the rear arches lead filled & sorted when I replace the rear light fixtures.  Not bothering with replacing the rear 1/4's whole, as they will only go again...

Also get the doors sorted, and any other bits of rust done...  Quite lucky though myself, the only bubling is on the drivers door, and then its only 1 bit under the window seal!

If you are going to the expense of having it painted I'd suggest having as many new or rustfree secondhand panels fitted that you can afford, some bodyshops will just grind out the surface rust maybe slapping a little filler over the offending rust patch and leave the root still in your metal, this will last for a while, but rust is like a cancer and unless you remove every single spot it will just return and you are back to square one!

tbh there is a rubber sealant/paint thing you can get (kinda like waxoyl but not as messy) which you can put on the bottom inners of doors or arches which acts as a damned good seal to prevent any rust after repairs...  I can't remember the name of it exactly, but I'll ask my uncle what it is he uses

It's still oozing out of the bottom of all 4 of mine when the weather's warm! I don't think it's doing the rubber seals much good though, as there's a door-drain shaped 'bubble' on the rubbers where the waxoil sits on them. It does go back to its original shape - at the moment.

you could always move here to spain not a spot of rust on 40 year old cars that are long in the scrappers over in the uk.
my miggy thankfully is totally rust free, the only down side is that it keeps getting covered in dust.

Thanks  everyone - lots of advice - although the best by far is to move to a hot dry country!
