Omega General Help / Re: central locking

Yes, solenoid will need replacing as it did on mine. Try to source a second hand one unless you want to pay big bucks at the stealer. I got one for a tenner.

Had the same problem a while back. From outside the car with the window open get as firm a grip as you can on the door button and pull steadily upwards continuously. With any luck it will release. You may have to try a few times. Worked for me on my mini facelift version.

Omega General Help / Re: Yet another water leak.....

Thanks Andy. All of the first four are already removed. Recently replaced the DIS pack, and still have the scars to prove it, but getting the actual bracket off may be a different matter. Anyone done that core plug? Best do the pressure test I guess before jumping to any conclusions though.

Poor bugger understands completely! Just getting bits together to make pressure test cap. If it is the core plug, and that's about the area where the water seems to be coming from, is it replaceable with the engine in situ? The way my luck is going probably not.

As I said, no real sign of a leak around any of those areas Mark but I hope you're right about the head gasket. I'll let you know when I've done a pressure test. Incidentally, where exactly is the core plug that might be the culprit?

Omega General Help / Yet another water leak.....
« on: 19 March 2010, 09:52:28 »
....only this one could be terminal.

I've had a very small amount of water loss for at least a year and a faint smell of hot coolant. About six months ago I replaced the HBV (with new GM one), really as a precaution because there was no evidence that the leak was from that area. Car has not been used for a few weeks and on starting up recently I noticed that there is now a more pronounced leak with a steady drip running down the passenger side rear of the engine. It's falling on the exhaust at some point as steam is being produced. I have stripped the top of the engine down to expose the valley between the 'V' but there is no real evidence of a major leak other than possibly a very small bit of weeping from the coolant bridge. It's not wet or even damp in that area. Can feel no wetness around any of the pipes. The leak appears to be lower down on the rear of the engine but I just cannot see exactly where it's coming from. I am virtually convinced that I have the dreaded leaking head gasket that one or two others have reported previously. If it is that, it will probably mean the end for the car unfortunately as advancing years and associated aches and pains mean I wouldn't be able to tackle that job. As a last check I'd like to do a pressure test. I have a spare expansion tank cap, could somebody explain how I convert that to enable me to 'pump' up the system and what pressure should I go to? Can this be done with a bicycle pump or can I use my electric tyre pump?

Any advice and comments welcome.

Thanks

If it is possible is it just the four bolts, 2 on the inside next to coolant bridge and two on outside or is it more difficult

Unless the 3 litre is different to the 2.5, the breather box is at the driver side, rear of the block not near the coolant bridge  :-/

Omega General Help / Re: deadlocked door

Something to try before you resort to destroying the door card. When I had this I eventually released the lock by pulling up very firmly and continuously on the door button (leaning in through the window from the outside). Keep the pressure up for as long as you can. It's a bit like turning the key with some force on the drivers side when the central locking has failed. It may take several attempts and may not work at all but worth a go.

Omega General Help / Re: Good/Bad spark plugs?

I'm afraid I have to disagree with your disagreement! Fitted GM plugs recently, immediate improvement on the ones put in by the last rubbish garage that did a service for me.

I have exactly the same problem although not losing quite as much as you. Have also done HBV recently. Yes, oil cooler is between V underneath plenum and inlet manifold. My next step will be to check all of that area when the weather improves.

oops...too late!

Omega General Help / Re: Cleaning Breathers on V6
« on: 29 January 2010, 08:05:38 »
Sorry, if you haven't done it before and cleaning is overdue, it will take a minimum of two hours in my view. You have to spend some time on this to do it properly. The throttle butterfly valves alone will be well caked and will take a fair bit of time to clean correctly.

Omega General Help / Re: Passenger door shut cannot open.

Sounds like it's deadlocked. Had this with my front passenger door. Try lowering the window and from the outside, get as firm a grip as you can on the button and pull upwards slowly and firmly. keep pulling for as long as you can and it might just release. You may have to try several times before it releases. You will need to replace the lock solenoid once you get it open or it will happen again.

Omega General Help / Re: auxillery belt
« on: 24 January 2010, 09:47:54 »
Don't spray the belt, in fact, don't spray anything! It's either the belt slipping or, more likely, the tensioner pulley has passed it's sell by date. Turn the nut in the centre of the tensioner pulley (Top left) clockwise to release tension on the belt, slip the belt off and examine the pulley to see if it spins freely with no horrible noises. Replace  if necessary (around £30) and put a new belt on, especially now you've sprayed it! You'll have to undo a couple of brackets to be able to fully put the new belt on. Make a note of the route of the belt before you take it off.

Omega General Help / Re: Pulley bearings - common fault?
« on: 19 January 2010, 20:12:53 »
I won't say told you so ......oh damn, I just have! Did try to stop you driving it as exactly the same happened to me including the recovery bit. As already said, you just need the pulley and integral bearing. Once replaced, you turn the centre nut to release the tension and enable the belt to be slipped on.
