Interestingly, my orange light has now gone off. I am however getting one fault code for bank 1. When i get 2 fault codes ( bank 1 and 2 ) the orange light comes on. I assume this is so anyway.

Theory for mine is... the pre-cat on bank 1 is on its last legs and is flagging up a fault all the time. The pre-cat on bank 2 is just starting to give out and flagged a fault after an hour of heavy driving followed by being sat in traffic and subsequntly heating up. This also occured after filling up with poor quality fuel in the middle of no where at a local garage.

Il try filling with v-power or another top brand fuel and see if it re-occurs. Seems to me like the cats are struggling when theyve had a lot of work to do, followed by being heated up.

I went for ex-plod for the manual box mainly. Very entertaining drive, powerful engine, RWD, manual box....

I can't get on with autos. Stiffer ride in ex-plod too which i prefer. Interior on mine was mint. The back had never been sat in and it still has that new car smell!

Someone correct me if i'm wrong but isn't the removal of carbon only really a problem with tired old engines where the build up created a better seal. On a new/modern engine i can't see it affecting it.

Omega General Help / Odd little annoyance...
« on: 05 February 2009, 13:06:11 »
This isn't really anything major, more annoying than anything.

Lately the car has had... issues with it's warning beep for keys in ignition. When i got the car it was fine, key in ignition, door open. A constant beep. Take the key out and the beep disappeared.

However now, the constant beep is there, but when they key is removed the beep doesnt stop instantly as it should, it kind of winds down... beeooop......

Any ideas ?  ;D

EGR will have a slight effect on performance yes. If anything the pre-cylinder temperature can be slightly higher. On a forced induction car this is negated by intercoolers. In cylinder is lower due to the increase in mass and decrease in relative ratio of lean mixture / oxygen.

Under normal running, ie not wide open throttle and idle, the presence of egr will have very little impact. Advanced spark timing can overcome the slower burn, releasing more postive work done at and after TDC instead of the quick burn before TDC (negative energy work).

Hope that makes some sense! It's how i've been taught at uni haha.

EGR works on the principle of PV=mRT or T=PV/mR ...

Increase the mass in the cylinder and T drops accordingly. Lower cylinder temperature reduces NOx formation.

Since during warmup the car will run a pre-set fuel map, i'd suggest fuel pressure regulator possibly? If every cylinder is flooded id guess it's unlikely for it to be injectors.

Maybe a silly question but are you getting a decent reliable spark? And when you say it runs for 3 seconds, how does it sound during that time?

As has been said those graphs mean nothing. For a start they are osciloscope readings for thinks like spark duration and dwell time which is completely irrelevant in your case since he claims to have been messing with the fuel system. And besides what would they prove if he claims to have found no faults?

At the risk of sounding mis-trusting, are you sure the timing is accurate? If it was fine before and needed adjusting for being wrong thats where i would look.

The worst one i've had was a woman trying to get in the back door of my Land Rover. Instead of lifting up the handle like a normal person she tried lifting up the rear number plate light surround and snapped it off  to a sound of "oohh woops" >:(

Hmm my bad, didn't see the one on this very page!

Gonna test the CTS now anyhow and see what that brings up.

Omega General Help / EML and fault codes appeared..
« on: 30 January 2009, 16:57:05 »
I found a long thread on this but this seems a bit different so apologies if it seems like covering old ground...

Took the car for a good long drive today over the welsh mountain roads.. quite a hard drive in fact. It was all brilliant until it got back to the city when the EML came on. Fault code pedal trick brought up 3 codes..

0420 0430 and 0704.

I find it quite unlikely that two cats are going to have suddenly given up the ghost together like this... Reading some suggests that the coolant temp sensor can be to blame. When i parked the car the engine temp gauge went crazy, sending the needle to over 100... which it clearly wasn't as it had been running no hotter than 95 even when giving the engine a good workover.

The car is running fine.. idling fine.. revs freely and doesn't seem down on power.

If it was just the one bank i would assume it was either a single cat or single lambda sensor gone but two at once... seems the problem must be pre-inlet or somewhere else.

I hope my logic makes sense!  ;D

Cheers!  :)

Best looking on the net. Halfrauds are £25 for a set of front Ferodos. Trade card will take some sting off that though.

Ah right ok, sounds about right then. The aircon works fine so i can't see that being a problem. Just took a short journey through town in it. As soon as it got to about 85ish the fan kicked in full whack and went back of soon as the temp dropped.

As long as it doesnt go above 95 then il leave it be!

Cheers buddy
