Omega General Help / Re: Engine change complete!
« on: 24 November 2009, 20:47:02 »
A-ha! I saw the broken hose on the bottom of the inlet manifold, and also the broken hose coming from the servo system!

I also distinctly remember breaking it off when I lifted the engine out. It was the thing I forgot.

I will have to replace it with a new / 2nd hand part (as opposed to a bodge) as I don't want the brakes to fail on me.

Without the servo assist on the brakes it takes a LOT of force to stop an omega estate.

Thank you guys. This forum continues to be a great help to me.

All your earths OK?

Main multiplugs all home?

Points to an earthing issue to me.

Spot on. I put a jump lead from the lifting eye to the batt neg and she fired up.
No smoke, rattles, knocks or fault codes at all!
Got me a dirty great red battery lead and bolted it from the block to the -ve terminal.

But no brakes either... The braking assist servo is not coming on with the engine start up.
I see the power steering pump provides the pressure for this to be actuated by the servo (triggered by the brake pedal), and the pipes have not been disturbed (I bent the PSP out of the way on the engine change)

Does anyone have any details on the vacuum hose circuit? This is the only thing I can think of that has been disturbed on the brake system (One hose is loose and there is a thick one broken and taped up...)
Strange how this would cause the servo not to work though.

Any ideas?

No loose wires anywhere. All plugs back in properly.

The three big plugs by the battery took some abuse before I realised you turn the holder to release them.

I ran out of time today but might book tomorrow afternoon off work to sort it

Omega General Help / Engine change complete!
« on: 22 November 2009, 21:11:45 »
Hello all , My 2.0l 16v omega had piston slap like a good 'un and belched blue smoke out most mornings, with enough blow-by to please even the expats I decided to buy a short block off ebay, recon the rings / bearings etc and transplant it into my engine. I finished getting it back in today, got all the wiring done again, then oil, water, battery, turn key and... nothing. I plugged the selector switch sensor back in (Doh!), turn key and nothing again. I heard the fuel and ignition relays buzzing away to themselves, christmas tree lights on the dash and the EML on strong.
I tried starting it a few more times and must have insulted the EML - it started flashing at me.
Rev counter was going crazy too. The cam sensor wiring was cut during the removal, and I re-wired it together.
Rev counter would lift to idle, then fall. Sometimes it would sit at 4500rpm until the key went off.

I'm going to try the paperclip test tomorrow to see what codes I get.

Could the cam sensor wiring job I did cause the starter circuit to be disabled? Or is there a special way to "re-set" the ECU after a major job like this?
On a few starts I heard the starter motor "flick" for a second. but not every time.

Confused!

Omega General Help / Re: Strange noise when cornering
« on: 06 September 2009, 01:20:27 »
Mine does a similar thing. Only when It is turning left and decelerating / braking. Connected to the wheel rotation speed and sounding like metal to rough metal grinding noise.
It scares peds quite nicely...

see I have had a 'mare with this omega really. I am still fighting forwards with it though as I can't really afford to do much else, and I do actually like the car. Head gasket was renewed in January so should be OK. No oil in coolant / vice versa. Strange problem though: exhaust coming from the oil filler cap, rare intermittent rattle (sounds like coils - got replacement today) rattle produces big blue smoke and I mean BIG BLUE smoke!!.
Possibly the constant partial misfire combined with the state of the rings after 100,000 miles of towing a caravan also enough blow-by with a gummed open EGR valve, allowing a constant stream of oily fumes into the engine. When it does misfire, the oily residue burns nice and blue. Add to this a really bad oil leak from sump, rocker cover and ~another one~ and you have a nightmare car, that also leaks water as and when it feels like it.
The bodywork is 100% perfect though, which is the driving factor for me to sort it out myself!  :(

I'll get there in the end.

I am tempted to do the dashboard removal for the matrix fix. Looks like it will be the blue pill, then.

I'm usually the last owner of my cars, but there's something about the omega that I really like!
If someone can advise on what sort of area to cut, I'll try and do a nice and tidy job (only I will ever know!!)

This sounds like a much better idea. I used a crowbar on the cavalier and did the whole job in about 20 minutes.
The bugger wouldn't start though and I ended up scrapping it and buying the Omega...

Hello!
My 2.0L estate blew a split in it's water pipe on a run about a month ago (The pipe coming off the thermostat, 3/4" bore), and promptly boiled over after it lost all the coolant. I had no tools and no choice but to buy water, and drive the 45 miles back home, topping up the water every 10 miles or so. Swindon Vauxhall quoted £98.00 ex-VAT for a replacement hose, so I went to Pirtek and bought some high temp high pressure hose with brass joiners and jubilee clips for £10, and did a "proper" bodge. No leaks! Or so I thought...

Until I switched the fan temp control to "heat, please" last week and I heard a distinctive noise that sounded like liquid squirting out under pressure, inside the car. I thought no more of it as I thought I had fixed the leak, and no more was leaking out. Next morning I checked the coolant (every day since the big leak). Really low!

I guess this can only point to either the HBV pipes leaking, or the heater matrix leaking after it got so hot (I had the fans + heat on to help the cooling).

I can eliminate the HBV as I have a puddle of coolant in the driver's footwell.

Now then, the Haynes book of lies says how to do it, but mentions you have to remove the whole facia i.e. entire dashboard to get at it.
I recently did a banger cavalier and know the matrix is well hidden on the cav too.

Has anyone done this job before and knows a simpler way than taking EVERYTHING out to replace a single part?

Omega General Help / Re: mpg what do you get/expect

My 2.0L 16v estate will run for an average of eighteen miles before she goes back to the bar and orders another gallon.
I know this is not quite right but I also do carry a fair bit of weight around in her.

Classic head gasket symptoms?

Hi Guys/Gals. In case anyone is interested, I finally sorted my rattly omega out.
Top end strip recondition and rebuild. It turned out that the cambelt was one tooth out on the camshaft sprockets (from the last owner doing the head gasket), and it was running "late" all the time, hence the backing up etc.
ALL the stem seals were shot along with six hyd. lifters being siezed solid. Water pump was on it's last legs too. All replaced, back together with new hd bolts, gasket, belts etc etc etc. New oil/filters and a few long runs to fill the new lifters up with oil... And it seems I have missed one lifter. It either knocks on the one lifter (too low), or horribly sticks too high, and I get one of the valves headbutting a piston. With the rocker cover off they all look identical. Ah well, I'll sort it out. Forgot to take pictures though.

I cleaned the whole car up today with the intention of selling it, but discovered that it really is a nice car when it is immaculately clean, and also discovered that the front seats tilt back!! I never knew that. It's now like driving a shiny barge down the road whilst sitting in an armchair.

Omega General Help / Re: Exhaust coming from oil filler cap!! - help!
« on: 10 November 2008, 13:35:49 »
The problem really is a previous lack of maintenance. A top end rebuild WILL sort the problem. I'll do ALL the breathers and the sump / pump at the same time. Lots of work but well worth it in the end as I'll have a motor that I can confidently trust!!

I'll take pictures along the way and post the news of my success / catastrophic failure. If it goes really wrong you might see it on youtube as well. :y

Yes, you are right. It has only done 98,000 miles with a good S/history, but the oil is blacker than black (obviously). Just a shame. It's the gamble you take when buying an old car. I can do all the work myself over a week or so to save on beer tokens.

Strange thing is, the exhaust is normal - clear all the time, except for twice when it belched blue smoke. Worn rings would mean a smoky exhaust all the time...?
