Cleaning Breathers on V6
« on: 28 January 2010, 21:40:33 »

How long would you say it takes to clean the breathers properly on a 3.0 V6???........also can in be done with plenum/injector rail in place or does it need removing.

Im trying to budget the time as to when I can do it.  :y

About an hour and yes, anyone can do it.

Sorry, if you haven't done it before and cleaning is overdue, it will take a minimum of two hours in my view. You have to spend some time on this to do it properly. The throttle butterfly valves alone will be well caked and will take a fair bit of time to clean correctly.

Agree with Geoff.

To do it properly takes at least a couple of hours. No point in doing it half heartedly :y

In the time it took me to clean my breathers, Darth Loo Knee practically changed the headgaskets. Mind you, you could drink champagne through them now.

Better still, a nice pint of foaming ale.

But seriously, a big can of carb cleaner, a length of wire and a tap should see you right. Just a pity the plenum has to be lifted to remove them, or I'd do it every other week ;)

First time .. allow a good couple to three hours as you will, I expect, be exceedingly careful, and if like me , scared of breaking something.......  read 4 times, check spanners 3 times, move nut/screw/bolt very carefully...  :)

You will clean all the old crud off very gently, also ensuring you damage nothing .....   :)

Once you've done them you'll wonder what you made a fuss about, and you will happily do them in about an hour-ish, as there is no hard crud and you now know what you are doing.

Proving the saying  "practice makes perfect" to a large degree   :)

"Do it properly" and "Half heartedly" indeed! What sort of insult was that meant to be?
Some interesting comments made but it would be nicer if they had stuck to the 'how is it done part' instead of commenting on the advice of others which should left in the General Discussion area. At least I had pointed to the Maintenance Guide as an assitance.
My comment was supposed to help, not invite put down comments from those who took longer for whatever reason. As with every other job it depends on the skill of the person, the seriousness of the problem and the availability of the correct replacement parts should any be needed. Cleaning time cannot be estimated either.
Couple of hours yes - if you have not got everthing to hand ready as I had because I had pre-planned the job!
It took me just under an hour to do the job 'properly', including the throttle because I timed it from my start time after I had collected everything I needed and had it all to hand. It was also not in such a badly maintained state that it required any longer.
Now retired, I have been in the motor fitter game for over 30 years, nearer to 40 and so I have many years of skills and practice to count on. I dare say there are some even quicker than I was too.
Just follow the guide I pointed you to M8 and if it takes you hours or days at least you will know you have done it yourself and have the satisfaction of knowing that! Its a very good guide so you should have no worries if you follow it and don't try to shortcut it.
I was not to proud to take advice from Darth LooKnee either.

Bionic, I think you read something into the comments... No one slated your time, just reported their experiences with some poorly maintained systems :y :y Chill out ;) ;)

Anyway... To the OP, follow Bionic's advice, follow the guide and I would say you should allow twice as long as you think it will take, then there wont be any reason to rush :y :y

i refuse to put time limits on any diy job, it takes as long as it takes imo, only once you've done a particular job do you know how long it takes YOU to do. How long it takes anyone else to do is of no importance unless your paying them of course.

Allow a morning take your time and read the guide first to familiarise yourself, all being well it wont take a morning but if something goes wrong(like dropping a hose clip in the v or down the inlet for example, remove them and block the inlet with rags etc) then its no big deal to sort out if your not up against the clock.

It wasn't meant to be an insult at all.

As LD said I was just saying how long it took me to do the job for the first time (obviously the more you do it the quicker you get).

I followed the guide too and would recommend that anyone else does the same. And I have taken advice from Darth Loo-Knee on more occassions than I care to remember. ::)

That has to rank among the top ten bits of advice on here. If I tell swmbo it will only take 1/2 hour she knows she has the day to herself, and best to make herself scarce.

I can remove the plenum and injector rail in my sleep. Ive had it on and off so many times now so thats not a problem.

Ive just never removed the breather housing as would prefer to remove it and clean it properly. Looking at it closely I dont think it can be done without removing the plenum and possibly the skuttle as well  :-?
